Hanging out on the North Shore

March 9th, 2011 · No Comments

On Friday I did my gym/ABC Store/Honolulu routine again. After that Dallas and I went shopping. He was planning on wearing shorts and slippers for the wedding, so at the very least I wanted him to go buy some nice shorts and slippers. At Macy’s they had a bunch of really nice Quiksilver shorts. Dallas ended up getting a few pairs.. and a new pair of Scott Hawaii (his favorite brand) slippers with leather straps. Ohhh la la. Not to be left out of the shopping spree, I got a new pair of Quiksilver/Roxy slippers. And we randomly passed by this cell phone accessory store where we each got a new iPhone case. Mine was all cracked! And Dallas has always hated his big, bulky case.

Jen and Kristin were on a spa retreat so after shopping Dallas and I met up wtih Chad and Cousin and had lunch at the Curry House, another one of our favorite Honolulu restaurants. Check out a couple previous visits to Curry House: 2007, 2009.

After lunch we drove up to Oahu’s north shore to Waimea Valley. Dallas’s friend Hoku works at Waimea Valley. We strolled our way to the back and took a dip in the waterfall like we did last time we visited. So much fun!

Hmm.. let’s see a close up of that one….

Lulz. They look like drowned rats! Doing the Shaka!

On the stroll back out, away from the waterfall, I took all of these beautiful photos of Waimea Valley:

When Hoku was done with work we stopped at Foodland and then went back to his house for a barbecue. Jen and Kristin met us there too. We ate so much! Chicken, steak, sausage, ahi, maui chips, mac nuts and two kinds of poke – limu and shoyu. Yum!

Who Says Cowboys Can’t Cook?

January 19th, 2010 · 3 Comments

Two weekends ago Dallas had to travel to Fort Worth for work so he got a ticket to go see the Dallas Cowboys play the Eagles in their home field playoff game. They won. Dallas was ecstatic!

The following weekend, this past Sunday, the Cowboys played the Vikings. Dallas cooked a bunch of Japanese curry stew and invited a friends over to watch the game. Dallas was all decked out in his Cowboys gear as he was cooking in the morning. I wasn’t sure who I wanted to cheer for, but I kind of wanted Brett Favre to do well so I wore my Packers tshirt. Dallas didn’t really like it, but oh well. In the end, or actually, right from the beginning, the Cowboys did not do well and lost the game. But at least everyone liked the curry!

Later on we watched the second game and played some games. Killian brought over a Press Your Luck game for the Wii so we took turns playing that. We also busted out our new Super Mario Brothers game.

And ate more delicious curry.

Curry House

For lunch we went to one of our favorite quick spots, CoCo Ichibanya Curry House. They have several locations on Oahu. Last time we were in Hawaii we took Dallas’s grandma out for curry there. This time we hit up another location, but it was as good as last.

The Curry House menu is huge. You get to choose how much rice you want, how spicy you want your curry, what kind of meat (chicken, beef, pork, etc) and what toppings or sides you want.

I decided to have chicken katsu with cheese.

Dallas had pork katsu with kimchi.

I think Dallas was psyched because almost every store and restaurant in Hawaii stocks his favorite Japanese green tea.

Know what this is? It’s a celebration, bitches! Grab a drink, grab a glass

This is the 4th year in a row that we have gone to Jen and Chad’s house for New Years Eve (2007, 2006, 2005). As everyone is getting older and some are having kids, the parties have gotten more mellow.. not that I’m complaining, we always have fun. Just a laid back time talking with friends, playing Wii, drinking, eating, and losing money at poker. I got a bottle of Veuve champagne on my first day at Roundarch and have been saving it for… who knows, so I brought it along and we drank it at midnight. Paul and Chad made two different chilis for everyone and Dallas tried to top them with some Japanese curry. Quinn finally got to open his Christmas gift from us, which he was excited about. He still only rips really little pieces off because his fingers are so tiny. Since he only had one gift I let him take all the time he needed.

Happy New Year! I tried to text everyone but my phone was not working.

Japanese Curry

May 20th, 2008 · 6 Comments

In the wintertime when it’s cold I love to make a pot of chili and let it cook all day. Just as much as Dallas and I like to make chili, a comfort food from my childhood, we also love to make Japanese curry stew, a comfort food from his childhood. It’s just as much a perfect winter comfort food a chili is.

Basically, you just need to buy the curry, which is available in the “ethnic” section of any supermarket, and follow the instructions on the back. We get beef and cut it up, or just buy beef stew meat, carrots, potatoes and maybe some onions.

Adam Kuban wrote a great piece on Japanese curry for Serious Eats. Oh, and remember these photos of the Japanese curry we had in Honolulu?
