Gold Star = Packers Bar?

November 7th, 2004 · 1 Comment

Gold Star
Gold Star, Ukrainian Village, Chicago

After dinner with Jake at Mod last night, Margaret and Garth and I went to Gold Star. It’s a great little dive bar that Ryan had recommended to me in the past. What was the best was that they had a huge Packers Super Bowl XXXI flag hanging above the bar. Margaret said that her friend goes to Gold Star sometimes to watch the Packers games. Looks like I have a new Sunday afternoon spot to hit up, too bad there’s a bye this week.

btw, Mod is a place that I’d passed by 100 times before and couldn’t decide if it was trying really hard to be cool or if it really was cool. I’m still not completely sure. But the food was really good even if the service was really slow.

The awesome, awesome Adam was kind enough to open up his Park Slope garden on Monday and grill up some pizzas for us. They tasted great. The dough was nice and soft inside and crispy outside. Perfect. Each pizza had varying toppings like basil, Portobello, pepperoni, grated mozzarella, fresh mozzarella, garlic, hot peppers. Adam took requests and even made some without cheese for lactose-intolerant Jake. The last pizza we made for desert was butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar sprinkled on grilled peaches.

I’m pretty sure Adam needs to get out of the corporate world and open up a grilled pizza restaurant.

Sunday night I met a bunch of people out at Croxley’s Ale House in the East Village. It’s the same place I had my going away party when I left NYC.

Last night I sort of planned to go to the New York City Photobloggers event at the SoHo Apple Store, but sort of just wanted to go home and crawl into bed. I ended up stopping by on the way home and staying for the whole thing. It was fun to see the people behind the NYC photoblogs I read explain what they do and why they do it and what their techniques are. There were a ton of people there, so many that the Apple Store staff was getting annoyed. Some people I knew others I met for the first time. Jen baked cookies the night before and shared them with Tien and Dahlia and I (they were delicious!). Also, nice to meet Chris G. after the event. Thanks for introducing yourself, dude. And good to see WhatISee + girlfriend again.

After the presentation everyone headed over to Merc Bar. Jason Kottke was there and I knew it’d be my last chance at meeting the ever-elusive man behind the site, so I introduced myself. He said that he didn’t know if he should even be speaking to me. He’s still sore about the whole tator tot hotdish thing. It was good to see my nerdy friends one last time – Dahlia, Jen, Jake, Corie, Mike – you’ll have to let me know if you’re ever in Chicago! And, Jake, I’m going to hold you to that “If it doesn’t work out in Chicago you can stay with us” drunken offer you made!
