Buona Terra

Gnocchi Verde al Quattro Formaggi: Potato spinach dumplings in a four cheese sauce

Rotini di la Nona: Cork screw pasta with prosciutto, mushrooms, green peas and parmesan cream

Jess and I decided to go out for dinner on Friday night. I’d never been to Buona Terra, our neighborhood Italian spot, even though I’ve lived only a few blocks away for over a year. The space is small so I called ahead to make a reservation. When I arrived at 6:30, the restaurant was empty and I wondered if I’d even needed to call ahead. Within a half hour the place was packed.

For an appetizer we split the bruschetta. Tasty, but pretty much your standard bruschetta. Jess and I both decided to get pasta for our entrees. I got the gnocchi and Jess got the rotini. We skipped dessert and got coffee instead.

I liked everything we ordered at Buona Terra. The interior is cute and the service was good. I mean, it wasn’t like this place was the best meal I ate in my life, but I think it’s a solid bet. Kind of like Piazza Bella in our old Roscoe Village neighborhood, but, like Logan Square, Buona Terra was a bit less expensive.

Thanksgiving in Las Vegas

November 30th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Previous year’s family trips to Las Vegas have been relatively mild by Vegas standards, but this year 5 of our friends from the Boston area – Molly, Matt, Sarah, Adam and Ross – joined us for the trip and it felt like some kind of crazy bachelor party. We were out every single night until 3 or 4 in the morning and didn’t really sleep in at all. We had a great time, but I think by the last night we were all just done. Exhausted!

The first night Dallas and I arrived first around 9 p.m. We set our bags in our room, then turned around and went to the casino immediately. Molly, Matt, and Ross arrived a few hours later and joined us.

On the first day Molly, Matt, Dallas and Ross drove out to Mesquite and went golfing. I stayed in town, slept in late, and explored The Strip a bit. I’ve always stayed downtown when I’ve been in Las Vegas, so The Strip and its casinos and resorts was a bit foreign to me.

Ross had a ton of points from all the traveling he does for work that were about to expire so he set us up in some great rooms at the Planet Hollywood Resort. This was the view from our room. You can see the Bellagio fountain show, Caesar’s Palace, and the Paris resort.

One of the first things I saw while wandering around our casino: a sign advertising strip karaoke. Not sure how that works.

Connected to the resort was a huge shopping mall called the Miracle Mile Shops. I spent several hours walking around there.

After a while I stopped for lunch at La Salsa, a Mexican chain restaurant that I used to visit when I lived in Southern California. Of course, in Las Vegas, it was all done up garishly, but I still liked the food I ordered.

A lot of the ceilings in the shopping center are painted like blue skies, which is neat, but after a while I felt like I should see some real blue skies so I went outside. It was so gorgeous. Sunny and I had a tshirt on, no jacket, and was just fine. The resort to the south of ours was the Paris. They’ve got the fake Eiffel Tower out there and the Paris balloon, but what I was drawn to was a gorgeous fountain.

I decided to walk to Caesar’s Palace. It was only a little bit farther down the street and across the street. Inside were a bunch of really beautiful statues and fountains. I walked through the shopping area there a bit and then headed back to Planet Hollywood for a rest before everyone came back.

We decided to spend the night at the MGM Grand. At first we thought maybe we’d go to craftsteak, Tom Colicchio‘s steakhouse, for dinner. After looking at the menu though, we decided on something a little less spendy, since we’d be spending money on gambling later on. Ross had been to a great Italian place right down the hall called Fiamma so we went there. I had the best gnocchi of my life.. lobster, truffles, mushrooms. So delicious.

Adam and Sarah flew in that night and met up with us at the MGM casino. We were probably there til 2 or 3 in the morning, when there was a super bizarro Fat Burger run. We walked in and they started blaring Biggie Smalls so loud. Everyone in line started dancing and singing. Even the fry cook was raising the roof. Molly was dancing like crazy. For the whole time we were there they only played Biggie and Tupac. So awesome/strange. Also strange? This high chair full of ketchup.

Also at Fat Burger, some guy who said he was from the south side of Chicago gave me his CD. He said his friend was from WI and I said I was too. When he asked where I told him and he shouted out to 920, our area code up there.

The whole end of that night was super bizarro. There is video that exists somewhere and I must find it!

Lunch @ Club Lago

November 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Club Lago, River North, Chicago

It’s a pretty slow day in the office with the holiday coming up, so us suckers who were stuck here (there were only a few) went out for lunch at Club Lago. I liked this place. It had a nice family, old-timey Italian restaurant feel to it. I think the menu is different every day. A couple of my coworkers used to work nearby at former jobs and have been going to Club Lago for years. I didn’t have it but Eric said the eggplant Parmesan will blow your mind. He had it today and his head is still there atop his shoulders, so maybe not.. but pretty dang good, in his opinion. Aside from the food it was nice to just get out of the office and spend some time with coworkers not talking about projects.

Dinner at Colombo’s

Scallops with risotto :: Colombo’s Cafe & Pastries, Hyannis, Cape Cod

On Wednesday we tried to go to the beach but it was really, really windy. We were getting pelted with sand. Finally we just gave up and went home. After getting all the sand off of us, we decided to go shopping. At TJ Maxx I picked up a really discounted dress, some sandals and a floppy beach hat.

For dinner we went to Colombo’s Cafe & Pastries, which opened up in Hyannis that day. Jess’s cousin Michaela is a hostess there so we went to visit her and check out the new restaurant. The concept is kind of something for everything. There’s a bar, a lounge, inside dining, outside dining, a pastry case, gelato, lunch sandwiches, nice dinner entrees, etc. I guess time will tell if this strategy works.

We really liked that all of the pasta was whole wheat and you could get a honey whole wheat crust on the pizzas. The food there skewed towards Italian and healthy, which differentiated it from the other Cape restaurants we’ve been to. Overall, we really enjoyed the food, but as to be expected on opening night of any restaurant, there were some service kinks to work out. I’m sure they just need practice to get everything running smoothly.

This past weekend we hung out a lot with some of Dallas’ friends from college. Molly was visiting from Saratoga Springs, NY where she is now an exercise science professor at Skidmore College. Megan was in the city from a little closer.. the suburbs.. where she teaches 3rd graders. Also? She and her husband Scott are expecting their first baby. So exciting.

On Saturday Molly & Megan met up with us in Roscoe Village and we had a nice dinner at Piazza Bella, followed by a few drinks (not for Megan) and a lot of Guitar Hero at our house. While we were eating that night Megan mentioned that she and Molly and Scott were going to Fogo de Chao on Sunday and of course Dallas had to get in on all that meat action. For those of you who are unfamiliar with these popular Brazilian barbecue places, basically you pay a flat rate. Then you have this little coaster that’s red on one side, green on the other. Flip it with the green side up and you will be bombarded with meat. When you’ve got enough or need a break, flip it to the red side.

The first time I went to Fogo de Chao I wrote that I thought it was a place that you’d only be able to visit once or maybe twice in one year, but I’ve already gone twice this year. Besides this past weekend, I went a few weeks ago with some work associates. They were in town from Tokyo and we wanted to give them a unique experience that they couldn’t get at home. I think we succeeded.

Anyway, it was nice to see Molly and Megan and Scott again. I’m not sure when we’ll see Molly (and hopefully her husband Eric, too) next, but we vowed to see Megan and Scott more, since they’re not too far from us.
