Little Jackie

September 20th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I like to listen to music while working, but I don’t have all of my mp3s in my office yet. Right now they’re on an external drive at home, one that I’d normally have at work, but it’s Mac formatted and they make me use PC at work… so I’m not sure what I’m going to do. In the meantime I’ve been listening to Last.fm, Pandora, Hype Machine and KEXP. I like KEXP mostly in the morning when John Richards is on. He’s a good DJ and plays great songs.

Yesterday morning KEXP played a catchy tune came on called “The Stoop.” I looked it up and it’s by a band called Little Jackie. The band is a duo – singer-songwriter Imani Coppola and programmer Adam Pallin. I listened to other Little Jackie songs on Hype Machine and liked them all. You should check them out here.

Or listen to “The Stoop” here (lyrics below).

This stoop is my throne
This hood is my home
And the sky’s always blue by the brownstones
We in Brooklyn, it ain’t no Beverly Hills
Basically we pay bills, then chill
It’s like east coast bliss, its like west coast diss
We do it like this and you seal it with a kiss
And a pound, that’s just how it go down
It’s the protocol, do you feel me all?

Saturday afternoon talk about the night before
And tonight we’re gonna do it some more
Sunday morning hear the bands in the church play
All day long, every block there’s a new song

Sitting on the stoop in Bed Stuy
Always sayin hi when the brothas walk by
Just proper etiquette
Sitting on the top step
With a bag of chips, sit back, relax, enjoy the bricks
We got a neighborly philosophy
I don’t mess with you, you don’t mess with me
It is what it is, it ain’t all hard up in the hood
Sittin on my front stoop and its all good

Boys in wife beaters and corn rolls
Wear their pants down low so their briefs can show
Girls be always dressed up
Giving their best stuff
Workin that hairdo
Boys are gonna bless you
Always some commotion at the corner store
That the corner cops chose to ignore
Everybody ride tune to a different song
When they pass by I bob my head along

I don’t smoke spliffs but don’t mind the aroma
If the delli out of stella then I settle for corona
And I claim my spot for the evening
Let the part begin, we gonna do it again

Sitting on the stoop in Bed Stuy
Always sayin hi when the brothas walk by
Just proper etiquette
Sitting on the top step
With a bag of chips, sit back, relax, enjoy the bricks
We got a neighborly philosophy
I don’t mess with you, you don’t mess with me
It is what it is, it ain’t all hard up in the hood
Sittin on my front stoop and its all good

Its all good
Its all good
Cause I l-l-l-l-love my hood
L-l-l-l-love my hood
Its all good
Its all good
Cause I l-l-l-l-love my hood
L-l-l-l-love my hood

Sitting on the stoop in Bed Stuy
Always sayin hi when the brothas walk by
Just proper etiquette
Sitting on the top step
With a bag of chips, sit back, relax, enjoy the bricks
We got a neighborly philosophy
I don’t mess with you, you don’t mess with me
It is what it is, it ain’t all hard up in the hood
Sittin on my front stoop and its all good

Born Ruffians

April 1st, 2008 · 1 Comment

Last week I listened to Frank’s Muxtape and one of the songs he selected was “Garcon” by Born Ruffians. On Monday I started listening to Born Ruffians on Hype Machine and became obsessed for the next 8 hours. Basically, they’re just a bunch of Canadian indie pop rock hipsters. Their songs are really melodic and contain a lot of non-lyric vocals, which is why they’ve been getting stuck in my head!

Below is a video for a catchy song called “Hummingbird”. You can listen to a bunch of Born Ruffians songs on their MySpace page or at Hype Machine. I like “Red, Yellow and Blue,” which is an anthem about what colors you’d put on your flag if you started a new country. I also like “I Need a Life” with the repetitive “Oh, but we go out at night.” I can imagine the audience yelling this at live shows… speaking of which, they’re playing at Empty Bottle tomorrow night. I can’t go, but if you like what you hear and you’re in Chicago, you should check them out and let me know how the show is!

Erin mentioned Bobby Bare Jr. so I headed over to HypeMachine to see if I could check out some of his music. I’ve never gotten an error on HypeMachine but this time I did and it made me smile. SHIT! Way to just say it like it is. Still not as good as Twitter’s error message, though. Hype Machine Error
