Seadog Sushi

June 19th, 2011 · No Comments

Remember Hilary’s Urban Eatery? HUE? That closed something like 6 years ago? I haven’t really kept track of what’s been in that space since then, but now it’s Seadog Sushi. Dallas, Kelly, Todd and I went a few weeks ago. It’s still a pretty space. The service was good, everyone was so nice. I thought the sushi was good. Not like amazing, but good. And maybe it was better than good, but we’d called 2-3 sushi restaurants before that and all were super packed. On a Sunday night too! So we were feeling a little let down that we didn’t get our first, second or third choices for dinner. Anyway, check out Sea Dog if you’re around Wicker Park or Noble Square, but I wouldn’t go way out of the way for it. Also, it’s BYO. We didn’t realize it until we sat down and asked for the drink menu. Oops.

Last year my mom came down and we had dinner at Petterino’s, saw the Field’s windows and then went to Mama Mia. This year, we had dinner at HUE, saw the Field’s windows and went to Wicked.

Ana Gasteyer has the lead role, playing Elphaba aka The Wicked Witch of the West. You’re probably familiar with Ana, since she was on SNL for 6 years. She gave an amazing performance, who knew she had such a great singing voice.. especially at the end of the song “Defying Gravity,” right before intermission. People were cheering and crying and going crazy. I think my mom even slipped a curse word or two.

Kate Reinders also gave a great performance as Glinda (The Good Witch), who, in the musical, was way more “Legally Blonde” than I remember her being in the book. I thought her best performance was during the song “Popular.”

Speaking of the book, it was interesting to see how the musical differed from it. Like all book adaptations, a lot of detail was left out and a lot of things happened in the book that were just skipped or changed for the play. To be expected. Both are great works of art in their own seperate ways.

Sunday my brother and his family visited and we had brunch buffet at Hilary’s Urban Eatery (HUE) and then went to the Museum of Science and Industry. We only had a few hours to spend there and it’s so huge we could have spent all day.. one bonus is that since they have a family membership to the Milwaukee Public Museum they get in free to a lot of museums in Chicago, including this one. It’s nice to know I can see my brother, his wife, and my nieces almost whenever I want.. already since I moved here I’ve seen them twice, which is how much I usually would see them in an entire year.

My parents came down from Wisconsin today and we had brunch buffet at Hilary’s Urban Eatery (HUE). Afterward we browsed around Brown Elephant, a second-hand store that was the first resale store in the country designed to specifically raise funds for HIV/AIDS care. Since I live in a Polish neighborhood, we then wandered over to the Polish Museum of America where we learned that Chicago and it’s suburbs (collectively known as Chicagoland) have the largest population of Polish people outside of Warsaw, Poland. The museum’s Great Hall closed for renovations so I think we missed a lot, but the admission is free so I’m not complaining.
