Kamehameha vs. ‘Iolani for the State Basketball Championship

March 10th, 2011 · No Comments

Kamehameha vs. ‘Iolani

That night our friend, Dallas’s fellow Kamehameha Schools classmate, Monte came to pick us up at our hotel. The Kamehameha boys basketball team was playing ‘Iolani for the state championship at the Stan Sheriff Center on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus. Last year Kamehameha lost the final game to ‘Iolani, so a lot was on the line.

Kamehameha Cheerleaders

We met up with a bunch of Dallas’s old classmates and some of their kids. Everyone was super excited. This was a big game.

Throughout the game the score was pretty close, within a few points. But then in the 3rd quarter Kamehameha went up and ‘Iolani could not get with it. Kamehameha ended up winning 64-53.

Monte took this horrible photo of us after the game (my camera’s fault, not Monte’s!):

After the game we went out to celebrate. Monte took us to a nearby sports bar called Rock Bottom (not the chain). Dallas’s classmate Alika was there and it was nice to see him again. At some point we were ushered into a seperate space and karoke began.

That’s when I noticed we were partying with VIPs. Jessie Nakanishi, the Kamehameha Schools head coach, his twin brother and assitant coach Julian, and a few of the other Kamehameha Schools coaches were all there with us celebrating. Pretty crazy. The Nakanishis were one year behind Dallas’s class at Kamehameha schools. I was just watching this interview with Jesse. He looks so young!

Likelike Drive Inn

Later on that night, early in the morning, Monte took us to Likelike Drive Inn for breakfast. This place reminded me a lot of the Wailana Coffee House, a late-night spot we went to last time we were in town.

Loco Moco

I don’t know what Dallas and Monte got, but I dove into my loco moco with record speed! It was so delicious. Especially at 2:30 a.m.!

Relaxing Beach Day at the Moana Surfrider

On Friday, Dallas got up early to reserve two beach spots with 6 chairs at our beach. These things go fast! I think we reserved at about 8 a.m. and within an hour or two there were no beach or pool chairs left for the entire day. Oh, Waikiki! So, basically this whole day Jen, Dallas, Kristin, Chad, Cousin and I were major beach bums.

We were cracking up at this old snorkeler. He reminded us of that old guy from the Six Flags commercials.

Cousin was on high alert for a wardrobe malfunction.

The birds at the beach are insane.

Aside from a trip to ABC Store to get the floats, I don’t think we left the beach all day. .. which would explain the 100 lava flows that were charged to our room!

Hanging out on the North Shore

March 9th, 2011 · No Comments

On Friday I did my gym/ABC Store/Honolulu routine again. After that Dallas and I went shopping. He was planning on wearing shorts and slippers for the wedding, so at the very least I wanted him to go buy some nice shorts and slippers. At Macy’s they had a bunch of really nice Quiksilver shorts. Dallas ended up getting a few pairs.. and a new pair of Scott Hawaii (his favorite brand) slippers with leather straps. Ohhh la la. Not to be left out of the shopping spree, I got a new pair of Quiksilver/Roxy slippers. And we randomly passed by this cell phone accessory store where we each got a new iPhone case. Mine was all cracked! And Dallas has always hated his big, bulky case.

Jen and Kristin were on a spa retreat so after shopping Dallas and I met up wtih Chad and Cousin and had lunch at the Curry House, another one of our favorite Honolulu restaurants. Check out a couple previous visits to Curry House: 2007, 2009.

After lunch we drove up to Oahu’s north shore to Waimea Valley. Dallas’s friend Hoku works at Waimea Valley. We strolled our way to the back and took a dip in the waterfall like we did last time we visited. So much fun!

Hmm.. let’s see a close up of that one….

Lulz. They look like drowned rats! Doing the Shaka!

On the stroll back out, away from the waterfall, I took all of these beautiful photos of Waimea Valley:

When Hoku was done with work we stopped at Foodland and then went back to his house for a barbecue. Jen and Kristin met us there too. We ate so much! Chicken, steak, sausage, ahi, maui chips, mac nuts and two kinds of poke – limu and shoyu. Yum!

A Short Walk in Waikiki

March 9th, 2011 · 6 Comments

After lunch, Dallas headed back to the Moana Surfrider to do more of this. I took a quick walk around Waikiki before joining him.

Kuhio Beach Park was packed!

I stopped by to pay my respects to Duke.

The wall. Haven’t hung out there for a long time.

At ABC Store I saw this monstrosity for sale: SPAM-flavored macadamia nuts. Actually, I kind of regret not buying them just to taste. Might have to do an online order!

At a crazy t-shirt shop, Threadless ripoff.

After a short walk, it was back to the beach for more sunbathing and relaxation!

Blue Water Shrimp and Fish Market

March 9th, 2011 · 1 Comment

When Dallas and I finally ripped ourselves from the beach, we went for lunch at the International Marketplace food court. Dallas got some Korean food from Choi’s Kitchen, which he said was really good.

Dallas told me he read online that his place Blue Water Shrimp and Fish Market was good, so I went there. I got the sweet and sour macadamia nut encrusted opakapaka (Hawaiian pink snapper) plate. When they served it to me I was kind of afraid. So much toppings on the fish. But, the opakapaka was a good solid fish and it was a thick cut, so it did just fine. Very good. Along with the opakapaka I got rice, salad, a small piece of corn-on-the-cob and a slice of pineapple. A lot of food for $12.

The food court at the back of International Marketplace is pretty solid. We visited a few times and each time really liked the food we got.
