Roundarch Holiday Party at ZED451

This year the Roundarch holiday party was at ZED451. I’d never been there, but really liked it. Roundarch basically took over the whole first floor and the second floor was someone else’s holiday party. I really loved the space. It was very warm and inviting. The colors were very rich and the fire was an awesome touch.

ZED451′s main dining room area had this HUGE round buffet. We thought it was one of the biggest buffets we’ve been to, not counting Las Vegas. There was everything on this buffet: shrimp, crab, poke, charcuterie, all the cheeses, duck pastrami. Craziness. It was so good. ZED451 is kind of like an upscale Brazilian steakhouse where they come to your table and offer you all sorts of meats, which they cut off right in front of you. Since this doesn’t scale, they cut all the meat ahead of time and skewered it and there were guys constantly offering you choice cuts of “aged 48 hours blah blah blah.” Point is, it was delicious. There were all kinds of steak, a Mediterranean chicken, fish, etc.

The party was, of course, open bar. And a nice touch was the mojito bar where you could get all kinds of different mojitos: blackberry, pineapple, cucumber, blueberry, cranberry, etc. I had to try hard to keep myself in check, something which Dallas did not do! But that’s ok. I was the one with big plans (cookie party) the next day, not him.

Roundarch never skimps on their holiday parties and this year was no exception. We had a fun time talking to all of my coworkers and their guests. Dallas got to catch up with the people from my office he doesn’t get to see much. Great time! Oh, and here’s a photo my coworker, Rose, took of Adam, Brad and me:

Memorial Day @ Hamlin Park

On Memorial Day my brother’s family came over for a visit. We were going to go to the Notebaert Nature Museum, we tried, but Lincoln Park was so crazy today. We drove around for a half hour and there was NO parking to be had anywhere. Note to selves: Next time take public transportation. I thought we’d be alright since the Nature Museum’s web site shows a map with parking nearby and because when we went to Lincoln Zoo we had no problem, but not today.

Plan B. We decided to pack a small cooler, a few Frisbees and a football and head over to Hamlin Park. I’m still surprised every time at how grown up Steph is. It was just a couple years ago that we were at Wicker Park and she was the one playing on the barrel roller on the playground. Time flies. Hopefully, she and I can hang out more this summer together. Jess took a few hours today, but she got warmed up and was talking and being silly. Once on the playground, though, she started to play hide and seek with some other kids and when she was “it” she counted out loud then ran around to look for kids but was too shy to actually go up and tag them “it.” At least I know that her shyness isn’t just me!

I had fun hanging out all day, talking, people watching, playing catch and running around with Jess on the playground, even though it wasn’t what we’d planned on doing. For dinner we went to Riverview. Jess loved the mini corndogs. Steph and I split two sandwiches. My brother enjoyed a few Fat Tires, which he can’t get in Wisconsin. Amanda tried to order tea but they were out? And they were also out of knives? Weird.

Later on after everyone left and I was waiting for Dallas’ flight to get in, I rode my bike about 6 miles up Damen to Rosehill Cemetery and back down, detouring through Winnemac Park, a lovely little slice of nature I’d never been to before.

Boiling Cauldron of Fajitas

Fajitas at Zapatista
Fajitas at Zapatista, South Loop, Chicago

Friday night we went out for a very much belated Chicagoist holiday/thank-you-for-your-work-in-2007 dinner at Zapatista. This is the same place that we had our appreciation dinner at the end of 2006 and it was just as fun and delicious. I actually ordered the same thing I had previously, which was a great big 1,000-degree boiling cauldron of chicken fajitas. Seriously, I bent down at one point to get something and had a flash of nightmare in my brain thinking about the 3rd degree burn I’d get if my forehead accidentally touched the pig cauldron. I like Zapatista, though. The waitstaff is always nice and they’re always accomodating to our large group.. and after spending so much money there, they let us sit and linger until about 11:00 p.m. when the restaurant closed. Plus it was fun to see everyone again. We really need to get together more. There were a couple people on staff who came who I’d never even met before. Not cool!

Thursday night was our holiday party for work. It was at Manor, which kind of frightened us because it was clearly not the kind of place we’d normally go to and their website is kind of horrifying. (Don’t look at the gallery!). We had nothing to fear after all, though. I think everyone had a great time. From 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. we had the place rented out and all to ourselves. Free drinks, some appetizers. Then at 10 p.m. it was opened up to the public, but we were allowed to get wristbands that let us drink free til midnight. That’s a lot of free drinking. Good thing I had the next day off work!
