Starbucks 100% Kona Coffee

May 11th, 2011 · 1 Comment

If you want to realize how crappy your office coffee is, then march yourself over to Starbucks and order some 100% Kona coffee that is brewed in the Clover machine. The Clover is this fancy-dancy, expensive machine that brews the coffee by the cup. I got hooked on the Starbucks Kona after we got back from Hawaii in March. Our office coffee was tasting like such crap after that trip. After I realized how much I was spending on coffee from Starbucks, I made myself adjust to the crappy office coffee.. sigh. The things we settle for.

P.S. Starbucks also changed their logo in March. You can see it on the cup here. No words, just a picture now.

iPhone Tracker

April 26th, 2011 · No Comments

It has been revealed that everyone with an iPhone has been getting tracked and that the information is being saved to a secret file on the computer where the phone is synced. About a week ago, two guys brought this to everyone’s attention and wrote some software that lets you expose the locations. I ran the software and it was interesting. I’m not going to post images, except the zoomed out one above, which I found intriguing to see where I was on vacation! ha.

By now Steve Jobs has respondedbut people are still suing.

Dramas of Kalalau by Terence James Moeller

Over the years and my visits to Kauai, I have hiked the first two miles of the Kalalau trail twice (2004, 2007), and have always wondered what it would be like to hike all 11 miles. And wondered about the people who go in and camp, and the people that I heard lived in Kalalau Valley (illegally). Thanks to this book, I now have a good idea both about how the trail is and about the people in the valley. The book gives both detailed descriptions of the trail and tips for hiking it, as well as past and recent histories of the valley. There are also a lot of interesting short stories written by people who live in the valley or who have visited it. Also, in some stories I recognized a family name of one of Dallas’s relatives. He confirmed that they were one of the last Hawaiian families to legally live in Kalalau Valley, so the book was also interested from a family history aspect. Recommended to anyone who loves Kauai and has been on the Kalalau Trail.

Distant Echoes (Aloha Reef Series #1) by Colleen Coble

This is a pretty terrible book. It’s poorly written, has an unbelievable storyline, misrepresents Hawaiian life (I’ve met a lot of native Hawaiians and none of them dig an imu and hold a luau every Friday night!), and has blatant religious undertones. Somehow I powered through it. .. just because it was set on Kauai on the south and west shores where I was just vacationing. I will not be reading the other books in the series!

Waking Up in Eden: In Pursuit of an Impassioned Life on an Imperiled Island by Lucinda Fleeson

March 31st, 2011 · No Comments

Memoir of Lucinda Fleeson, a Philadelphia Inquirer journalist who gave it all up to move to Kauai and work at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Lots of every day Kauai life, as well as history of the garden and the island. It even has ties back to Chicago and some little known history there. Lots about flowers and gardening, too. I loved this book!
