Horseshoe Casino

November 24th, 2012 · No Comments

A few of our friends wanted to go to the Horseshoe Casino on the Friday after Thanksgiving, so we decided to go. I hadn’t been to a casino for almost two years, so I thought I’d check it out, even though they’re not my favorite place ever. Dallas and I drove with Marty and Chad, Brian, Trent and Loden went in a separate car. Paul, who lives in Indiana, met us there.

I had fun learning how to play a 3-card poker game. Loden and Chad and I were the only ones at the table, the bets were pretty low at $5 minimum, and our dealer was awesome about teaching us how to play. I even won $125 on just one hand! But I didn’t stop there and ended up losing about $60 total. Not too bad, but winning would have been nice.

Dallas, Marty, Loden and I headed back to Chicago after a few hours. It’s only about a 20 minute drive and we were starving so we went to Smoke Daddy. I heard today that Trent and Brian and Chad didn’t get back to Chicago until something like 3 a.m., but I also heard they raked in the money!

Paul Baker’s Birthday

February 8th, 2011 · No Comments

Last year Paul Baker had so much fun at his birthday that he decided to do the same this year: dinner at Spring World in Chinatown at 7:30 p.m.

To pass some time after work, before dinner, I met Alden and Emily at Wabash Tap for a beer. I liked this place. Good unassuming neighborhood bar. Lots of pool tables.

After a drink there we headed down to Chinatown and met up with Paul Baker, Kate, Paul’s sister Jen, Nicole and Dallas for dinner.

The afterglow!

We all ordered a dish, except Paul who ordered about three, and then we put them all on the lazy susan and tried everything. So good!

After dinner Paul and Nicole and Jen headed home. Alden, Emily, Dallas, Paul and I started looking for a cab to go somewhere else and hang out for a while. We couldn’t find a cab, but we found this:

A free shuttle bus to the Horseshoe Casino! So…. of course we got on the bus.

At the casino we had to sign up for the players club to get our free bus ticket back, but it was no big deal. It was free and took about 5 minutes.

Paul played blackjack for the first time ever. Kate texted me and asked me not to let Paul blow their wedding savings. I asked the same of Dallas. Paul ended up $25 ahead at the end of the night. … uh…. Dallas.. did not.

While at the casino we had a Slim Jim, which was delicious til we noticed the second ingredient is mechanically separated chicken. Ok. I’m not going to lie. It was delicious after that too!

At 1:36 a.m. we took the bus back to Chicago then took the train home. Fun night. Unexpected. Happy Birthday, Paul Baker!

Long Night

When your night ends at 4am with this blurry vision of the Horseshoe Casino, you may have had a really great night or you may have had a really horrible night. Luckily, I had a really break-even night. I’m not a gambler really at all. I put $5 in a slot machine and lost it in about 2 seconds. I put $5 more in and it lasted longer, but I lost it. Then I put $10 in and made $10 off of it. Even Steven. I didn’t bet any more, but then just chose to watch others for the rest of the night. Everyone else made some money, so it was a lucky night for us.

Also, I thought Atlantic City was depressing, but you should see the Horseshoe Casino in the middle of the night.. eep!

If you’re wondering how we ended up at the casino …

It was Abby’s birthday so we all went to Gannon’s to celebrate. Even Rob, who was in town from Boston for the Mackinac race the next day … although he had to call it a night early so he wouldn’t be too tired for the race. We were all having a good time when sometime around midnight or 1am someone said “Let’s go to the boats!,” meaning the gambling boats. Now, this will come up every once in a while and usually it’s like a joke, like, “yeh.. we should.. but it’s too late and we’re too drunk and we’re broke..” but for some reason on Friday night one person wasn’t too drunk to drive, and we didn’t think we were too broke and we just took it serioiusly and went. Except “the boats” became “the casino in Indiana” somehow. Doesn’t matter, anyway. It was only 45 minutes away.

Before that I was out for happy hour at Avec. One or two other times I’ve had wine outside, but this was the first time I have been inside Avec even though it’s only a few doors down from the office. It’s very minimalistic with lots of wood. I couldn’t stay very long, but I’d like to go back and enjoy it more. They had a lot of interesting beers and wines on the menu and I’d like to try the food, too. I’m sure the opportunity will present itself in the near future.
