As far as I can tell, Matsumoto Shave Ice is a North Shore institution. It’s an old family business that’s been open since 1951, anyone and everyone in the general vicinity of Haleiwa, all sorts of famous Japanese and American superstars have been there and their photos are on the wall, etc. Dallas told me they have the best shave ice in Hawaii, and I won’t lie, it was really good, but I think I’ll always have a soft spot for Jo Jo’s in Kaua’i, where I had my first shave ice. Plus, they use Lappert’s mac nut ice cream, which is awesome.

I’d never been to the North Shore of Oahu, so Dallas took me up there one day. We drove around and then stopped at Ehukai Beach, then Waimea Bay Beach Park, then we stopped and shopped a little in Haleiwa and then stopped for shave ice at Matsumoto’s.
These photos are from Ehukai, our first stop. Ehukai is the home of the Banzai Pipeline, which makes it one of the most spectacular and dangerous beaches in the world. In the winter, waves can reach 25 – 30 feet high here. In the summer it’s calmer and good for swimming and snorkeling. The Pipeline is actually about 100 yards to the left of Ehukai Beach. The steepness of the winter waves cause the crest to fall forward and make a tube. And then you get all those classic shots of the surfers inside the tubes of water. Each year there are surfing competitions here.
