This week we got to catch up with Megan, Scott and Molly. … and Sophia! The last time we saw everyone Sophia wasn’t born yet. Megan played Guitar Hero at with us when she was pregnant. Maybe that’s why Sophia was so happy to be at our house watching everyone play Rock Band. At first she was sleeping in her car seat, but who can sleep through the rockin’? She woke up and was all smiley like in the photo above. Later on I was holding her and she was happy as can be. Good baby. Big. Sophia is 3 months old, but I couldn’t believe how much bigger than Kenji she was. Hard to believe that Kenji will probably be that big by the time we see him next. Babies grow fast!

Roundarch Summer Event 2008

August 2nd, 2008 · 3 Comments

A couple weeks ago I accepted the position of Information Architect with a company called RoundArch. I will be starting on September 2, which was my dream start date when my Google contract ended at the end of May. I didn’t know if I’d actually be able to pull off having the whole summer off, but it worked out very well. Also, I hadn’t started looking for a job yet, but I was referred and met with people at Roundarch and everything just seemed to fit, so I accepted a position and am excited to start working for them in a few weeks.

Even though I haven’t begun work yet, Roundarch was nice enough to invite me to their annual summer event. Roundarch’s main offices are in Chicago and New York and then they have sprinklings of people at other locations. Everyone was flown into Chicago for the event and it was a really great way for me to get to know people from all over the company all in one night. I could imagine that if I’d just began work in September that it would have taken much, much longer to meet as many people just in Chicago, let alone the other offices.

We all went on an architectural boat tour of Chicago then took a double-decker tour bus to the Adler Planetarium where we had dinner and drinks. There was also some Guitar Hero and Rock Band action going on there. All of the people from out of town were staying at the Hard Rock Hotel, so after the planetarium we went to the hotel bar there.

I had been on a Wendella architectural tour once before but the weather was pretty rainy. Wouldn’t you know that the beautiful day on Thursday turned to rain right as we were scheduled to leave on the boat? Luckily it cleared up and the second half of the tour we could enjoy on the top deck. The planetarium views are always spectacular and the food was really great. I was enjoying myself, but also keeping myself in check alcohol-wise because I didn’t want to make bad first impressions, so while a lot of people were still in full-on party mode when we hit the hotel bar, I was petering out. I stayed for an hour or two longer and then called it a night. Overall, great time and very nice to meet everyone I’ll be working with soon.

This past weekend we hung out a lot with some of Dallas’ friends from college. Molly was visiting from Saratoga Springs, NY where she is now an exercise science professor at Skidmore College. Megan was in the city from a little closer.. the suburbs.. where she teaches 3rd graders. Also? She and her husband Scott are expecting their first baby. So exciting.

On Saturday Molly & Megan met up with us in Roscoe Village and we had a nice dinner at Piazza Bella, followed by a few drinks (not for Megan) and a lot of Guitar Hero at our house. While we were eating that night Megan mentioned that she and Molly and Scott were going to Fogo de Chao on Sunday and of course Dallas had to get in on all that meat action. For those of you who are unfamiliar with these popular Brazilian barbecue places, basically you pay a flat rate. Then you have this little coaster that’s red on one side, green on the other. Flip it with the green side up and you will be bombarded with meat. When you’ve got enough or need a break, flip it to the red side.

The first time I went to Fogo de Chao I wrote that I thought it was a place that you’d only be able to visit once or maybe twice in one year, but I’ve already gone twice this year. Besides this past weekend, I went a few weeks ago with some work associates. They were in town from Tokyo and we wanted to give them a unique experience that they couldn’t get at home. I think we succeeded.

Anyway, it was nice to see Molly and Megan and Scott again. I’m not sure when we’ll see Molly (and hopefully her husband Eric, too) next, but we vowed to see Megan and Scott more, since they’re not too far from us.
