Hubbard Inn

September 10th, 2011 · No Comments

Hubbard Inn opened in February around the corner from my office and I’ve been there a couple times for lunch now. The first time was in August on a warm day. I went with my coworkers Garrett, Marlena and Bill and we sat outside. I had the nicoise salad and it was delicious. Garrett and Bill had the lamb burger (served with mint, cucumber, red onion, feta, and tzatziki sauce) and Marlena had the gazpazcho. Everyone really liked their food. I thought my salad was great. Very fresh and tasty.

So last week when Greg and I were planning to get together for lunch I suggested Hubbard Inn and he agreed. Funny story – Greg and his wife were planning to go to Hub 51 for dinner one night and Greg remembered that we had gone there for lunch so he looked up my old blog post from that lunch. In that post I wrote “Greg works pretty close to me now, so maybe we’ll be able to meet up more often. The last time I saw him was August of last year!” Yeah. And that was written last August. So, it seems we only get together for lunch on an annual basis!

We went to Hubbard Inn yesterday. It was great to see Greg and catch up after so long! And again, I thought the food was great. I had the caprese sandwich (fresh mozarella, proscuitto di parma, arugula, tomatoes, focaccia). The waiter talked Greg into the fried oyster sandwich (with remoulade and slaw) and he really liked it, although he confessed that he is not really usually an “oyster guy.”

I think Hubbard Inn is a pretty good go-to spot for lunches. Glad that it is so close to our office!

Hub 51

August 19th, 2010 · No Comments

Greg and I finally went on our now annual lunch date. What is it with me only getting together for lunch with friends annually? It seems like that’s the schedule Olivia and I are on now too. Every year Restaurant Week rolls around and we are reminded to get in touch. Greg works pretty close to me now, so maybe we’ll be able to meet up more often. The last time I saw him was August of last year!

We decided to go to Hub 51, located at 51 W. Hubbard. I picked it because I walk past it sometimes and it has a pretty nice outside seating area that is shaded by the building, so you don’t have to sit in the scorching sun.

Of course, the day we went to lunch it rained all morning so we couldn’t sit outside anyway! Oh well.

Greg was craving the cornbread, so we started with that. It was really delicious, moist. You could see the kernels of corn. I like that in a cornbread. A touch of sweetness, but not overly sweet.

For lunch I had the Sonoma Salad, which had spinach, grapefruit, avocado, walnuts, sunflower sprouts & seeds, cranberries. Very light and summery. And it was a big serving. I didn’t finish it and I can usually plow through a salad like nobody’s business. Greg had the Build-Your-Own-Tuna Salad Sandwich. It came on a long plate with three sections. One part had the tuna salad, one had some toasts, and one had a small green salad. You’re left to assemble it yourself, however you want.

I liked the food and atmosphere at Hub 51 a lot. I’d recommend going early for lunch though. When we arrived at 11:30 there was barely anyone there, but by noon or so it was packed. Seems like a popular business lunch spot.

Lunch With Greg

A Mano, River North, Chicago

I was supposed to meet up with Greg for lunch last week but I was having a hectic time at work and was sick. I rescheduled about 3 times and ended up bumping it to the next week. Luckily, it worked out. If I thought I hadn’t seen Cinnamon for a while, I realized this week that I hadn’t seen Greg since May!

We planned to meet at A Mano. I arrived a little early so I was just waiting outside taking a few photos. Then I walked up to the door. Maybe you’re more observant than me and see those signs on the door, but it wasn’t until I was trying to push the locked door that I realized they were closed. The signs say, “A Mano is temporarily closed due to a burst water pipe and severe floor damage that is currently under repair. We hope to reopen as early as Monday 2/3/09. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Hm. So, we didn’t know where to go and just went to Keefer’s which was really closeby. Probably would have just gone to Harry Caray’s but we’d already lunched there one time before. Keefer’s was good. More expensive than I’d expected, but whatever.. I only get to this guy very rarely. As we were leaving we said the same predictable thing we always say: “We need to get together more often.” And then we laughed and I said “See you in 6 months!” Hopefully it isn’t that long!

Sweet Thang & John’s Place Coming Soon to Roscoe Village

July 30th, 2008 · 4 Comments

I had lunch with Greg today at El Tinajon because that’s what I do now. Have lunch with people. El Tinajon is Roscoe Village’s Guatemalan restaurant and they have really cheap lunch specials ($4.95). If anyone wants to meet up for lunch some time, let me know. Good excuse to get out of the house.

It was nice to catch up with Greg. We always go too far in between seeing each other. Greg used to live on Leavitt near Addison about 5-6 years ago and was saying how different Roscoe Village is now. How many new stores and restaurants there are and how the property values have increased. Well, today I noticed signs for two more new restaurants that are opening on Roscoe Street. I’m especially excited about these two places because they are both places that are already established in Chicago, so hopefully they’ll be good. Plus, they are very, very close to my apartment. I wonder if the signs going up this week have to do with the fact that Roscoe Village’s biggest street fair of the year, Retro On Roscoe, is just days away. Free publicity when everyone comes to visit our neighborhood.

Sweet Thang

Sweet Thang‘s site says they’re opening at 2142 W. Roscoe, but that’s where Kickin’ is. I think they’re actually at 2144 W. Roscoe, which is what Time Out Chicago is reporting, and is the former site of Chicago United Mortgage. Sweet Thang lost their Bucktown/Wicker Park lease and that’s why they’re opening in Roscoe Village. I believe they were located right on North by the six-way with Milwaukee and Damen. Sweet Thang specializes in pastries, but their site says that with the new, larger location they’re offering an expanded menu with a bigger kitchen. In addition to freshly baked cakes, desserts, and pastries, they’ll have an expanded deli menu and coffee bar that will serve sandwiches, salads, and coffee & tea drinks. I’m excited for a new salad and sandwich place. And since Roscoe Village’s only independent coffeehouse, MoJoe’s closed, it will be nice to have a new indie coffee joint (alternative to Starbucks on Roscoe).

Jack’s Place

La Mora has been closed
for quite some time. For what it’s worth, we’ve lived in Roscoe Village for 2 years and I’d never been to La Mora. No reason, really. I heard it was ok, but I guess not good enough to make it. So, I was really excited to see what would replace it. John’s Place has been open in Lincoln Park for 14 years and is opening a second location in La Mora’s space at 2132 W Roscoe. Their menu online looks really great so I’m excited to try it out. It seems like La Mora’s been closed a long time. I wish John’s would open already.

You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.

Killian and Liz are surrounded by very artistic family and friends so it was no surprise that the music at their wedding was fabulous. Liz’s brothers Greg and Bill are really talented musicians. Greg has even toured with and recorded albums with Liz Phair, the Goo Goo Dolls, and Jewel, to name a few. For the wedding the brothers reunited their old band called Touche and played a whole set of 80′s crowd pleasers. You better believe that Dallas was their biggest fan!

Also, a few of Killian’s friends are really great DJs and took turns playing throughout the night. Imran (DJ Skor) played at dinner and before the band went on. Max played after the band and then Imran played a little more at the end. Everyone was so great. All of the guests danced like crazy.
