The Sad State of Grant Park

In November they started ripping up Grant Park, removing trees (877, to be exact) and bulldozing to make way for Maggie Daley Park. It looks so sad now. When we look across the street from our office all we see is a construction fence. I have mixed feelings. I never really knew this part of Grant Park, this northern tip, until our office moved over here in the spring. Over the summertime, I grew to quite like it. It wasn’t as intricately manicured as the neighboring Millennium Park and it seems more natural. A great contrast to Millennium Park.. but now we’re getting Millennium Park Part II, I think. And the saddest part, maybe, is that the park isn’t slated to open until 2015, so it’s 2 more years of construction. Sigh. Then again, maybe the new park will knock my socks off and be totally worth it. We’ll see!

It’s pretty cool that Buckingham Fountain is only a 10-minute walk from my office.

Grant Park Fountain

I really like this fountain in Grant Park, but I can’t help thinking about how this guy’s getting pelted in the face with water from all different angles.

Vote!

November 6th, 2012 · 2 Comments

Interrupting my Hawaii updates for this PSA: Vote!

Last year my polling spot was the Logan Square library, but this year things have been redrawn and I had to go to a senior citizen apartment building on Sacramento. There was no line. The big holdup, for me, was because I was the first person to request touchscreen instead of paper. The people there could not figure out how to get the touchscreen working so I had to do it the old fashioned way on paper. Not a huge deal, but man, it sure seems so antiquated! At least I didn’t have to punch anything. I just had to draw in the line with a pen.

As I approached my office, I saw that a lot of roads are already blocked off. I think Biden is arriving in Chicago soon and Obama will be here sometime after that. They’re going to be at the Fairmont, across the street from my office. The campaign headquarters is two buildings away. I’m sure it’s gonna get crazy around here!

Updates:

At lunch I saw that our building’s cross street was all blocked off. Blocked off with dump trucks. That’s the Chicago way! Biden was at the Fairmont Hotel. Apparently Obama was off playing basketball with Scotty Pippen?

Around 4:45 p.m. someone noticed that Lake Shore Drive (on the left in these photos) was totally empty. Barack Obama would be headed up to the Fairmont to meet up with Joe Biden. We watched for a while and then someone noticed a ton of lights progressing north around the Field Museum. Sure enough, a few minutes later we watched the entire presidential motorcade. So cool!!!

Note how sad Grant Park is looking these days while it’s under construction.

AND FINALLY!!
