Bear Creek, WI

May 18th, 2006 · 64 Comments

Bear Creek, WI is a town of about 800 400 people located 124 miles northwest of Milwaukee, about 42 miles west of Green Bay. There’s a Catholic church and school, some houses, and about 1 bar for every 100 people in the town. That’s about it.

This is where my grandpa was born, where he married and had a large family, where he owned a bar for many years, and ultimately where he now rests eternally.

It’s a ghost town. I think I saw one family in their backyard, otherwise the only people I saw in town were the people I was with.

The building where my grandpa’s bar was still has the sign on it. Rusty, but it’s there. I don’t know why I was so amazed by this.

Posted on the door of one of the bars: In a village of 800, how many could really show up?

My aunt & uncle used to live here. I remember going as a kid.

Spence’s Market was across the street from the house my aunt & uncle lived in, a block up from grandpa’s bar. We used to go here as kids and get candy and soda and stuff like that. It was the only market in town.

Now it’s closed.

Not sure what this used to be.

Grandpa Bowden

March 9th, 2005 · 11 Comments

Richard H. Bowden II

Yesterday morning my dad called me with the sad news that my grandpa, his dad, passed away. While I wasn’t that close to my paternal grandparents, the news still upset me a lot. Growing up they lived in Florida. I was born in Florida but only lived there for a few years before we moved to Wisconsin. From Wisconsin we’d take long roadtrips to Florida about every other year, but when I got to high school that pretty much ended. The last time I saw my grandpa was when my grandma passed away a couple years ago. His health was already on the decline and he lived in a nursing home but he was still coherent and was able to get around a bit. I was thankful to spend time with him because when my grandma passed I hadn’t seen her for about 8 years.

One thing I do remember, my fondest memory, you might say, was when I was pretty young and we were visting my grandparents in Florida. My grandpa grew a small patch of sugar cane in their backyard. Grandpa would cut off a slice, cut off the outside skin so we just had a piece of white sugar cane and we would chew and suck on it until we got all of the juice out. I remember it tasting sweet, but kind of watered down sweet. Like I thought it would be even sweeter, like tasting PURE sugar. As a kid, I was kind of let down, but still liked it anyway. I remember coming back from my vacation and several years later sitting in class. My teacher told our science class that the only place in the United States where sugar cane was grown was in Hawaii. He was sure of it. Of course, I raised my hand and proudly told the class that I’d eaten sugar cane in Florida with my grandpa.

I also remember how he’d always write in our Christmas cards how warm the weather was in Florida at that time of the year. As a kid, this made me always want to move to Florida. My grandparents are survived by their 8 children, over 20 grandchildren and more than 7 grandchildren so far. They are missed.

I spent this weekend in Wisconsin visiting with family. Kelly & Jeff were in from Virginia to visit my grandpa, who’s health has not been so great lately. He was just diagnosed with the Big C so you never know what could happen. It was a lot of driving – Chicago to Milwaukee to New London to King to New London to Appleton to New London to Milwaukee to Chicago. The driving sucked, but it was good to see a lot of people I haven’t seen in a long while. And I even drove some legs of the trip, believe it or not.

Mom and Grandma planted this tree when I was a baby. So this tree and I are the same age. It’s grown quite a bit taller than me. Damn these Norder genes! Mary and Rachelle.
