Goose Island Cubby Blue

July 28th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Goose Island, Wrigleyville, Chicago

If you get a chance to try Goose Island’s Cubby Blue this summer, you should. Dallas ordered it and I had a sip. It was really good. From Goose Island site:

Cubby Blue 5.0% ABV: We took our Golden Ale and aged it with real blueberries, not any artificial sweeteners. This adds a subtle touch of fruit character while retaining crisp drinkability, which can be lost with the use of sweet, artificial extracts.

Cubs Brothers

Killian grew up on the north side of Chicago and is the biggest, lifelong Cubs fan I’ve ever met. He and Liz, and actually all of us, have spent a lot of quality time with Killian at games or watching games or talking about the team. One of the very first times I hung out with Killian and Liz was in the bleachers at Wrigley. To have their wedding announcement displayed on the Wrigley Field marquee must have been a dream come true for Killian. After everyone got their photos taken we went to Goose Island Brew Pub for one drink (man, it was HOT out) and then it was off to the rehearsal dinner.

The brick in the last photo is in the ground just off to the side of the Wrigley Field marquee. Malachy told me that Killian purchased it as a Christmas gift one year for him and Naoise.

Eating In: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

March 30th, 2008 · 2 Comments

This post first appeared on Chicagoist.

Goose Island Rootbeer, Sweet Baby Ray’s BarbecueWe’ve been known to harsh on YumSugar‘s more useless features from time to time. Like Name That Dish! or their silly polls like “Do You Like Sandwiches?” But we must admit we had a kind of YumSugar “What Would You Make?” moment the other day.

In our cupboards we had Chicago’s own Goose Island Root Beer and Sweet Baby Ray’s Honey Chipotle barbecue sauce. What would you make with these ingredients? We came across this recipe online and realized that all we needed was our slow cooker and some pork tenderloin and we’d have perfect pulled pork sandwiches. Admittedly, we had our doubts about putting root beer in with our tenderloin, but we shouldn’t have worried. The pork turned out amazing. So tender and moist. We added slightly less barbecue sauce than called for, but then ended up squirting some on top of our sandwich. We also seasoned the tenderloin with salt & pepper before putting it in the slow cooker.

Mr. Chicagoist declared this recipe to be “a keeper” and requested it be made again soon.

Pulled Pork Sandwich

Ingredients
1 (2 pound) pork tenderloin
1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle root beer
1 (18 ounce) bottle your favorite barbecue sauce
8 hamburger buns, split and lightly toasted

Directions
Place the pork tenderloin in a slow cooker; pour the root beer over the meat. Cover and cook on low until well cooked and the pork shreds easily, 6 to 7 hours. Note: the actual length of time may vary according to individual slow cooker. Drain well. Stir in barbecue sauce. Serve over hamburger buns.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from Chicagoist’s Ctrl-Alt-Rock event on Thursday night. I think it was even more of a success than last year. We had 4 bands play and I negotiated a deal with Goose Island to get a few kegs of 312 Urban Wheat donated. Double Door agreed to sell the 312 for $3/cup and I put up a $300 tab so all of the 312 beer was either free or only $3. The bands were really great and probably about 300 – 400 (??) people came out even though it was only about 3 degrees outside. It was a fun time!

More recap here and more photos here and here.

FeedBurner has grown so much that we needed to build out more office space. Luckily, we were able to do this just down the hallway from where our current office is, in a room we’ve been referring to as “SideBurner.” Before we put any furniture in SideBurner or had anyone officially move in, we had a party to break in the space. There were 2 pony kegs of Goose Island beer, at least a case of wine, and catering from Maggiano’s. Fun time! Later some of us went by De Cero for a drink, but it was not what we were in the mood for. Plus we couldn’t all sit together, so then we went to Jefferson Tap for a tower of onion rings and a round of Fat Tire.
