Ed’s Cheesecake, Ginbucks, Wicker Park, Chicago

In certain circles, Ed‘s cheesecakes* are legendary. He is only known to make them on special occassions and most of the time you’ll only get one.. ever. When I was laid off a few weeks ago, Ed came out that night, gave me a hug and said “I’ll make you a cheesecake.” I was super excited because I’d heard about the cheesecakes plenty of times but had never experienced one personally.

Saturday night when we were out for Trent & Allison’s birthday Ed said he made the cheesecake for me and it was ready whenever I wanted it. The next day we went to Ginbucks** to watch football and Ed brought the cake there. We all ate it after having about 8 orders of chicken fingers and while watching the Bears blow the playoffs. Bears losing = not good for hangovers (not that I cared, but most people did), chicken fingers and cheesecake = good for hangovers. The cheesecake was white chocolate with a raspberry swirl and a chocolate crust. Worth the wait, totally!!! Delicious.

* Ed says this was the last free cheesecake he’s making. Next he wants to go into business and sell them. He totally could. So yummy.

** We’re all mourning the passing of the Ginbucks days. Scott sold the bar, yesterday was the last day under his ownership. We hear the new owner is changing the name and remodelling. See some of our adventures at Ginbucks.

Last night Margaret, Sam & I went and saw Spectacle ’04: Sink. Sank. Sunk…, a Redmoon Theater production, in Ping Tom Memorial Park in Chinatown.

It’s hard to describe the show we saw:
Part 1: Sink. is from 6:00 – 6:45: The characters in the spectacle are scattered throughout the park and you can interact with them.
Part 2: Sank. is from about 6:45 – 7:45: There’s a concrete narrative and the characters all collect in a central playing space.
Part 3: Sunk…: The finale is a progression down to the river where the ending takes place.

Whether you’re a little kid or an intellectual theater aficionado you’ll like this performance, so just go. It’s still playing tonight and tomorrow night. And it’s free – you can’t beat that.

Passing up authentic Asian fare in Chinatown, we went and got some Americanized Pan-Asian at Penny’s in Wicker Park afterwards. It was really good. And cheap. Afterwards, the old favorite, Ginbucks.

Low-quality video clips:
» The band in Part 1 (.mov, 588k)
» Hobo Limerick (.mov, 588k)
» I Love Trains (.mov, 452k) The entire performance stopped and they did this dance almost every time an El or Metra train went by the park.

Hmm. . . Gorging ourselves at Taste of Chicago wasn’t enough, so after running errands downtown Nancy came down from Milwaukee and we went to Margie’s Candies for ice cream!! And then we met Abby and Kristin out and had a nice dinner at Settimana Cafe and went out for drinks after that. The next day we got up and had breakfast and then Jeannette & Tien had to leave for the airport. Thanks for visiting guys, I had a great time (even if it was too short and all we did was eat)! I’ll see you in September.
