Lappert’s Ice Cream

July 28th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Usually Dallas and I spend the bulk of our Hawaiian vacations in Kauai, but this time we were only there for two days, one night. We stayed at the house he grew up in, sleeping in his childhood bedroom on his and his brother’s childhood beds.. which was.. interesting.

When we arrived in Lihue we ran some errands, went shopping at and around the Kukui Grove Shopping Center, and had lunch at Genki Sushi. Then we decided it was time to get going to Waimea, where we were staying. On the way I made Dallas stop in Hanapepe so we could get my favorite ice cream in the universe: Lappert’s Kauai Pie.

lapperts

My favorite flavor is Kauai Pie, which is Kona coffee ice cream swirled with chocolate fudge, coconut flakes, macadamia nuts and vanilla cake crunch. OMG. So good.

Lappert’s ice cream is made right there in Hanapepe and the shop that we stopped at is the original. The ice cream is delicious. Dallas complained that it was expensive, which, it was, but this is a once a year (or more) kind of thing, so I don’t mind paying!

Genki Sushi, Lihue, Kaua’i

Dallas and I went to Lihue to Kukui Grove Center, the largest shopping center on Kaua’i, not that it’s really that big. We looked around Macy’s but didn’t get anything, we each got some things at Déjà Vu surf shop (I got a Billabong handbag and this cute Paul Frank tshirt), and then Dallas got some University of Hawaii caps at Lids. For lunch 2007_03_genki_logo.jpgwe went to Genki Sushi. I love that place. It’s not the best sushi ever, but it’s so much fun. Dallas took me there last time we were in Kaua’i and I liked it so much, we had to go back.

Basically, the sushi chef stands in the middle and puts things a conveyer belt that runs around the restaurant. You take what you want off the belt and eat it. At the end the waitress adds up how much you owe based on color coded plates.

After lunch we went to Borders and ran into Dallas’ brother, Jordan, who was also out shopping. I wanted to pick up a few books by local press that wouldn’t be available on Amazon or in Chicago. I also wanted to pick up some local tunes. I asked Jordan for advice on some contemporary Hawaiian music and he showed me what to get, but told me the CDs were cheaper at Costco, so we went over there and bought them.

Genki Sushi

July 17th, 2005 · 7 Comments

The whole reason we went to Hawaii in the summer and not the spring is to attend a wedding. And Dallas, great planner that he is, got a new suit, new shirt, even a tie.. but didn’t get shoes before we left. So, off we were to Kukui Grove in Lihue to shop for shoes. We stopped to get some sushi quick at Genki before he dropped me off to go play golf.

Genki Sushi originated in Japan and now has like 200 locations around Japan, Hawaii, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Bankok. Their site even says they have one restaurant in New York City, although I don’t remember ever hearing about it. Maybe it’s new. What New York does have that serves the same market as Genki is Go Sushi. Both are reasonably priced sushi in a very casual atmosphere. Chicago should take note. This is something we definately lack here. Going out for sushi in Chicago is always a dress up, sit down, candle-lit, expensive affair.. and while that’s nice, it’s would be great to have some quicker, cheaper options.

A fun thing that Genki has that Go doesn’t is the sushi conveyor belt. It’s located in the center of the restaurant and all of the seating is around the belt. The sushi chef makes the sushi, with the help of the automated sushi robot, and then places it on the conveyor. The diner just sits and waits til something interesting goes by them and they take it off the belt and eat it. Pricing is based on the color of the ring on the plate. The prices were $1.40/$2.00/$2.60/$3.75/$4.60 depending on the plate you took. When you were done eating the waitress totalled your bill by adding up the plates on your table.
