Dallas’s parents were in town last weekend to watch Makai during all of Josh and Liz’s wedding festivities, so Aunty Laura had her annual early Thanksgiving dinner on the Sunday before they left. Last year Makai was so little we were almost afraid to have different people hold him. It was his first big party! This year he played with kids and visited family and ate SO MUCH Thanksgiving dinner. All of it: turkey, stuffing, ham, potatoes, green beans, cranberries and pumpkin pie! Such a big boy now.

Two funny points: 1. Rory asked to see Makai when we arrived so I took him over. Well, he didn’t really want to see Dallas! And ran away. 2. Makai was sitting on a kind of stool with some towels piled up so he could reach the table. One minute he was there, one minute he’d slid down onto the ground. He didn’t make a peep, so it took us a second to notice! I think he was too stunned!

This is the 8th year, by my count, that we’ve gone to Doug and Naoko’s Labor Day barbecue. Last year they didn’t host a barbecue Naoko was very pregnant and had 3 kids running around. Kind of a lot to try to host a big party too! I was also very pregnant. Doug and Naoko’s daughter, Hana, was born one day before Makai! While the big kids* – Tommy, Kenji, Eddy, Vince, Harmony, and others – were off playing Hana and Makai stayed back and played with each other and with the adults. It was supposed to rain but the weather stayed perfect all day. As always, great food and nice to see everyone!

* It feels weird to say Tommy and Vince and the others are the “big kids” but compared to Makai and Hana, they are! Also, Mitch and Chris were there and they’re both teenagers, so maybe not the “biggest kids.”

Doug & Naoko like to have a Labor Day party every year. Here are some photos from years past:

2005: we played a lot of horseshoes
2006: Jordan brought fresh smoked salmon from Alaska. He’d just been on a trip there.
– 2007: No Party? Or just no photo or post?
2008: Lots of kids. First year I noticed that?
2009: Also celebrated Aunty Gail’s retirement. One more photo from that year.
2010: Doug & Naoko have a new house
2011:Two new babies – Eddy and Ty – and Caroline and Danny expecting one more.
2012: How did the kids get so big?????

A Visit From Jordan and Liz

August 18th, 2014 · 1 Comment

Jordan and Liz came for a visit over the weekend. It had been about seven years since they visited Chicago. Dallas sees them sometimes when his work takes him to the Pacific Northwest, but I hadn’t seen Jordan and Liz since their wedding on Kauai. Makai was the perfect excuse to get them back out to Chicago for a visit!

They arrived on a Thursday night. On Friday, Dallas and Jordan went golfing. On my way to work I directed Liz to all the shopping on Michigan Avenue and she was able to occupy herself for most of the day :). She loved the buildings and the river and the shopping and the architecture and everything. It’s so different from where they live, just north of Seattle. After daycare, Liz and I took Makai to play at Palmer Square. Then we met back up with Jordan and Dallas to have dinner at The Radler. As you can see, Makai is super happy to be back at his most frequented restaurant. :).

Still working on that kalbi!

On Saturday we headed out to Danny and Caroline’s new house in Riverside. Cory and Chris, who moved to Vail about three years ago, just happened to be in town so it was nice to get the family together while those we don’t see often were visiting. Danny smoked a ton of pork butt and Dallas grilled some kalbi ribs. I handed one to Makai and he shoved it right in his mouth, like a good Korean. Obviously he didn’t really bite off the meat and eat it, but he was really sucking the bones! I bet he can’t wait till he’s old enough to really get in there!

At the end of the month it’s Cory’s 40th birthday, so we celebrated ahead of time with tons of cake and cookies. Rory, Edy, Tommy, and Kenji were all there to help her blow out her candles.

I told them to give me the smallest size possible!

On Sunday Dallas and Jordan went golfing again. Liz and Makai and I went to the farmers market and then later on we all met up at Parson’s. It looked like it was going to rain, but luckily it didn’t . We ate a ton of chicken and Makai loved the bread and hush puppies. Afterwards we stopped at Tastee Freez for some treats! And then we all just chilled at home. Very early Monday morning Liz and Jordan had to head back home. I’m so glad they visited though and finally got to meet Makai! Such a fun weekend!
