Dim Sum at Jade Asian & Pastries at Paris Baguette

August 26th, 2010 · No Comments

On Saturday morning we asked Jeannette and Yvan if they’d be up for dim sum since Dallas and I hadn’t had it since the last time we were in New York a year ago! Dallas’s cousin Jessica from Honolulu is living in Greenpoint, Brooklyn now after having completed school at FIT, so we invited her to come along with us. Jeannette and Yvan have a car so after picking up Jessica, we headed out to Flushing, Queens and went to Jade Asian Restaurant.

Jade Asian is set up like a huge banquet hall. Kind of like Jing Fong, where we sometimes go in Manhattan. The thing about Flushing, though, is that it’s out there. Far. And it’s really Asian. In Manhattan you get a lot of tourists, a lot of non-Asians who live there and go to dim sum. Out in Flushing? I was the only non-Asian in a huge ballroom of people. Not that I really care. Just an observation. The dim sum food at Jade Asian did not disappoint. We tried all of our favorites and then some.

Doing my best impression of Jeannette, I leaned back and moaned about how full I was and then leaned forward and chipperly said “Let’s get dessert!” Kidding, but desert was on the agenda, as right across the street from Jade Asian is Paris Baguette. You know Jeannette can’t pass that up!

I was a little confused about why such a French-sounding place was smack dab in the middle of such an Asian neighborhood, but I just read on the Paris Baguette website that they are the No. 1 franchised bakery in Korea, with 1,700 locations in 3 different countries. It should be noted that the only New York location is this one out in Flushing, Queens. Of course when I went inside, it made a little more sense. Amongst the pilethera of French pastries there were a lot of Asian influences: red bean fillings, grean tea flavoring, etc. I recognized a hotdog roll I used to get in Chinatown.

Jeannette went to town and got a bunch of pasteries. I ended up just getting a coffee drink because I was so full from dim sum. Later on Jeannette admitted to Jessica that this is a well-travelled trip for them with guests. Dim sum at Jade Asian, dessert at Paris Baguette. Works for me! Great food, fun morning, and nice to see Jessica again.

On Saturday night Tien took Dallas and I to a Mets game in the brand new Citi Field. I’d been to Mets games before, when I lived in NY, but it was at the old Shea Stadium. I wanted to check out the new digs.

Everyone got a Mets Build-A-Bear as the free giveaway that night. Dallas gave his to some guy who was looking for an extra. Maybe he had 2 kids or something. Tien and I kept ours.

The new stadium is nice, but what’s the last thing you’d ever want to see at the ballpark?

Caloric information on the food? Ding ding ding! Calories shouldn’t count at ball games!

I guess this is a new NY law or something.

Zoiks! I am never eating at the ballpark again! Just kidding. Right after taking these photos I got a burger, fries and a beer.

The weather at the stadium was nice all night and the Mets actually won. Surprising! Angel Pagan hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the eighth inning. Whenever the Mets make a homerun, the homerun apple makes an appearance. You can see it here on the bottom.

Mets vs. Astros

Mets vs. Astros
Mets vs. Astros, Shea Stadium, Flushing, Queens

The New York Mets beat the Houston Astros 4 – 2 tonight. It was freezing out – 40 degrees & windy – so we were all bundled up. Many of the seats at Shea Stadium were empty. A freezing cold ballpark really isn’t the palce to be eating Chinese pastries unless you want to end up with a face full of cream, which I did. To stay warm, I drank a huge cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, the official coffee of the Mets, and now I feel like I won’t be able to fall asleep until 3 a.m.

I should be jealous that Tien met Mr. Met and got his autograph, but I’m not. Mr. Met is kind of creepy. The Shea DJ.. that guy is cool.

I’ve heard it’s been said that the Mets are New York’s middle class baseball team and that the Yankees are New York’s upper class baseball team. The stadium tonight had no shortage of the middle class, sporting mullets or stuffing their faces with nachos and hot dogs. I have a feeling that it’d be the same at Yankee Stadium. This is the usual scene at any ballpark, isn’t it?

Thanks, Waikin, for the ride home in your brand new car (I promise I didn’t spill a drop of coffee). If you live in the city and you have a car, you will always be a friend of mine.

Chuck’s Going Away Happy Hour

Chuck's Going Away Party

Last night we gathered to bid Chuck farewell and good luck. This is his last week at work and he will be joining the USA Network on Tuesday. Chuck sits across the hall from me and I’ll truly miss our daily banter.

Then, last minute, I got tickets to go to the U.S. Open with Chuck and his wife Tiffany and one of Chuck’s friends. It was surreal. The stadium too bright and clean, the fans too polite, the announcer too English. Who would imagine taking an elevator in a stadium up to their seats? When the match was delayed because it started sprinkling, there was a team of men all dressed the same who came out with little white hand towels and blotted the court. Eventually, the game was called off because of the light mist/sprinkling that was occurring. Pansies.

Afterwards, we went to Jackson Heights, which should be called Little India, and ate some really gnarly Indian food.
