Just cut the cake, Danny!

Last year, while everyone was still in town visiting for Christmas, Dallas’s family in the suburbs threw me a bridal shower. This year right after Christmas they threw Caroline and Danny a baby shower. Caroline is expecting a baby boy in the beginning of February.

I bought the baby his first Packers outfit, which Caroline loved and Danny hated! It was a onesie, hat, bib and a Packers 101 board book. Caroline was holding the hat up and was like “oh look, he could wear this home from the hospital!” and I said, “yes, it will be right after the Packers win the Superbowl!” Danny was not amused.

Goodbye Cory & Chris

October 10th, 2011 · No Comments

The truck was just a little bit gigantic!

Cory, Chris & Aunty Laura strategizing.

Doug played a lot of box Tetris inside the truck. Danny did a lot of heavy lifting.

Tommy and Kenji had a ball running up and down the ramp. Look at mean Uncle Danny, though. He made them stop.

Meanwhile their brother Eddy chilled out with their grandma in the middle of the chaos.

Eddy was born in January, Tyler in August. So much bigger than even a month ago!

Cory & Me. Some family members wouldn’t talk to me with that shirt on, but the game was that night!

On Sunday Cory and Chris had a Load The Truck/Moving party. Chris got a job in Vail, CO and actually left more than a month ago to work there. In the meantime, Cory packed up all their things. Chris came back this weekend to get her and all their stuff. They rented a truck and are driving out to Vail with their dog, Zoe.

I arrived to the party about an hour late and thought I would have missed a big chunk of the loading, but the truck wasn’t even there yet! And there were only about 8 people and 3 of them were pregnant (Caroline, Toni, Chris’s sister)! There was so much stuff, I thought we would be there all night. Slowly people showed up, all hoping they’d missed the bulk, but they did not! Aunty Laura said that is how the family works, but reminded me that Cory is a part of the family too and she knows that about everyone! haha. It turned out that everyone did their fair share of heavy lifting… well, except the pregnant girls, babies, and older aunties.

Dallas was on a flight to South Carolina for work, so I was there on my own and was willing to do whatever I needed to. Cory helped us when we moved to Roscoe Village and she and Chris have helped us with other things on numerous occasions, so we owed them that. Luckily it went pretty fast once we got going. I don’t think everything made it into the truck, though. I was sort of hoping the bike roof rack wouldn’t make it or this cool trunk they have wouldn’t and I’d be forced to take it for…. safe keeping.. but alas, those things fit in. They’ll be towing a car on the back of the truck, so hopefully they can fit some things in there too.

After the moving was done, we all had dinner. Aunty Laura made a whole spread of her famous flank steak, chili, salad, mac n cheese, cone sushi, char sui, and all sorts of things. Naoko made an Italian cream cake and like always, it was delicious!

Good luck, Chris and Cory! You guys will be missed!

On the eve of Christmas Eve we went to dinner at Dallas’ Aunt Laura’s house. Danny and Cory were there, too, as well as their doggies, Maggie and Zoe. Laura’s actual grandson, Hideto, hadn’t arrived yet from California, so the pooches got a lot of spoiling. Including new doggie beds by the fireplace at grandma’s house, a new dog bed for Maggie to bring home and a new shearling jacket for Zoe.

For dinner we had Aunt Laura’s special flank steak and some pork wontons. Dallas’ family’s dinners are always a mix of Asian and American cultures, so we also had edamame, kimchi, tofu, rice and deviled eggs.

After dinner we trimmed the tree, which was in such dire shape that I later learned that Danny and Laura went out the next day and bought a new one and started over. Still fun. We opened a few gifts also and then had coffee and tea and dessert.

A nice way to kick off the holiday weekend.

** Does anyone know what would be causing my camera to sometimes take photos like the one of Corie trimming the tree? I’ve also been having memory card errors where it will just show up as “corrupted data” instead of the photos.

Thinking You’re Getting Mugged = REAL Funny. Oh, and Flank Steak = YUM

October 14th, 2005 · 2 Comments

flank_steak.jpg

Last night when I left work I went home to meet up with Dallas. We were going to just chill out and cook and watch tv. I got off the el at Division on the blue line and was walking on Ashland towards Division. All of a sudden there was this tugging on my arm and my purse was getting wrenched away. I almost had a heart attack. Then I looked and it was Dallas pretending to mug me. He got quite a laugh out of it and the surprise he gave me.. as did the Hispanic lady who saw it all go down while she was waiting for the bus. I said I wished there was a big strong guy standing there pretending to punch him in the face for mugging me. THAT would have been REAL funny.

Anyway, the flank steak with caramelized onions and a balsamic glaze was really good. I think we finally have a rhythm down in the kitchen so we can spit out these meals really efficiently. Usually I get “assigned” something like “you make the basamic glaze” and then Dallas does the rest. Or actually, I act as the sous chef a lot, prepping stuff.. or doing sides. But always, no matter what, I get scolded for being too precise or detailed. It’s hard to take off a baker’s hat when you’re cooking and my first interest when I was younger was baking and candy and cake making, so when it says “reduce down to a quarter cup (about 5 minutes)” you better believe I’ve got my eye on the clock and the quarter cup measurer out waiting to see if it’s reduced enough. Anyway.. but I remember the first few times we tried to cook together and it was kind of a disaster. We both wanted to do everything and we wanted to each do it our own way. I don’t mind stepping back and letting him take control of it (nothing like getting dinner made for you!) and he doesn’t like doing sides and the other crap.. so it works.

The Cooking Light recipe for Flank Steak with Caramelized Onions and Balsamic Glaze follows -
