Logan Square Farmers Market at the Congress Theater

Great news! The Logan Square Farmers Market has moved indoors for the winter! From 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Sundays, stop by the lobby of the Congress Theater and check out the winter market. They expect to run through March, with a few Sundays off for holidays. I assume then they’ll go back to their outdoor location on the boulevard.

The winter market plans on still providing locally produced agriculture products, so expect root vegetables and fruits that have been “put up” by canning or drying. Although, right now there are still a ton of apples at the market. And cider! I got a bag of honey crisp apples and some cider for Dallas. I’m told that throughout the winter you can also still get greens and mushrooms that they grow indoors or under glass or plastic. And there will still be farm fresh meat and eggs. Of course, all the baked goods and prepared food items will still be available. Along with the apples and cider, I got some lettuce and 2 bags of homemade granola.

As well, the winter market may also showcase Logan Square Chamber member businesses. All in all, it doesn’t seem like they’re going to have issues running the market through the winter, which is exciting.

I’d never been to the Congress Theater before and thought it was funny that my first trip there was not for a concert, but for the farmers market!

Summer Weekends in Logan Square

August 31st, 2009 · No Comments

The last day of August. This summer has gone by so fast. And it’s been such an odd summer. I’ve had a few conversations with friends about this lately, how this summer has been odd. The weather has been very mild, not hot at all. We’ve been so busy, yet when I think about it, there are a lot of friends that I haven’t seen for a long time. What were we doing? How did the summer slip by? I feel like there were only a few weekends this summer where I just hung around the neighborhood. Even if I had plans, I tried to go to the Logan Square Farmers Market as much as possible. Many times I met Jess over on the Boulevard to browse sales and the market.

A few times Jess and I also attended Summer Sessions on the Square. There was just one this past Saturday. I think there is one more in September and then they’re done for the year. This is a fun way to support the neighborhood. People pack wine and picnics and head to The Sqauare where bands play. Lots of families, lots of groups of friends just hanging around and enjoying the weather and music. The suggested donation is $5.

Family Visit to Chicago

August 24th, 2009 · 1 Comment

This past weekend we had a bunch of my family down from Wisconsin for a visit to Chicago. My cousin Kelly, Jeff, Tessa and Charlotte came on Friday night and stayed over til Saturday. My parents and my Aunt Sue arrived on Saturday and stayed over til Sunday. My brother Richard, Amanda, Jessica, and Stephanie came down for the day on Saturday. We hung around on the roof deck, played bags, had a barbecue, and went to Palmer Square park. After a lot of people left, my dad and I played Mario Karts on the Wii and my mom and I and Dallas played Tetris on the Wii. Sunday morning my parents and my aunt and I went to brunch at Dunlay’s on the Square and then walked through the Logan Square Farmers Market. It was fun to have everyone down for a visit!

These photos are from Palmer Square. Except the last one of Charlotte, who didn’t go to the park. She wasn’t feeling well on Saturday but we did manage to get a few smiles out of her.

Mom, Dad. Think dad is giving the finger on purpose. Kelly was trying to pose them & make them kiss. Not sure why.

Turkish Festival at Daley Center Plaza Farmers Market

May 29th, 2009 · 1 Comment

Yesterday Anjum and I went to the Daley Plaza Farmers Market again. They happened to be having a Turkish Festival on the plaza, as well as the market. There was Turkish drumming, music, dancing, fashion show, and tons of Turkish food. We had planned on getting salads after wandering around the market, but got caught up in all the Turkish excitement and decided to eat there. Anjum had a bean salad. I got a Mediterranean chicken plate. It had a small salad, pita bread, rice and a kind of stew made of chicken, broccoli, potatoes and mushrooms in a tasty, savory gravy.

Last week Thursday was the first day of the season that the farmers market was held at Daley Plaza. I’d never been to the farmers there and made plans with Anjum to walk over at lunch and check it out. I really wanted to get fruit, but of course, fruits are not in season yet at the farmers market. There was a ton of asparagus, spinach and rhubarb. We tried a few different cheeses and I bought a bag of cheese curds. There were some herbs, but not an abundance. I bought a large bunch of thyme for $2.

Because this was the first farmers market of the season, Mayor Daley was there to speak. We didn’t stick around to hear what he was talking about, but I did hear him mention that the totes they were giving out were designed by some school kid. In addition to free totes, we also got free cheese samples, an mini bottle of olive oil and a free Soyjoy bar.

Daley Plaza is not far from my office so I think I’ll be going out for a walk on Thursdays when my schedule allows. I don’t know if I’ll end up buying a lot of produce at this market because my neighborhood market will be opening in June, but it will still be nice to get out of the office and look around.
