Young@Heart Choir

April 18th, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve been really sick this week. Like I’ve had a fever of 102 and have been laying in bed for a couple days. Not even on the couch, but in bed. I hate that feeling so much, but I was able to catch up with Ellen, a show I secretly really like. Yesterday she had the Young@Heart Choir on the show. They’re a bunch of elderly people who sing contemporary songs. On the show they sang “I Feel Good” and “Hey Ya.” It was so funny. I found myself smiling after feeling like I hadn’t smiled for days. I laughed out loud when they were shaking it like a Polaroid picture. The Young@Heart documentary opens this weekend and I hope to see it on Netflix, if not in the theater.

I also have had so much laying down time that I’ve been able to get to World 6 on the New Super Mario Brothers on the DS Lite.

Live Band Karaoke :: Quencher’s, Bucktown, Chicago

After Hachi’s Kitchen we went to Quencher’s. I’m pretty sure I’m the only person in Chicago that hadn’t been there yet. Everyone always talks about how great it is and it is. We had a great time. They have so many beers there from all over the world. I was pushing my luck by asking if they had the Tahitian beer Hinano (they didn’t), but we were able to get Steinlager, a beer from New Zealand that we drink in Hawaii. That night at Quencher’s happened to be live band karaoke night. I had been drinking for more than 6 hours at that point and was pretty drunk, but not so much as I got on stage and sang, which is a good thing. At the end of the night Susan said we should all pick a song, practice for a week, and reconvene next Thursday night. The next morning I thought, “we’re not really going to do that.. ” but then I got an email from Allison and on the bottom it said “6 more days…. ” I’m in trouble!

Last week Thursday work let out early to go to Happy Hour at Jefferson Tap. Somehow I quickly downed 3 or 4 Sam Adams White, which I thought was Sam Adams Light (which I ordered) but then kept drinking even when I found out they were giving me the wrong thing. It was pretty good. I haven’t been out with my coworkers for a long time and I was having a great time, but I had dinner plans that night so I had to leave at about 7pm.

Susan, Allison and I had sort of a Hawaii reunion planned. After spending every day together for 10 days and then not seeing each other for a few weeks, we decided to get back together. Susan’s friend Ellen also joined us. Susan just moved to Logan Square, and I haven’t hung out there too much so I asked if there was a place she wanted to go in her neighborhood. She suggested Hachi’s Kitchen, a sushi restaurant that she said was good every single time she’s been there. Allison met me at Jefferson Tap and we drove up to Logan Square. I’d forgotten how pretty Logan Boulevard is. And, not only was I surprised at first that Logan Square has a sushi spot, but that it’s really cute and kind of fancy. The food was great and I really loved the interior. Would definitely go back.

I only have photos of our two appetizers. I probably would have taken more, but there was a green-colored martini called “The Chicago River” that put me over the edge.

Ringing in the New Year

Rachelle, Jeannette, Jessica – just after we arrived at Jesse, Nara and Brian’s party. Before the party we had dinner at Kin Khao. Jessica had to leave the party early to meet up with some other friends but the rest of us stayed.

Who’s who?

It didn’t take long before people started dancing. Here Brian, Jeff and Ellen show off their moves.

Go white boy!

This one’s just for you, Brian. I lied when I said I didn’t have any embarrassing photos of you dancing. What’s with the prayer pose?

Jeannette strikes a sexy pose.

Yvan strikes a not-so-sexy pose.

Brian makes a cell phone call out the window, unaware of what’s going on behind him.

More fun at Brian’s expense.

Brian and Sarah. Are you confused from the multiple Brians yet? There were 3, I think.

Game Night

April 30th, 2002 · Comments Off

If Jeannette & Yvan’s party had a theme it was Foods That Make Your Breath Smell Like Ass. Jeannette and I made a delicious (everyone said so, not just us!) Garlicky Greek Salad and some garlic bread. Brian and Ellen brought pizza. Alice brought the most powerful, bitter beer I’ve ever tasted. Later on while the ten of us played a game we munched on Ranch flavored potato chips.
