Smoked Meat at BBQ Inn

That night we went to Larry & Eleanor’s house in Kalaheo for pupus. Larry showed us his mountain apple tree and we tasted the fruit from it – kind of sweet, with a kind of bitter skin and was much smaller than a normal apple. Eleanor and Larry had prepared and purchased a ton of pupus. Everything was so good, I wanted to eat a ton, but I also wanted to save room for the dinner I knew we were having later on at one of our favorite restaurants, La Playita Azul.

We dropped off Dallas’ dad, George, and his sister Caroline at Barbecue Inn in Lihue for a night out with George’s cronies. Then Dallas and Kathy, his mom, and I went over for mexican seafood in Kapa’a at La Playita Azul. This was a place we fell in love with last year and HAD to go back to.

Later on, back at Barbecue Inn, George’s friends peer pressured me into eating some smoked meat of some sort.. I think they said it was wild pig? I don’t know. It actually wasn’t as bad as it looks. It’s the pride of Kaua’i, I’m told.

Caroline and I don’t golf, so while everyone was teeing up at Poipu Bay, we went to check out the National Tropical Botanical Garden. The actual tours were pretty booked up and were kind of expensive. Luckily there are lots of paths around the visitor center with lots of plants to explore. Plumeria is my favorite flowering tree and Pikake is my favorite scent of the flowers I’ve smelled in Hawaii.

While at the Garden I remembered last year when we were snorkeling that there’s a secluded beach you get to go to if you go on a Botanical Garden tour. While snorkeling we’d seen it from the ocean and were told you could only get to it by land by going on the tour. This sounded like a challenge to Caroline so we drove around and hiked on a path trying to see if we could find it but we gave up really quickly.

On the drive back to the condo we came across a beached Hawaiian Monk Seal at Lawai Beach. These are some of the most endanged species on the planet. Since they come up on some of the most popular beaches in Kaua’i to have their babies and we don’t want to disturb them, officials rope off the area they’re laying in and put up warning signs. If you touch or harass the seals you’ll be in big doo doo with the cops.

A little farther down the road we pulled off at Turtle Cove and saw some honu, or Green Sea Turtle. These are also at risk of becoming extinct. It was cool to see them, but even cooler was last year when we snorkeled with them.

Later on we met up with a bunch of friends for a huge Chinese feast at Garden Island Barbecue & Chinese Restaurant in Lihue. It was Auntie Winnie’s birthday but instead of giving her gifts, she gave us all beaded key chains that she made. Man, I was stuffed after eating all that food!

Last night was bitter sweet. I had a great time with all of my friends at Croxley’s but was sad to think about it being the last time I’d see some of them for a long time. It was fun to get together my friends, coworkers, ex-coworkers, and online friends and watch them interact with each other. Thanks everyone, for everything. I will miss you all so much. In September 2001, just after the WTC attacks, I moved to NYC and it stole my heart. I will always have a soft spot there for the city and each of you helped to make it a great place and a great experience for me.

Late into the night after most people had left, Eric, Dave, Jessica and I wandered from Croxley’s to a bar called Manitoba’s.

New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble

Eleanor Playing Violin in the New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble
Eleanor Playing Violin in the New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble, Julia Richman Auditorium, Upper East Side, Manhattan

Today we got a chance to see Eleanor play violin in the New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble, a community-based symphony orchestra. This was the first time I got to hear her play. I felt like a proud mama and instead of a polite golf clap in between songs I wanted to stand up and yell “whoooo! Eleanor!!!!!!!!!” and whistle.. but I restrained myself.

Here’s a video clip of my favorite song that they played. I can’t remember which one it was though!
