This was the 10th year in a row that we have gone to Dallas’s Aunty Gail’s house for Christmas dinner. My parents are visiting from Wisconsin this year and we contemplated not going, but in the end we did and dragged my parents along. I’m glad we did because it is so nice to see all of the family, including many who fly in and we don’t see very often. Of course, everyone made my parents feel right at home and they had a great time.

Last year Makai was just a baby. This year John was the smallest baby. Makai was running around and trying to get right in there with the bigger kids. That was fun to watch. He and his pal Hana are getting to the age when they can finally play together. When they were hugging I almost died. Cuteness!! Also, we keep Makai away from our stairs at home as much as we can, but at Aunty Gail’s tri-level home, there are a lot of stairs and they’re carpeted with VERY plush carpet and Makai would not hold back on going up the stairs. He’s a pro now.

Every year Aunty Gail makes beef tenderloin, mashed potatoes, corn, green bean casserole and her mom’s lettuce/mayo/crab/pea salad. It never varies. Dessert varies because other people always bring different desserts, but Aunty Gail always makes her signature cookies. Someone made brownies, my parents brought a tray of their homemade Christmas candy and Naoko made a delicious yule log.

Every year Aunty Gail reminds you a hundred times to bring your grab bag, “no junk!”. The gift exchange was a little more lively than it had been in the past couple years. Maybe because with my parents and Marty’s new wife, there were a few newbies. I just wanted the bottle of wine, dangit! My gift ended up including a bottle of wine, though, so that was nice.

Doug and Naoko’s Labor Day Party

This is the 8th year, by my count, that we’ve gone to Doug and Naoko’s Labor Day barbecue. Last year they didn’t host a barbecue Naoko was very pregnant and had 3 kids running around. Kind of a lot to try to host a big party too! I was also very pregnant. Doug and Naoko’s daughter, Hana, was born one day before Makai! While the big kids* – Tommy, Kenji, Eddy, Vince, Harmony, and others – were off playing Hana and Makai stayed back and played with each other and with the adults. It was supposed to rain but the weather stayed perfect all day. As always, great food and nice to see everyone!

* It feels weird to say Tommy and Vince and the others are the “big kids” but compared to Makai and Hana, they are! Also, Mitch and Chris were there and they’re both teenagers, so maybe not the “biggest kids.”

Doug & Naoko like to have a Labor Day party every year. Here are some photos from years past:

2005: we played a lot of horseshoes
2006: Jordan brought fresh smoked salmon from Alaska. He’d just been on a trip there.
– 2007: No Party? Or just no photo or post?
2008: Lots of kids. First year I noticed that?
2009: Also celebrated Aunty Gail’s retirement. One more photo from that year.
2010: Doug & Naoko have a new house
2011:Two new babies – Eddy and Ty – and Caroline and Danny expecting one more.
2012: How did the kids get so big?????

Aunty Laura, Heather, Rachelle: We all got the memo to wear maroon sweaters!

On Christmas day we always go to Dallas’s Aunty Gail’s house out in Mount Prospect, IL. This year Danny, Caroline and Rory were in South Carolina and Scotty, Krystyn and Hideto were in Utah. Cory and Chris stayed in Vail where they live and Uncle Sonny and his family didn’t make it because he just had surgery. So, the group was smaller….. but still a lot of people!

Uncle Neil and Aunty Peggy’s family came later after they had dinner with Aunty Peggy’s family so we were actually all able to sit at one table without having side tables or kiddy tables. This is who was sitting across from me:

And we might not have had a kiddy table, but there was a baby section where babies were sleeping during dinner. Or maybe not sleeping, but hopefully being quiet.

Every year Aunty Gail reminds you a hundred times to bring your grab bag, “no junk!”. This year the gifts all seemed to be decent and the swap did not get too crazy. Almost everyone just took a gift from the middle without much stealing. I’m not sure why. Maybe it was because the family had FOUR new babies to distract them!

Alexia was reaching out to touch Makai and Makai was tipping over on his own, but it totally looks like she is pushing him down!

There was Makai, of course. Austin was born in February, Alexia was born in July and Hanako was born one day before Makai in October! The family was shocked to add not one, but TWO girls. As you can see from this cousins photo, there are a LOT of boys. Poor Kate has been the only girl for AGES.

Makai was such a good boy. He has a very calm demeanor even where there was so much going on. Aunty Laura was holding him and Hana at the same time and Hana was so upset. .. and Makai just sat there. “Whatever.. I’m chillin’!”.

There was one time that I put him in a crib upstairs that Aunty Gail has and then I sat down to eat. I heard crying and it took me a minute to register, “Oh, that’s MY kid.” Another time I passed him off to Aunty Laura to eat a slice of delicious cake that Naoko made. I got to talking with people and a while later realized that Aunty Laura STILL had him. Not only that, she’d rocked him to sleep and was still holding him! I need to work on that. I promise, I don’t forget I have a baby when I’m at home! I guess it is good to forget once in a while.

Overall, great family dinner. Nice to see everyone, even if I only had brief conversations with a few. Until next year!

Note: In the hustle and bustle of getting everything together for Makai and for the gift exchange and some things we were storing at Aunty Laura’s, I somehow forgot my camera! Luckily, Heather and Naoko are more seasoned moms than me and remembered their cameras. I must thank them for a bunch of these photos! The other photos are from my iPhone, as you can tell by the poor quality in the low lighting!
