Alpana Singh invited Chuck and I to a wine event last night. I asked Erin to come as my “plus one” because I thought she’d enjoy the wine and meeting Alpana. Also, I don’t believe we got invited to as many events back when she was the Chicagoist Food Editor. Anyway, last night was really fun. I’d never been to Scoozi! before and enjoyed the appetizers they served (prosciutto and arugula pizza, yum!). And of course, the wine was good. I really enjoyed the Masi Masianco Pinot Grigio and the Marco Carpineti Tufaliccio Rosso.

I’d heard it was so, but was still pleased to learn that Alpana was really down to earth and nice and talkative. We spoke for quite a while and our conversation ranged from wine to booze to the CTA to dermatologists and gynecologists to working out and yoga. And probably 10 more things I can’t remember now. We also met Alpana’s husband, Charles Blackstone. After coming home and looking up his website, I realized that Charles and I had emailed back when his book was first released and I wrote a post about it.

The event was also a singles mixer and Jason Steele spoke briefly about dating. None of us were really there to hook up, we were there for the wine, but when talking about how she thought more men should attend wine tastings, at one point Alpana said “If you can’t get laid at a wine tasting, then you can’t get laid.” I thought it kind of was representative of how she is obviously really very intelligent about wine* but at the same time she believes in making wine fun and casual and bringing it down to the level of the everyman. Which is way cool. Wine doesn’t have to be snooty and obscure and I don’t think it is and I don’t think Alpana thinks it is. We had fun and I’m glad we met. She’s totally someone I could hang out in the bar and drink with.

* Alpana passed the Court of Master Sommeliers’ advanced certification test at age 21 to become the youngest person to ever achieve the rank of Master Sommelier… and the master sommelier exam only has a 3% pass rate.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from Chicagoist’s Ctrl-Alt-Rock event on Thursday night. I think it was even more of a success than last year. We had 4 bands play and I negotiated a deal with Goose Island to get a few kegs of 312 Urban Wheat donated. Double Door agreed to sell the 312 for $3/cup and I put up a $300 tab so all of the 312 beer was either free or only $3. The bands were really great and probably about 300 – 400 (??) people came out even though it was only about 3 degrees outside. It was a fun time!

More recap here and more photos here and here.

We took the Chicagoist staff out on Friday night to Zapatista for a big, year-end, pat-on-the-back celebration. It’s great how everyone gets along so well. We all had an awesome time. The food at Zapatista was excellent (Chuck did a review here) and there was no shortage of sangria. Big thanks to Chuck for taking the lead and setting everything up. It made it easy so that all I had to do was show up with my credit card and have a good time.

On Thursday night most of the Chicagoist staff met up at Piece for pizza and beers. Except I somehow managed to stick to salad and diet soda (whoo hoo for my diet!). It’s always fun to get everyone together and remind each other that we’re real people behind all the emails and forum posts and site posts. We also got to meet 6 of the 8 newest contributors, which was really cool.

The Birthday Boy :: Pontiac, Wicker Park, Chicago

Last night a bunch of us from Chicagoist met up for happy hour at Pontiac. It was time for our monthly get-together, plus Tankboy was having his birthday party at Pontiac.

Scott had issue with the way “bootie” was spelled on the menu. James, can we get a ruling here? After I ordered it and Margaret and Erin had a taste, they said they really enjoyed my Juicy Bootie.

When Chicagoist has and event we’re always happy to get a band lined up and some drink specials.. but Tankboy.. he’s a badass mofo. He shows up to his own party late, has $3 Bud Lights and $3 Makers Mark for everyone there, and gets 3 bands to play.

I was getting tired and thinking about going to work in the morning because I’m getting old and not fun, so I left at 10:30 before any bands had even started yet. Still, it was fun to see everyone. Also, TB, just so you know, all the girls were talking about how jealous we are of your lucious goldilocks.
