On Saturday I hosted a cookie party. My mom, sister-in-law, cousin, nieces, Dallas’ aunts, and some of my girlfriends all came over. Each brought several dozen cookies, which we laid out and sampled over the course of a few hours.

I served some baba ganoush (Dallas and I love the Whole Foods brand of it and surprisingly, so did my niece Stephanie who’d never had baba ganoush before), sun-dried tomato hummus, veggies, crackers, pretzels and cheeses to try to counter-balance the sweets. We all, especially my niece Jess, enjoyed spiced cider (spiked or not) that my mom helped make from a Chicagoist recipe.

We passed the time talking and eating and listening to holiday music and trimming the tree and watching Frosty the Snowman/Frosty Returns on TV. After a couple hours of sampling all the cookies and candies, we each voted on the one we liked best.

I didn’t take too many photos, and the ones I did weren’t of the people at the party.. I need to get better at that sometimes.. but Erin has some photos of friends who attended.

More Cookies!

Between this party and my company holiday party, I’m getting into the spirit now. I think my cookie party was a success. Everyone said they had a great time, so I’ll probably try to do it again next year, with a few modifications. Namely, you MUST take home as many cookies as you bring. I have about 500 cookies in my kitchen right now because everyone was being all polite about not taking too much home. Also, I think each person should just make one thing. There were several of us who made more than one candy or cookie and it did turn out to be a bit overwhelming to try to sample everything.

Note: In 2010 I finally got around to updating this post with some of Erin’s photos from the party. She had more photos of the people who attended.

On the eve of Christmas Eve we went to dinner at Dallas’ Aunt Laura’s house. Danny and Cory were there, too, as well as their doggies, Maggie and Zoe. Laura’s actual grandson, Hideto, hadn’t arrived yet from California, so the pooches got a lot of spoiling. Including new doggie beds by the fireplace at grandma’s house, a new dog bed for Maggie to bring home and a new shearling jacket for Zoe.

For dinner we had Aunt Laura’s special flank steak and some pork wontons. Dallas’ family’s dinners are always a mix of Asian and American cultures, so we also had edamame, kimchi, tofu, rice and deviled eggs.

After dinner we trimmed the tree, which was in such dire shape that I later learned that Danny and Laura went out the next day and bought a new one and started over. Still fun. We opened a few gifts also and then had coffee and tea and dessert.

A nice way to kick off the holiday weekend.

** Does anyone know what would be causing my camera to sometimes take photos like the one of Corie trimming the tree? I’ve also been having memory card errors where it will just show up as “corrupted data” instead of the photos.

We spent Christmas Eve with my family at my brother’s house in Oak Creek, WI. Although my niece, Jessica, had spent time with Dallas a few times, she was super shy. She wouldn’t talk to anyone when he came over and just kept looking out of the corner of her eye to see if he was still there in the room. Amanda said she was the same way with her uncle who was visiting the day before. And I can remember when Jess was little she wouldn’t let any man hold her except my brother. Even if my dad or her other grandpa looked at her she’d start crying sometimes. She warmed up by the time we left, but still didn’t really willingly go by Dallas. Who would? ha

Jess was so tired on Christmas Eve night. I went in her room about an hour after she went to bed and she was laying there sleeping with her new Peanuts character stuffed animals and her Peanuts book still in her hands. Steph kept checking to see where Santa was on NoradSanta.org. When he got close she went to bed too.
