Yesterday I was lucky enough to attend a secret Death Cab for Cutie Sound Opinions show on behalf of Chicagoist and Live Music Blog. I’m kind of a passive Death Cab fan. I have a lot of their albums and I enjoy them, but I’ve never gone to a show or gushed over Ben Gibbard or any of those uber fan moves. I do love that Postal Service album, though, so maybe I’m just more of a Ben Gibbard fan, since that’s his side project. Also, I really enjoy Sound Opinions, but I’m constantly behind on their podcast.
In any case, I really enjoyed the show today. It was neat to see Death Cab perform in such a small intimate setting (the Claudia Cassidy Theater only seats 200 and some people), especially since they’re playing at the Pritzker Pavilion in the begining of June and it sold out in like 5 seconds. The band sounded fantastic. It was also neat to hear them chit chat with Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot. On top of all that, I knew some people at Chicago Public Radio, where Sound Opinions airs, and they recognized me from Chicagoist, knew I was a photographer, and gave me one of two reserved press photographer seats in the front row.
Thanks to Josh Andrews and Cindy Hansen for totally hooking me up with the seats and to Justin who reached out invite me in the first place. Well, actually Justin invited Jess who invited me, but whatever! I wonder if Justin’s moving to San Francisco will continue to pay out for those of us still here in Chicago!
