Nathan Hale @ Tribune Tower

Nathan Hale Statue, Magnificent Mile, Chicago

I will embarassingly admit that I couldn’t remember exactly who Nathan Hale was when I took this photo. When I got home I looked him up in Wikipedia and realized he was a captain in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War and is considered to be America’s first spy. Hale volunteered for an intelligence-gathering mission and was caught. When he wouldn’t tell the British anything they hanged him. Right before he was killed he gave a speech that included this famous quote: “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” So now I remember… and hopefully won’t forget.

Hale’s statue is located in front of what is the original entrance to the Tribune Tower. Read more on the history of Tribune Tower and the Nathan Hale statue there.

Not to be all 6th-grade humor, but doesn’t it look like he peed his pants? Someone should fix that!

I Clip Coupons

Last week a reporter from the Chicago Tribune called to talk to me about an article she was writing on coupon clipping. She contacted me via email initially when she saw this post on my website. Anyway, I thought that the story would be buried in the food or the money section or something.

On Sunday we were at Dallas’ cousin’s house and he was rifling through the paper and couldn’t find the article.. til he stopped and looked at the FIRST PAGE! Eep! And could I sound any more like a spinster!?

Golden Mashed Potatoes

December 9th, 2004 · 5 Comments

After yesterday, I thought I’d post something a little less. .. uh.. disgusting!

On Sunday I was browsing the Trib and came across this recipe by Abby Mandel for Golden Mashed Potatoes. I wasn’t really doing anything that day so I went to the supermarket and bought the ingredients to make them. The recipe at first, reminded me of something that Kelly said Jeff sometimes makes.. with turnips/rutabaga mixed with mashed potatoes. Some notes, and then the recipe is after the jump:

» A medium/large rutabaga is more likely to be 2 1/2 pounds than the 1 1/4 pounds required in the recipe

» The rutabaga had about a 1/4 inch of wax on it which got wax all over the cutting board and probably in the food too

» Day-am! A rutabaga is freaking hard to cut up! Especially with my high-quality Ikea knives (hint, hint – they’re shit!).

» The result is somewhat bland. Not sure what to add to make the taste more interesting.

» I put a bowl of pyrex mashed potatoes on the stovetop with the burner on to keep them warm until my brother and his friend got back from the Bears game. Then I realized they were burning on the bottom so I took the potatoes out of the bowl and put the pyrex bowl in the sink. Since there was burned potatoes in it, I knew it’d be hard to clean so I turned the water on to soak the burned food. Instantly the bowl shattered into 100 pieces. Dumb move on my part.

Starbucks Needs to Get On This!

Coffee

I’ve started getting the Chicago Tribune on Sundays and have secretly become an obsessive coupon clipper. There’s something oddly satisfying about cutting them out and thinking “FREE MONEY!” even if you wind up never using them. Anwyay, one coupon that I did use this morning was for free coffee or cappuccino at White Hen. So, score on that.. but what I liked even better was this nifty gadget on the White Hen coffee covers that help you avoid spills. So cool.

The trees on Michigan and around the downtown/loop area have little white lights on them for the upcoming holidays.

Several people were gathered watching the painter in the window. Most people moved on and I stayed and took a few photographs. The man in the orange shirt in the background saw me and said something to the painter who turned around and waved to me with his paintbrush. Caught off guard, I gave an embarrassed wave and hurried along.

At Millennium Park the Ice Rink is ready but not open yet. Cloud Gate is hard to photograph in the dark. I think I need to bring my tripod.
