Doug & Naoko’s Labor Day Party

September 4th, 2011 · No Comments

Yesterday we went to Doug & Naoko’s annual Labor Day barbecue. Dallas and I hadn’t seen the Chicago suburbs family since New Years Day! Actually, Aunty Gail was at our wedding, but everyone else… it had been a long time. I don’t know how 8 months flew by, but it was good to see everyone.

Heather & Tyler, Rachelle & Eddy

It was not so long ago that Heather’s kids were the youngest in the family. SO not the case these days. Her oldest Chris is the same age as my niece Stephanie: 15. Her younger boy Mitch is 12 (I think?). I remember saying something to Chris about “when you were 9 blah blah blah.” Then thinking “9? no way!” But it’s true. I have known those kids, this family, for more than 7 years now.

At the barbecue, I met the two newest members of the family. Tyler is Brad and Amanda’s baby and is one month old. Eddy is Doug and Naoko’s youngest and is 8 months old.

Aunty Glenna, Cory, Caroline, Naoko, Rachelle, Aunty Laura, Amanda, Heather

Many of the ladies of the family. Aunty Glenna is celebrating her 30th wedding anniversary with Uncle BB today and is a brand new grandmother. Cory is moving to Vail in a month or two. Her husband Chris is already there. Caroline is pregnant and due February 10th. Naoko has 3 sons – Tommy is 5, Kenji is 2, and Eddy is 8 months. Me, newlywed. Aunty Laura is expecting her second grandchild in February. Everyone thinks it will be a boy. All of the kids of that generation are boys (except 1? Kate?) Amanda just had baby Tyler a month ago. Heather likes to hold babies (holding baby Tyler in this photo).

Sal, Brad, Danny

A bunch of the guys golfed all day. Aunty Gail was with them too. I heard she was the best golfer of the bunch. Probably the most sober too. Coincidence? After golfing I found a bunch of the guys standing around by the grills. Typical. Danny will forever be the designated grill chief now. They know he worked in a vegetarian restaurant, right?

Caroline, Aunty Laura, Aunty Glenna, Cory, Heather, Tyler, Amanda (hiding behind flowers), Aly, Aly’s boyfriend, Naoko manning the stove

From the grill area I took this spy cam photo of the kitchen. I think only Aly saw me!

In the living room Ghostbusters was on. I thought this was a perfectly innocent movie, but the kids started getting all riled up saying there were ghosts in the basement and running after each other acting like ghosts. Some parents were worried their kids were going to have nightmares. A while later the TV was switched to college football.

Another shot of the living room. I can count about 10 kids in this photo. There were even more at the party. See what I’m saying about Mitch and Chris not being the kids any more? In this photo of my first Labor Day BBQ at Doug & Naoko’s there are 3 kids. Joey and Marietta’s two girls and baby Vince (Matt & Jen). If you add on Chris and Mitch, that’s 5. That number has at least tripled, I think. Well, and it’s not all family. Doug and Naoko’s friends have a lot of kids now too.

Even though there were 8 kids on the couch, Dallas and Sal still caught some ZZZZs. Not when Charlotte (Sal & Kim’s) took a liking to Dallas though. She’s the girl laying down on the right side of the photo with the navy and striped dress on. I was sitting out in the screen porch and every time I looked into the living room she was climbing on his shoulders, putting a stuff animal on his head, sticking her fingers in his face, etc. Once she was even giving him a back massage. Who’s this girl?!?! hhaha. Dallas said that Charlotte was calling him Uncle Joey for a while. Because he looks so much like Joey, a tall white blonde. See the 5th photo down, here. When Kim told her to tell Dallas goodbye as they were leaving she said “Bye, Alice!” So funny.

All in all another great barbecue. Noako put out some delicious food, as always! Great to see everyone again.

Doug & Naoko like to have a Labor Day party every year. Here are some photos from years past:

- 2005: we played a lot of horseshoes
- 2006: Jordan brought fresh smoked salmon from Alaska. He’d just been on a trip there.
- 2007: No Party? Or just no photo or post?
- 2008: Lots of kids. First year I noticed that?
- 2009: Also celebrated Aunty Gail’s retirement. One more photo from that year.
- 2010: Doug & Naoko have a new house

Visiting Cousins

August 16th, 2010 · No Comments

This weekend my cousin Kelly and her family visited Chicago and stayed overnight at our place. Dallas was in Vancouver for work, but my parents and my nieces also stayed over, so it was a full house. My brother and Amanda also visited for the day Saturday. Kind of crazy. Kelly’s kids are 4 years old, 2 years old and 11 months old. My nieces are 8 years old and 14 years old. Like I said, crazy!

Tessa is the 4-year-old. She is getting to be such a big girl who can help you out with things and play on her own. I can’t even believe she’s so grown up already. Seems like not so long ago, Kelly and Jeff lived in Virginia and I flew out when Tessa was born. But, I guess when I think about it, a lot has happened since then.

Tessa has a great personality. Very outgoing and fun. She and my niece Jessica are good buddies, even though Jess is 3 years older. They ran around and played so much this weekend. Both at Haas Park and around the house. Here in a rare moment, sitting still. Let’s put these girls to work!

Like I said, Tessa is a good helper. And so is Jessica. Tessa likes you to tell her she’s a good helper and is proud. I think Jess is a little over it and can’t be fooled so easily, but she is a good girl so she chips in too. They are both well-behaved and were excited to go outside and help me water plants on the patio and roof deck.

The watering pitcher was a bit heavy, but once I emptied a lot of it on some taller plants, Tessa was happy to help with the lower plants. We played a lot of games this weekend and it was fun to see Tessa. It is also nice to see how much fun she and Jess have when they get together, even if it’s not as often as everyone would like. They bounce right back into it like no time was lost!

Tess and Jess (rhymes!) were running around so much, that I didn’t get good portraits of them like I did of Tessa’s sisters. For a while on Sunday morning they were just chilling out on the couch.

Charlotte is 2 years old. She loves her Dora! Actually, she loves Boots. I am still getting to know Charlotte. She is very much attached to Kelly and Jeff, so I haven’t gotten to interact with her as much as Tessa and Margo. I did learn that Charlotte loves water.

At the park Charlotte was the first to run into the sprinklers and get wet and probably the one who stayed in the water the most. Char was also outside while we were watering and was not shy about getting her feet rinsed off and taking drinks from the hose. And then there was the bath! Charlotte, Jessica and Tessa took a bath in my big jacuzzi tub and had a blast. Jets and bubbles and plastic bowls. Lots of splashing. Charlotte was sticking her head under the faucet and taking drinks from it. So funny. I think when she was in the water was when she was happiest this weekend! She is going to be a great swimmer.

Unfortunately, Charlotte was not feeling well on Saturday. And she is 2 (enough said), so she looked at me like this a lot. Angry eyebrows! I know she will grow out of it, though. I look forward to seeing her next time! I hope she feels better!

Finally, Margo. The baby. She is not even 1 year old yet.

Margo is a good baby. She does not cry too much and, right now at least, she is not too shy about other people holding her and giving her bottles and stuff like that.

She is standing up and learning to take steps right now. She is not hesitant about trying to go for what she wants. Margo will be running around in no time!

I missed out on photographing Superman, but here’s a photo of Wonder Woman: Kelly!

Actually, I didn’t take this photo but found it on my camera. I don’t know who took it, but I’m going to guess it was my mom. I don’t know if Kelly will like this photo of her relaxing with Charlotte on Saturday night, but I think it’s a great, honest photo of a good, strong mom. Plus, what a cute summer haircut! I don’t know how she keeps it together on a day-to-day basis with 3 kids aged 4 and under! Jeff too. I think at this point they must just be playing defense because there are more kids than adults. I don’t think I could do it, so I am in awe that they are still at least somewhat sane. And, I can totally get how Kevin accidentally got left home alone now!

Everyone (9 people) left my house at about the same time on Sunday and I didn’t even know what to do with myself. The previous 24 hours had been non-stop action and the silence was deafening! It whirlwind visit, but so great to see everyone. We don’t get to see each other nearly enough, so I always look forward to our visits. Looking forward to our next already!

Kelly & Jeff’s Holiday Party

January 3rd, 2010 · No Comments

On the second day of the year 2010, we went up to De Pere (near Green Bay), WI for my cousin Kelly and her husband Jeff’s holiday party. I’d only been to their house one time before and Dallas had never been there so we were long overdue!

Kelly & Jeff

My parents, my brother’s family, Kelly’s mom my Aunt Sue, my other cousin Kelly and her daughter Katie, and my cousin Sara’s family all came over. Jeff made a big pot of chili and cornbread and Sara brought cornbread muffins as well. There were lots of dips and sweets to round the meal out. ha. Here’s a photo of my brother and sister-in-law since apparently I didn’t mention them at all the last time I saw them and it cannot be implied that they were present without proof. haha.

Richard & Amanda

Steph got a guitar for Christmas so she was practicing with a book. My Aunt Sue was also showing her how to do some things.

Stephanie

Margo is only about 3 months old.

Kelly, Katie, Margo, Mom

I tried to take a photo of Jessica and Tessa, but it is hard.

Tessa, Jessica

This always happens:

Tessa, Jessica

Bribed to hold still.

Charlotte happily posed for a photo.

Charlotte

There was a fierce white elephant gift exchange. My dad got the first pick and opened something nobody wanted. It’s this annoying Packers toy dinosaur that dances and has blinking lights and plays the most annoying song on earth. This has been circling through our family for a while now.

Dad

Dallas got the Bodyguard soundtrack on cassette. Luckily Unfortunately, our car has a tape deck and we had a 3 hour ride home.

Dallas

Tessa really wanted to keep a hold of these granola bars in the swap. She may have cried the first time they got stolen away. I can’t remember who ended up with them. It was either Tessa or Sara.

Tessa

After the gift exchange, we played a lot with the kids. Here’s my cousin Sara’s husband Cam and one of their twins, Fiona, I think :) .

Fiona, Cam

Intense round of the fish game, except in the princess edition I think they catch jewels.

Jeff, Charlotte, Elise, Fiona

Fiona

Fun day. Wish we could have stayed longer, but we had a long drive home. Luckily there was no traffic and the roads were clear. Can’t wait for next year’s swap. We have some junk lovely gifts to give away!

Family Visit to Chicago

August 24th, 2009 · 1 Comment

This past weekend we had a bunch of my family down from Wisconsin for a visit to Chicago. My cousin Kelly, Jeff, Tessa and Charlotte came on Friday night and stayed over til Saturday. My parents and my Aunt Sue arrived on Saturday and stayed over til Sunday. My brother Richard, Amanda, Jessica, and Stephanie came down for the day on Saturday. We hung around on the roof deck, played bags, had a barbecue, and went to Palmer Square park. After a lot of people left, my dad and I played Mario Karts on the Wii and my mom and I and Dallas played Tetris on the Wii. Sunday morning my parents and my aunt and I went to brunch at Dunlay’s on the Square and then walked through the Logan Square Farmers Market. It was fun to have everyone down for a visit!

These photos are from Palmer Square. Except the last one of Charlotte, who didn’t go to the park. She wasn’t feeling well on Saturday but we did manage to get a few smiles out of her.

Mom, Dad. Think dad is giving the finger on purpose. Kelly was trying to pose them & make them kiss. Not sure why.

Riley @ Target

December 14th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Nancy emailed me about a month ago to say that a photograph that Riley modeled for made it into a Target sales flier. I was going to pass it on to people who know Nancy and Riley or post about it here, but I didn’t have time. The following Sunday, Kelly called and left me a voice mail. She was at Target around De Pere or Green Bay with Charlotte and she swore that this girl in a display there looked like Riley. She thought she was going crazy. Nancy never told me she’d be on in-store displays, but if I had to guess I’d say it was her!
