Fish Bar :: Lakeview, Chicago

Fish Bar :: Lakeview, Chicago

Condiments

All drinks are in jars

Calamari – “Federal Hill” style

Tuna Salad/Avocado – Celery, capers, etc.

Tater Tots with crack in them to make you want to eat more and more.

Oyster Po’Boy – Remoulade, spicy slaw. Favorite!

Scallops were on special. It was fall. I think that might be some kind of squash sauce.

Eastern Belly Clams – Tarter sauce.

Sara somehow had a bunch of free oyster shooter vouchers. Couldn’t let those go to waste!

Mindy Segal’s Key Lime Pie

A couple months ago Sara and Jessica introduced me to Fish Bar, a place where Sara is a bonafied regular. And. I loved it! It’s this tiny little place and the inside reminds me of something I’ve seen on The Cape. Or somewhere in Boston. Some old place that’s been there for a million years serving fresh seafood. And not fancying it up. Just serving it simple, how it should be. I know they’re doing this on purpose, manufacturing this look on the inside, but I didn’t care. I loved it. Maybe that is just a hint that I’m due for an East Coast visit, but I was all for it. Not to mention that the food was fantastic. I especially loved the fried oyster po’boy. Jess, Sara and I split everything, so I only had a third of it, but I swear, I could have eaten two full ones. It was so delicious. Also, where else in Chicago can you get clam strips WITH the bellies? Nowhere, I think. This is something I really only associate with Mass. and there it was on the menu! The desserts are done by Mindy Segal, so you know they’re good. They change regularly, according to Sara, the regular. We tried a slice of key lime pie. Not totally “my thing” but very tasty. Can’t wait to go back to Fish Bar… at least until my next trip to the East Coast!

That Old Cape Magic by Richard Russo

June 4th, 2011 · No Comments

finished 06.03.11

I’ve been a fan of Richard Russo’s for many years. I loved his books Empire Falls and Nobody’s Fool and I attended his interview at the library when he was in town promoting his newest book, That Old Cape Magic. Well, I finally got that book and read it. I liked it. Not as much as the other two I mentioned, but it was good. Probably helps that I’ve visited The Cape a few times and am friends with people who grew up vacationing there.

$36 Well Spent at the Lincoln Square Farmers’ Market

July 20th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Lincoln Square Farmers’ Market, Lincoln Square, Chicago

Lincoln Square Farmers’ Market, Lincoln Square, Chicago

Farmers’ Market Produce, Roscoe Village, Chicago

Back in Chicago means back at the Tuesday Lincoln Square farmers’ market. For $36 I brought home:

- 3 large portabello tops
- small portabellos
- raspberries
- blueberries
- cherries
- 2 sage plants
- green onions
- two types of zucchini
- yellow squash
- grape tomatoes (various colors)
- green pepper
- 5 ears of corn
- lettuce
- 1 free energy saver light bulb from the 47th Ward alderman Gene Schulter

Everything is so much better when you get it fresh from the regional farmers instead of shipped from who knows where at the supermarket. The berries were unbelievable. So flavorful. And the lettuce was so big and tasty. And the corn! So sweet and delicate.

I don’t think I wrote about this before, but I’ve spoken about it to a few people. I really like the guy in the mushroom stand. I’ve talked to him a lot about the different kinds of mushrooms he has. One day we talked about how portobello’s, the large ones, were actually a mistake. They were the little crimini mushrooms that were let go another 2 or 3 days and grew big, what we now know as portobellos. Then portobellos got to be so popular that they now refer to criminis as baby portobellos and sometimes charge more for them. This last time I was at the market the mushroom stand was crazy. Instead of the one guy there were 2-3 more people working the stand and giving out samples and stuff. They also sell a lot of canned mushroom dips, salsas and sauces that they give out free samples of. The mushrooms are grown in a greenhouse in Wisconsin.

I also went to Jewel later on to get a few more things so I could make this corn/avocado/tomato salad. We actually made this salad a lot when I was in Cape Cod and used the basil that Jessica’s uncle gave us. I don’t really have a specific recipe for the salad, but this is what’s in it. I just added enough of each til it looked good.

- 1 avocado
- 2 cobs of corn, cook & cut off the cob
- about a cup of tomato
- basil
- splash of olive oil
- salt
- pepper
- juice of one lemon

I’d gotten the corn and tomatoes at the farmers’ market and I grew the basil on my patio.

Final Cape Cod Photos

July 18th, 2008 · No Comments

A few more random photos I have from our Cape Cod vacation.

This was our rental house in South Yarmouth. It had two bedrooms with queen-sized beds, one bedroom with bunk beds and a loft with two twin beds. There was a bathroom with a jacuzzi tub, living room and full kitchen. The screened-in porch had a dining room table with seating for six and some wicker furniture for a separate seating area. Outside there was also a table and chairs for eating. The backyard was fenced in and had a hammock, fire pit, clothes line, grill, and outdoor shower. Oh, and there was central air, a flat-screen tv, and lots of games. Basically, there was nothing that we could think of that we wished we’d had.

This spurred a lot of conversation about how to pronounce h-a-m-m-o-c-k.

Walking home from the beach each day we’d call dibs on who got to use the outside shower. It was pretty awesome. I can honestly say that this was the only time I felt the need to wear sunglasses while showering.

This piece of “art” was in my bedroom but I had to move it because I constantly had the Phil Collins song in my head.

We went to this liquor store almost every day. The employees were really nice there.

One general beach observation: Sunscreen lotion is a thing of the past. Everyone is using the sprays these days.

Lil’ Caboose Ice Cream

July 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Lil’ Caboose Ice Cream, South Yarmouth, Cape Cod

Kream ‘n Kone is also well known for their ice cream. We had dinner there and afterwards were so stuffed we couldn’t get ice cream. I don’t know why we thought that if we drove down the road for 5 minutes to South Yarmouth then we’d be hungry for ice cream. We went to Lil’ Caboose, a place that Jess used to go to growing up. This is the smallest sized ice cream I could get. It’s one scoop of lobster tracks (like moose tracks but with lobster-colored chips in it) and one scoop of some sort of triple chocolate. I ate maybe a third of this. SO stuffed.

After ice cream we went home to clean up our rental house. I was up til all hours doing laundry. The next morning we stopped over at Jess’s grandpa’s house to say goodbye and then drove back to New Jersey. Vacation over. Wah!
