Hawaii 2009: I dropped my Canon A95 and it was the last straw for my beloved point and shoot. I was taking a photo of this bike rack in Waikiki when the fatal blow came. I’d had that camera since 2005, so four years wasn’t a bad run.
Well, I wasn’t really speedy about replacing the A95 and finally in the spring of 2010, I got a the Canon Powershot SD 1200 IS. It was a good little camera, but I missed all of my manual controls that I have on my DSLR and that were even on my Canon A95. I wanted badly to upgrade to the Canon PowerShot S95
, which was a compact point and shoot and had all manual controls.
At Tien and Shannan’s wedding, my friend Adam had the S95 and after playing with it, I was completely sold. The only problem? Price. It wasn’t exactly the cheapest camera, and we were on a wedding budget. Dallas kept telling me to just get it, but I wasn’t allowing myself. Then Ed called me and asked me for a recommendation on an inexpensive, easy-to-use point and shoot camera. My SD 1200 was only about 8 months old and in perfect condition. If I could sell it, I could put the money towards the S95. Ed agreed, and even though I didn’t sell it for too much, the fact that I was letting it go, and the fact that our Hawaiian vacation and wedding was coming up, was enough to push me. I finally decided to go and get the S95. New problem? Manufacturer backorder! No one had it in stock.
I spent a weekend looking everywhere online and calling around to stores in Chicago. When I called the Microcenter, they said they had two in stock. I gave them my name, told them I’d be there in 10 minutes, and rushed out the door. Bingo!
I love this camera. It’s small and compact, but very powerful. I never even took my DSLR out of its case on our trip to Hawaii. Love, love, love. If you’ve got a bit more money to spend on a point and shoot, I’d recommend the Canon S95 to you, without a doubt! I’m about to start posting photos from our trip to Hawaii.. All of them were taken with the Canon S95, with the exception of a few iPhone photos.
