A Wisconsin Barbecue and Family Reunion

August 15th, 2013 · 3 Comments

Dallas and I, along with my brother and his family, headed up to my parent’s house in Greenville for the weekend. While we were all visiting, my parents invited all of our relatives over for a huge barbecue. I hadn’t seen a lot of people for years and surprisingly, many of them hadn’t seen each other for as long, as well. Six of my mom’s seven siblings were able to attend, as well as a ton of my cousins, cousin’s kids and a good amount of family on my dad’s side, too.

All of my cousin’s kids had a great time playing in the little stream/ditch in the way back yard. This is my Aunt Deb, Cousin Amanda, and Niece Jessica with Noah, Oliver, Ella, Brianna, Elise and Fiona.

There were a bunch of frogs in there and the kids were going crazy catching them!! These were all of my cousin’s kids: Sierra, Brianna, Elise, Noah, Brianna (there are 2! Actually, 3 if you count Brianne, who wasn’t there.), Ella, Collin, Fiona, Keegan, Oliver.

Dallas was joking that you know you’re in Wisconsin when you see this many crock pots lined up! Also when you designate which sausage is “skinless”?

Keegan and his brother Collin are my cousin Anna’s boys. They’re twins, and so are my cousin Sara’s daughters, Fiona and Elise. Keegan and Dallas played this washer toss game many times and Keegan won most games. The 10 beers Dallas had by that point kind of leveled the playing field!

I was pretty sore from the long drive two days in a row, but it was totally worth it to see everyone. Hopefully we can do it again next summer and it won’t be YEARS before everyone sees each other again!

Mojitos, Turkey Burgers, Smores

After a long day at the beach we decided to make dinner on the grill. Well, first Julie made us mojitos with the fresh mint that Jess’s uncle gave us. Fresh herbs also went into the turkey burgers, which btw, were delicious. Later on we started a fire in the stove/pit thing. Steph was having problems until I realized that she didn’t have any kindling, so I searched around the yard and found some sticks and we got it going. We sat around drinking wine and making smores for a couple hours. I think we smoked the neighbors out, but it was fun.

Finally got to check out the Bong Recreation Area, instead of just laughing at the sign every time we drive past it on the highway. Danny, Lori, Dallas and I went camping there this weekend. It was nice to get away from the computer and the City and TV and all the regular stuff and just unplug for a while.

My brother lives only about a half hour from where we were camping so they came by for a couple hours on Saturday. We checked out the beach at the lake and then had cooked some brats on sticks* for lunch. It was kind of hard. I think that each brat hit the ground and was rinsed about 3 times, but that’s part of camping. You’ve got to expect to eat some dirt. Late on Danny & Dallas golfed 9 holes nearby and Lori and I took Maggie on a 2 mile hike.

Overall, it was a good time. Fun. Relaxing. The only bad part was Saturday night when it started sprinkling in the middle of the night.. and then pouring. The entire place was turned to mud. We left right away in the morning on Sunday and got breakfast at Perkins in Kenosha.

* Brats on sticks was the only meal that didn’t really turn out and it was kind of my fault. I had a little camping grill that I was going to bring along. I used to use for regular grilling all the time. I haven’t really used it much since Dallas moved here 1) because he thinks it’s stupid and 2) he and Kristin have a full-sized grill we use instead. I went to pull my mini grill out the night before camping and it was full of webs and pillbugs. Disgusting. I threw it in the trash. Otherwise, in true Danny fashion, we had wonderful meals. Red beans and rice with kielbasa, corned beef hash with eggs, beef & vegetable soup, grilled corn on the cob, and smores. Lots of smores!
