This weekend my mom drove down from Wisconsin and cashed in on her birthday and Christmas gifts. For her birthday gift we went out for dinner and then to see Jersey Boys at the Bank of America Theatre.

Wild Striped Sea Bass :: Rhapsody, The Loop, Chicago
Dallas suggested dinner at Rhapsody because it was nearby the theater and he’d been there before for lunch and liked the food. I thought the food was good, but we were kind of wedged into a table with people really close to us on each side. The service was just ok.. and compared to other fine dining restaurants that are still kind of fun and casual, Rhapsody felt a bit stuffy. Lots of suits in there. Still, we had a good dinner.
For a starter we split a daily special of seared scallops. I haven’t had scallops in a really long time and these were really good. The portion was a bit small. I think the dish was $10 and you only got 2 scallops. For wine we split a half bottle of Matanzas Creek Sauvignon Blanc. It was nice and crisp and refreshing. For an entree mom got the pork tenderloin that was cooked with apples. I got a wild striped bass (above). Surprisingly, after our starter, the entrees were pretty good sized. We each enjoyed what we ordered. We also split a side of first of the season peas with mint, almonds and preserved lemon. They were so fresh and flavorful. I spotted a dessert next to us that I thought looked interesting, so we ordered it to finish off our dinner. It was called chocolate symphony. You got four different small desserts, maybe a bite or two for each of us, which was just the right amount. The four desserts were warm chocolate lava cake, chocolate peanut candy bar, chocolate chip pain perdu, and cookies & cream lollipop.

Rachelle & Mom :: Bank of America Theatre, The Loop, Chicago
After dinner we walked a couple blocks over to the Bank of America Theatre to see Jersey Boys. I Tried to get my mom tickets to see the show for her last birthday but they were all sold out. Jersey Boys was worth the wait, though. I was surprised that I knew or recognized most of the songs even though they are 40+ years old. I thought it was interesting to see the timeline of the Four Seasons and how the personal lives of the band reflected on the music. The cast was really talented. The recession was showing at the theater. Half the seats on our level were empty. I’d recommend this show, especially if you’re looking for something to take your parents or grandparents to .. people who would remember the songs the first time around. The theater could probably use your money too.
The next day my mom cashed in on her Christmas gift: Brunch and manicures and pedicures.

Chocolate Tower French Toast :: Bongo Room, Wicker Park, Chicago
I took my dad to Bongo Room once a few years ago and he still talks about it, so I thought my mom would like to see what all the fuss was about. Plus, I made our spa appointment at a place right next to Bongo Room. Mom and I decided to split two things, one savory and one sweet, so we got the sweet potato and black bean breakfast burrito and the chocolate tower french toast. Both were very good. We were glad we didn’t get two really sweet things to eat. With the burrito, the savory balanced out the sweetness.
After lunch we took a much needed walk around Wicker Park. It was nice and sunny out and we had a bit of time to kill. It’s pretty crazy how different some of the neighborhood is compared to when I lived down there.

Mom :: Mojo Spa, Wicker Park, Chicago
Next, we went to Mojo Spa to get manicures and pedicures. My mom never had a pedicure before so I thought she’d enjoy it when I gave it to her as a gift. She was a little apprehensive because she’s had foot surgery and stuff, but the nail technicians at Mojo were perfect. They took their time and explained everything and were very friendly. It seems like most nail places are either high-end, expensive and stuffy or completely the opposite: a rush job. This place was funky and cute and personable, not busy, and somewhere in between. It was just the right choice. I think my mom might be hooked on nail treatments now!

Great weekend that went by too fast!

The Publican, Fulton Market, Chicago
Last weekend The Publican served brunch for the first time. Chuck, being the food editor of Chicagoist, had gotten notice of it and invited us to come with him to check it out. Dallas and I have been meaning to go to The Publican, so we were all for it.

Bloody Mary :: The Publican, Fulton Market, Chicago

Pork Rinds :: The Publican, Fulton Market, Chicago
The Publican is one of Paul Kahan’s restaurants. He also is the chef/owner at Avec and Blackbird, two spots I’ve been to and have really enjoyed. The brunch wasn’t publicized like crazy, but Chef Kahan was Twittering about it, as was his publicist. I got really excited for the brunch because all week long they were talking about the menu. The morning of brunch they were twittering and posting photos of preparing for the first brunch and what the people involved looked like and how to pull it off and what the menu items looked like prepared. I was SO psyched to go later that day.

Maple Syrup Braised Bacon :: The Publican, Fulton Market, Chicago

Pork Confit, Shrimp & Andouille Stew with Scrambled Eggs :: The Publican, Fulton Market, Chicago
When we got to The Publican it wasn’t all that packed. We were also coming in later, though, so who knows how it was earlier. We stood at a highboy table while we waited to get seated and each ordered bloody marys and beer. The Publican Bloody Mary is made with homemade bitters, balsamic vinegar, chopped celery, Fresno chili, horseradish, regular tomato juice, and Titos vodka. It was delicious, although I thought it was a bit on the thick and chunky side. I needed a straw or something to drink it. A spoon! We had six people all together and when our party all arrived we were seated. Immediately we ordered pork rinds and bacon. Before trying them, I wasn’t sure about the pork rinds, but they were so light and crispy. The bacon was delicious. Maple braised. The salty and sweet combination was fabulous.

Red Wine Poached Eggs :: The Publican, Fulton Market, Chicago

Pretzel that accompanied the Weiswurst :: The Publican, Fulton Market, Chicago
For our meals, this is what we got:

Wood-Fired Egg :: The Publican, Fulton Market, Chicago

Ham Chop :: The Publican, Fulton Market, Chicago
Everybody was really satisfied with their entrees. We were all so excited to be there and brunch at The Publican definitely did not let us down. I loved the ambiance inside. There’s a lot of light wood and it was bright and sunny when we went. The lights weren’t on, it was all ambient light and gorgeous. The service was spot on. My entree, the wood-fired eggs, was taking longer than everyone else’s to come out of the kitchen, so they gave me a tomato & ricotta crustada on the house. It was the only blip in service and they made up for it immediately. And the food… was delicious. I’d definitely like to come back to The Publican for brunch… but especially want to check it out for dinner now.

Crab Cakes Benedict, Logan Square, Chicago
Last weekend Jess and I got together for brunch and a movie. We ate at Rustik. Jess had been there for dinner and liked some of the stuff she had. I think the brunch menu is relatively new. There’s no menu online anywhere, but I took this crummy cell photo of the Rustik Brunch Menu. I had never been to Rustik before so I was excited to try it. I had the Crab Cakes Benedict (2 crab cakes, poached egg, grilled tomato, hollandaise, roasted sweet potatoes) and Jess had the Rustik Frittata (smoked gouda, chorizo, sofrito, homemade tomatillo salsa, toast, roasted sweet potatoes). The tomato in the Crab Cakes Benedict replaced the English muffin that usually comes with eggs Benedict. I thought it was a good swap because the crab cakes were a generous size and a thick piece of bread may have been a bit much. The flavor was good on this dish, but the eggs were over cooked. The yolks were not runny at all.
After brunch we had a little time to kill so we walked around and shopped around a bit even though it was a torrential downpour. Jess took me to Provenance Food & Wine, a cute little shop with lots of wine and specialty food items.
The movie we saw was Marley and Me. If that movie doesn’t get you emotional then you have a heart of stone. The movies at the Logan Theatre are only $3. All the time. $3. Crazy! It’s an old theater, without many updates. .. but $3???
So, basically Jess is my Logan Square ambassador. There are so many restaurants and stores to visit now that the weather is getting warmer. Looking forward to the spring and summer!

Vella Cafe, Bucktown, Chicago
I hadn’t seen Cinnamon since September, so she and I met up on Sunday at Vella Cafe under the Western Blue Line stop. I’d been there one time before, but it was about a year ago. Happy to say the food was delicious and I really like the space. Not only is it conveniently located one train stop from my house, but it’s nice and open and bright inside. So bright that I felt like wearing sunglasses in my seat for a while and my photo is all harsh light. I had the sausage frittata panino with caramelized onions, ajvar mayo, butterkase cheese and smashers on the side. Cinnamon had a ham crepe that she was happy to report tasted as good as I thought it looked.
I was still getting over a bad cold and though I felt better, I was losing my voice. Cinnamon and I had a lot of catching up to do so by the end I was sounding pretty bad. Whatever. Worth it! Hopefully Cinnamon and I can get back on track and meet up monthly again.. and hopefully we can convince Erin to come back out with us next time.
On another note, it seems like I will go months without going out for brunch and then I’ll find myself brunching every day of a weekend. This weekend I also went with Dallas and Kristin for brunch at Flo on Saturday. I don’t know why I’d never been to Flo before – it’s not far from where I lived in East Ukrainian Village. I wasn’t in love with my food (breakfast burrito – onions, tomatoes, veggies were all raw inside and the cheese wasn’t melted) but Dallas and Kristin loved what they got. Dallas got the smoked turkey hash with potato, onion, green pepper, squash and smokey chipotle crema, grilled and topped with two poached eggs, served with fresh fruit and wheat toast. Kristin got brioche toast with grilled smoked turkey, and fresh spinach, topped w/ two poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and asiago cheese. I definitely was in love with the latte I ordered. Perfect amount of foam and soo tasty. And it felt great on my sore throat. I definitely do want to go back to Flo and try what Kristin ordered.
