That night we went out to a locals bar called Aku Bone where one of Dallas’s classmates, Kekoa was playing with his band Holunape. The band plays traditional Hawaiian music and consists of a ukulele, a guitar and a stand-up bass. Kekoa plays the bass. Actually… er.. here he’s the guy in the middle playing guitar. He was mostly playing bass, though.

We timed our trip this year so that Dallas would be able to attend his Kamehameha Schools alumni week. The event at Aku Bone was not an official Kamehameha reunion event, but many of Dallas’s friends from Class of ’94 were there, as well as many Kamehameha alum from other years. The table next to us was full of Class of 1940-something alumni, which was kind of like drinking with your grandparents, but also very cute because the old-timers got up a lot to hula. Kilo and Monte, from Dallas’s class, did a hula. At one point, the older ladies next to us were kissing Monte and putting money in his pants! It got a little crazy.

This was the first time many of Dallas’s classmates had seen each other in 15 years. Dallas has a special bond with the students from the outer islands because they all had to board in the dorms on campus and spent every waking and sleeping minute together for many years. Dallas says he’s lived with some of his classmates longer than he lived with his own brother and sister. It was neat to see them all together again.

Oh, and I didn’t realize it at the time, but Kekoa’s band Holunape is quite accomplished. The following week when we were in Maui the 32nd annual Na Hoku Hanohano awards were held. These awards are given out by the Hawaii Academy of the Recording Arts and are the equivalent of the Grammys, but for Hawaiian music only. Holunape was nominated in four categories. They won the award for group of the year, and their album “Ahea? ‘Ano!” won for Hawaiian album of the year. You can listen to clips from the album at mele.com. (Mele = Song). Later when we were in Kauai at Borders we tried to buy the winning album but they were all sold out. We did see their previous album on the shelf, though.

Saw this book “Wookiee Cookies: A Star Wars Cookbook” at Borders. I know plenty of Star Wars geeks, but non that bake. I think it’s a rare combination.

Art Institute, Millennium Park, Retro on Roscoe

Art Institute, Chicago

After visiting the Sears Tower, Stephanie and I used some free passes I had to check out the Art Institute. I think she liked it, but got her fill fast. Also, a lot of the paintings I wanted to show her were pulled because of the new wing they’re building. We were tired from walking around a lot that day and the day before at Retro on Roscoe, so we decided to take a break.

At the Retro on Roscoe the day before we’d gotten two coupons for free smoothies at Starbucks, so we got those, a cookie and a rice krispie treat and rested in Millennium Park. It was a beautiful day and felt really good to sit down. We just sat and chatted for about 45 minutes.

Feeling a bit rested, we headed over to State Street to look at the cheap accessories at H&M. Most of them were pretty ridiculous or not Stephanie’s style, but she did find one pair of earrings she liked that were only like $4.95. Next we headed up to Borders. Apparently there’s this young adult book series called The Twilight Saga that’s all the rage these days. It’s some kind of vampire love story. There are four books out and they’re already making a movie. Anyway, when Steph was visiting with my cousin Kelly she got the first book in the series and was hooked. We were planning on going to the pool later in the week, so I got her the second book to read poolside. Of course, she couldn’t even wait for the train to pull out of the train station before cracking it open! All the talk of Twilight Saga and Jonas Brothers this week has made me feel a bit ancient. FYI, Miley Cyrus is totally not cool.

For dinner we went to Retro on Roscoe. Dallas got polish food (surprise, surprise). Steph and I split a margherita pizza made on a mobile brick oven and another gyro.

Genki Sushi, Lihue, Kaua’i

Dallas and I went to Lihue to Kukui Grove Center, the largest shopping center on Kaua’i, not that it’s really that big. We looked around Macy’s but didn’t get anything, we each got some things at Déjà Vu surf shop (I got a Billabong handbag and this cute Paul Frank tshirt), and then Dallas got some University of Hawaii caps at Lids. For lunch 2007_03_genki_logo.jpgwe went to Genki Sushi. I love that place. It’s not the best sushi ever, but it’s so much fun. Dallas took me there last time we were in Kaua’i and I liked it so much, we had to go back.

Basically, the sushi chef stands in the middle and puts things a conveyer belt that runs around the restaurant. You take what you want off the belt and eat it. At the end the waitress adds up how much you owe based on color coded plates.

After lunch we went to Borders and ran into Dallas’ brother, Jordan, who was also out shopping. I wanted to pick up a few books by local press that wouldn’t be available on Amazon or in Chicago. I also wanted to pick up some local tunes. I asked Jordan for advice on some contemporary Hawaiian music and he showed me what to get, but told me the CDs were cheaper at Costco, so we went over there and bought them.

Last Monday everyone was golfing at Poipu again so I took the car and went shopping at Kukui Grove Shopping Center in Lihue. It’s pretty much the only mall in Kaua’i. I bought a Roxy skirt at Macy’s then had lunch at Deli & Bread Connection and then drove over to Borders.

By Borders and Big K there was a stand selling malassadas but Kathy kept promising me we’d have the best malasadas at a bakery in Honolulu later in the week so I resisted the urge to try them and buy them from the stand. I found out later it was definitely worth waiting for the good ones!
