New or Opening Soon in Logan Square

November 21st, 2011 · No Comments

I haven’t done an update like this for a while, but never fear! Logan Square has been just as hoppin’ as ever. Here are just a few places I’ve noticed over the past few weeks -

Daddy Cool’s. It finally has a name. This place has been in the works for… years. This is going to be a gourmet hotdog stand.

Chicago’s first and only alternative sports and roller skating shop, Rebel Rebel Derby Shop, opened in late October. The owner is Thia, a.k.a. Wreck ‘n Shrew when she’s doing her thing with the Windy City Rollers. I almost walked past this place, not paying attention, thinking it was The Bike Lane, but then I realized it was new! Rebel Rebel Roller Derby Shop is “a brick-and-mortar alternative sports and roller skating shop in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. Our goal is to provide the community with access to cutting-edge roller skates, skate parts, protective gear, accessories, sportswear, knowledge and expertise!”

It was announced last December that Jam would be moving from its popular Ukrainian Village location to Logan Square. They thought they’d be opening in the spring. I saw a sign at one of the summer farmers markets saying they’d be open in the summer, I think. They finally opened in November, a month after closing the Uke Village location.

The Owl opened in September. The guys behind it are the guys who did aliveOne (remember this!?), Estelle’s and Easy Bar. The Owl has a late night license, which is good because our other late night bar, Bonny’s, can get really long lines.

….speaking of Bonny’s…. This place isn’t new, it opened about a year ago, but I thought I’d add it to the list anyway. They have the old Iggy’s sign up outside. I was at Iggy’s old location once, 7 years ago. Also, if you remember that sketchy Mexican bar where you had to ring a buzzer to get in? We drug you there on Dallas’s birthday? This is it. The Boiler Room guys bought it and redid it. No buzzing necessary. And no druggie signs on the bathroom doors.

Baker Girls. I’ve seen the signs in this window for a while now. Not sure when they’re opening.

This is the former location of Aida’s….

….and now? Brink Dwellers. Dallas and I noticed it last month. They opened on October 21. I thought it was a boutique, but I think it’s more like a thrift. Or a vintage, used store. I’d been talking to Dallas about how Logan Square has had this huge boom of bars and restaurants, but not many stores. Maybe this will be the start of something new.

Tula Yoga Studio. … speaking of new things that aren’t bars or restaurants! And just to the right in this photo there’s a new smoke shop, Ember Smoke. I’ve been meaning to check out the beginners yoga class on Saturday mornings but haven’t gotten there yet. Tula opened at the end of September.

Boiler Room Late Night

August 16th, 2011 · No Comments

Being just steps from our house, the Boiler Room has become a late-night meetup spot for Dallas and I. When we go out separate from each other we now tend to wind up there together at the end of the night. There are screens behind the bar where they play movies so we can keep ourselves occupied while waiting for the other to arrive. Ending our night here lets us have one more drink together, talk about how our nights went, and get a late night slice.

Actually, one time I ordered this hummus and it was pretty tasty. I have to say, though. It was the grilled flat bread that was the most tasty. I think they just grill up pizza dough.

Another time, because I was partial to the name and the carmelized onion, we ordered the Lombardi pizza. It had “house sauce,” blue cheese, sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions and rosemary.

Logan Square Neighborhood Walk: California Avenue

July 23rd, 2011 · 1 Comment

One day a few months ago, I was wanting to go for a walk, but wanting to go somewhere new. I used to do these “neighborhood walks” and post photos on this site, but haven’t done it forever. So, I decided that maybe over the course of this summer I will try to walk Logan Square. When you look up Logan Square boundaries, people have varying opinions. For this exercise, I’m going to go with these boundaries for the neighborhood: Diversey to the north, Western to the east, Armitage to the south and Pulaski to the West. However you classify it, the neighborhood is HUGE. So, I think if I do this I’ll have to break it up into a bunch of chunks. As the summer has progressed I haven’t done a great job keeping up on this project, but I’ll keep trying. Here are my photos from my walk on California Avenue from Armitage to Diversey.

Built in Chicago Launch Party

June 24th, 2011 · No Comments

Built in Chicago is a site that was created about 8 months ago and is a resource for digital professionals working and building great web and mobile businesses in Chicago. Last night I attended their launch party with Jess and Alden. Tribeca Flashpoint sponsored the event and it was held in their space at the Merchandise Mart. There was a $10 admission fee, but once you were in, it was all free drinks and snacks.

The beer sponsor was Finch’s Beer Co. Ok. But made in Chicago? How have I never heard of them? I asked the servers and they said that Finch’s has only been in production for about 8 weeks and that it is based out of the Albany Park neighborhood. Interesting. I had two Golden Wing blond ales and Jess and Alden both had the Cut Throat pale ale. We all liked the beer and when I tweeted about it, Chuck declared that the blonde will be the beer of this summer.

Ok. So, enough about the beer. The Built in Chicago event was basically a mixer. It reminded me of Tech Cocktail, but with more suits and more gray hair. A grown up Tech Cocktail? I mean, even Ron May showed up at the end (blerg!). I talked to people I knew from various stages of my “past lives” – Chicagoist, FeedBurner, Google – and also from past Tech Cocktail events. It was nice to see people I hadn’t seen for quite a while (Kevin – from Google & now heading up the Chicago Entrepreneurial Center , Sean – from Chicagoist, now at Have My Shift, Brad – from my Chicagoist days, now at Appolicious, and Blagica from all over? :) ) Also nice meet some new people, too.

I like how Built in Chicago seems like more of an ongoing thing. Like, sure, they’ll have these face-to-face networking events occasionally, but you don’t just go away after that and see people at the next event. Built in Chicago is also a whole social networking site for like-minded interactive people in Chicago. I think it should be a bit easier to keep in the loop and keep in contact with people. Looking forward to seeing how this all evolves.

PS. At the end of the night Alden and I met up with Dallas at the Boiler Room and guess what kind of beer I noticed they had on tap? Finch’s! So I had another Golden Wing. Maybe this will be the beer of the summer.

Green Mill

June 14th, 2011 · No Comments

Ross and his girlfriend Chelsea were in town this weekend. We met up with them at Ribfest, where it was rainy and only about 50 degrees outside. When Ross flew in on Wednesday for work it was 97 degrees. He didn’t even pack a coat. Little did he know how fickle Chicago weather is!

We wandered around Ribfest for a while, drank some beer. Dallas and I stopped to talk to Josh at the Smoke Daddy booth. We also shared some kalbi ribs (and both agreed that when we make them they are better!). To use up some tickets and get out of the rain we had some corndogs and onion rings.

We then met up with some other friends – Todd, Brian, Sara, Brett – at Corner 41, which was kind of a mistake. It was nice to get out of the rain, but the bar had pretty much run out of beer. We bought their last 5 Coors Lights and they were all warm. I hate Coors Light, but I put it on ice and it actually was not that bad. Honestly, it tasted like water.

Chelsea used to live in Chicago and wanted to take Ross to the Green Mill, Chicago’s historic jazz club. I’d never been there and also wanted to go, so I tagged along. It was pretty cool, even if you’re not that into jazz, you should go once. That night’s jazz quartet consisted of drums, bass, and two saxophone’s. The band was called Mike Reed’s People, Places & Things.

We only stayed for a drink and one set, but it was enough to get a feel for the place. Ross and Chelsea went back to their downtown hotel and I went back to Logan Square where I met up with Dallas for a late night beer and slice of pizza at Boiler Room.
