Dinner in Waimea

Last week Tuesday we spent the whole day on the west side of Kaua’i, in and around Waimea. This is where Dallas lived. In fact, like last year, we were having dinner at the his parents still own, the house where he grew up.

First we had lunch at Waimea Brewing Company. They claim to be the world’s westernmost brewpub. Dallas had been to their restaurant in Seattle when visiting his brother there, but had never been to the original in Waimea. Pretty good food, I didn’t try the beer though.

Next we drove up to Koke’e Park to take in some views of Waimea Canyon. While we were up there we walked down this winding gravel road to see if we could locate a house that Dallas’ parents lived in after they first got married. A little had changed, but the building was still there. After driving down we tried to visit Polihale Beach because I’ve never seen it before, but it was closed “until further notice”. Later on we heard stories of some problems they’re having in the park with “aggressive hippies camped out”. Don’t know if that’s why the beach is closed or not, just a rumor I heard.

Jo Jo’s Shave Ice in Waimea is the best on the island so I had to be sure to stop for that. Dallas and I were inside and we had to pool all of our cash together to buy one $3.50 shave ice. Lucky for me he didn’t want any so I could get the upgrades – cream on top and mac nut ice cream instead of vanilla. Still I didn’t get away without him teasing me that there was only enough money for me to get shave ice, not him. But truthfully he didn’t want any. I guess growing up with the best shave ice shop on the island (or all of Hawaii) at the end of your driveway makes it not such a big deal.

For dinner there were about 25 people. It was great to see everyone one last time before leaving for Honolulu the next day. And the food. There was sooo much food. Between the pupus and the dinner and dessert this is everything I noted we had:

  • Boiled Peanuts
  • Seared Ahi
  • Grilled Chicken
  • Grilled Steak
  • Grilled Pork
  • Grilled Ono
  • Grilled Aku
  • Grilled Portuguese Sausage
  • Kauai Asparagus
  • Broccoli
  • Portuguese Meat
  • Lettuce/Veggie Salad
  • Fruit Salad
  • Macaroni Salad
  • White Rice (always!)
  • Chantilly Cake (is this local?)
  • Blueberry Cheesecake
  • Jello
  • Carrot Cake
  • Coffee Cake

Chris & Tandy’s wedding ceremony began at 11am on the Regency Club lawn of the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa in Poipu (the site says Koloa?). Everyone who flew into Kaua’i for the wedding was greeted with a kukui nut lei. In the past, kukui nuts showed a mark of rank and importance. Back in the day they were only worn by Hawaiian ali’i. Today they are worn both formally and casually and are sometimes given out on special occassions as a sign of respect and love.

The ceremony was conducted by Chris’s father, who is a minister. It wasn’t too terribly long, but it was so hot and sunny that I’m surprised people didn’t start falling over and passing out from standing at the alter for so long!

Dinner

Dallas’ Uncle Dee and Aunt Kathy live in Waimea and had us over on Thursday night for dinner, along with other friends and family. Uncle D and Aunt Kathy live in the house that Dallas grew up in and his grandmother lives in another house on the property. The food that everyone brought and made was amazing. The pupu (appetizer) table had wontons with hot mustard sauce, sushi, stuffed lychee (with cream cheese and macadamia nuts), chicken wings, an artichoke/toast/mayo/parmesan appetizer that Kristin and I helped make, and my new favorite, seared ahi. Dallas had talked all week about this Portuguese meat that his aunt makes. It was so delicious. Kind of like post roast with the vegetables, but with more of a vinegar sauce. We also had grilled chicken breasts, fillet mignon, macaroni salad, a green salad with papaya seed dressing, and a fruit salad. If that wasn’t enough there were also several desserts. One of Dallas’ aunts found out I am a chocolate fiend and hooked me up with some triple chocolate cheese cake AND brownies. No wonder I gained weight this vacation! Everything was so great. Mahalo to Dallas’ family and friends for having us all over.

Uncle Steve’s Party

December 30th, 2003 · 7 Comments

My dad’s side of the family has it’s roots in the deep south. My uncle very much celebrates this fact and you see it with the decorations in his house. Here are some of the more eccentric – mounted alligator heads. Freaky. Steve threw this holiday party as an excuse (like he needs one!) to cook up a huge slab of prime rib. Cooking is one of his passions and he never disappoints. The party was also for my Aunt Elissa, who was in from Florida, and my cousin Jason who was visiting from Virginia.

My dad is the oldest of eight kids so I have cousins galore (my mom is also one of eight kids). Several of them, including my brother, had babies this year. These are my cousin, Anna’s, twins Colin & Keegan.
