I’m on a Boat!

August 10th, 2009 · 5 Comments

Killian grew up sailing on Lake Michigan with his dad and brothers. Remember last year? He even got married at the Columbia Yacht Club, where they dock their boat. Killian and his family do the big races, like the race from Chicago to Mackinac Island, but also do smaller Beer Can Regattas every Wednesday night.

For years Killian has invited me to go out with them on a Wednesday night and I never did. Dallas got really sick once when he went and I was afraid I would too. I’ve gotten sick on a zodiac in Hawaii and on a sailboat in the Caribbean and whale watching in San Diego, so I had a history. At Tour de Fat Jess and Killian got to talking and Killian told her about sailing and Jess was interested in going some time. Then about a week ago I saw Killian’s brother Malachy on the train and we started talking about it. Finally, I decided “enough talking!” and made plans for Jess and I to join them for sailing.

I took Dramamine ahead of time and I didn’t get sick. I had a fun time and so did Jess. I don’t know that we could tell you much about sailing.. we were just trying to stay out of the way of the action.. but I did get some great photos.

Alternate Bike Commute

Last night I rode my bike home up the lakefront path instead of going up Wells to Lincoln. It added some time onto the commute, but the green grass and trees and blue sky and water were much more relaxing than the traffic on Lincoln.

Does anyone know anything more about the giraffe statues (last photo) that are on Roscoe St.?

On Sunday we were going to go to the beach, but the weather wasn’t cooperating. We ended up going on a Wendella boat tour. The tour we chose was the hour-long Chicago River Architecture Tour It went on both the north and the south branches of the river, then just to the lake, and back to the dock at Michigan Avenue. Some facts on the tour I knew but there were tons I didn’t know. And it was cool to see everything from a different point of view. I spoke to Amanda a short while ago and she said Jess is still talking about riding the train and not about the long boat ride we went on!

I don’t know why this boat was on this crane, but it was like that for several days last week on the Dearborn St. bridge.

On Saturday we took the commuter rail to Rob’s place in Plymouth, MA and had a barbecue. I hadn’t seen Rob or his sister, Sarah, who was visiting from Washington D.C., since our trip to Hawaii so it was nice to see them and meet their family. Also nice to finally meet friends that I have heard a lot about.

Rob has a pretty sweet place on a small lake that his parents and grandparents also live on (in separate houses). Behind Rob’s back yard is a sailing pond and in front, across the street, is a lake. We spent most of the afternoon swimming in the lake. In the evening we ate… and ate… and drank… and ate.
