Bloody Cheesehead

Right before he started complaining about me taking his photo.

Crispy pork belly and egg with arugula, tomato and roasted garlic aioli. Dallas pulling the tomato out!

Pork & Beans: Pork belly confit, fried oyster, white bean ragout, poached organic egg.

I have been to Revolution Brewing more times than I can count. Lately, when we go, there seems to be a lot of new things, which is exciting.. and probably why I’m not bored yet. This time Dallas and I both had brunch items, although the pork belly and egg sandwich just recently was added to the regular menu too. Dallas drank some kind of a beer-mosa. I had a bloody cheesehead, which was a bloody mary with chunks of cheddar. We also shared a pretzel for an appetizer. The best part of the pretzel is that it is served with the beer cheese soup for dipping and the beer cheese soup is so rich and creamy! I don’t think I could order just the soup and eat it, but dipping a salty pretzel into it is perfect. The pork & beans was new on the menu. To be honest, I usually LOVE what I order at Rev, but the pork & beans were just ok.

3rd Largest Whole Foods in the Whole World

May 24th, 2009 · 9 Comments

Yesterday I went with Dallas to get his hair cut (finally) at Mops Beauty Shop. I’ve been going to Kate at Mops since we moved to Logan Square and I was happy to have her work on Dallas’ hair. She did a great job today. If you live near Logan Square you should check them out. They’re on California just north of Fullerton. Kate and Krista just opened the shop around the time we moved here, Kate is a friend of a friend and they’re all very talented. Happy to support their business!

After the haircut, we went to Dunlays on the Square to eat lunch/brunch. I hadn’t had any coffee yet, so I got an iced one.. but quickly switched to a bloody mary or two. It was such a nice day out (high of 78) and was so nice just to sit and relax at a table outside. Jess lives nearby so she came over and joined us.

Later on I had a little bit of grocery shopping to do, so I suggested to Jess that we check out the new Whole Foods that opened this past Wednesday. At 75,000 square feet, It is the 3rd largest Whole Foods in the world. Only the Austin flagship store and the London store are larger. This Whole Foods in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago is insane. Every department is at least 2-3 times bigger than the departments in the Whole Foods we’re used to shopping at in Lakeview. And there’s a river walk along the Chicago River. And there is a 2 story parking structure in addition to the street-level lot. And the free samples everywhere you turned. And there’s a food court with everything from sub sandwiches to tacos to Japanese fare. And they make 20+ kinds of gelato in house. And. And. And. Sensory overload! The new store is awesome, but overwhelming. .. especially after a day of just relaxing in the warm weather. I was ready for a nap!

The photo below was taken as we descended down the elevator into the store from the 2nd floor parking ramp. There was organic produce as far as the eye can see. My photo is kind of deceptive because I didn’t have a wide enough lens on my camera, but believe me, produce to the ends of the earth. Plus the guy on the escalator was acting like he’s on the FBI’s Most Wanted List or something. As soon as I took a photo his head whipped around and he gave me the nastiest looks! A couple other notes about his photo: 1. The guy in the orange shirt is looking at a map. The store is that big. A map is needed. 2. This store has everything. Even Whole Babies?

Brunch @ The Publican

The Publican
The Publican, Fulton Market, Chicago

Last weekend The Publican served brunch for the first time. Chuck, being the food editor of Chicagoist, had gotten notice of it and invited us to come with him to check it out. Dallas and I have been meaning to go to The Publican, so we were all for it.

The Publican is one of Paul Kahan’s restaurants. He also is the chef/owner at Avec and Blackbird, two spots I’ve been to and have really enjoyed. The brunch wasn’t publicized like crazy, but Chef Kahan was Twittering about it, as was his publicist. I got really excited for the brunch because all week long they were talking about the menu. The morning of brunch they were twittering and posting photos of preparing for the first brunch and what the people involved looked like and how to pull it off and what the menu items looked like prepared. I was SO psyched to go later that day.

When we got to The Publican it wasn’t all that packed. We were also coming in later, though, so who knows how it was earlier. We stood at a highboy table while we waited to get seated and each ordered bloody marys and beer. The Publican Bloody Mary is made with homemade bitters, balsamic vinegar, chopped celery, Fresno chili, horseradish, regular tomato juice, and Titos vodka. It was delicious, although I thought it was a bit on the thick and chunky side. I needed a straw or something to drink it. A spoon! We had six people all together and when our party all arrived we were seated. Immediately we ordered pork rinds and bacon. Before trying them, I wasn’t sure about the pork rinds, but they were so light and crispy. The bacon was delicious. Maple braised. The salty and sweet combination was fabulous.

The Publican: Weiswurst & Pretzel

For our meals, this is what we got:

  • Benton ham, red wine-poached egg, grilled bread and bĂ©arnaise ($12)
  • Weiswurst and pretzel ($10)
  • Wood-fired egg with harissa, Gouda and grilled bread ($8)
  • Pork confit, shrimp and andouille stew with scrambled eggs ($14)
  • Smoked ham chop with Bird Mill grits and poached egg ($12)

Everybody was really satisfied with their entrees. We were all so excited to be there and brunch at The Publican definitely did not let us down. I loved the ambiance inside. There’s a lot of light wood and it was bright and sunny when we went. The lights weren’t on, it was all ambient light and gorgeous. The service was spot on. My entree, the wood-fired eggs, was taking longer than everyone else’s to come out of the kitchen, so they gave me a tomato & ricotta crustada on the house. It was the only blip in service and they made up for it immediately. And the food… was delicious. I’d definitely like to come back to The Publican for brunch… but especially want to check it out for dinner now.
