John and Dallas got up really early to pick up Dallas’ brother Jordan and his friend Koa from the Lihue airport. Jordan had flown in from Seattle the day before and stayed with Koa, who lives in Honolulu, for a night. From the airport they were going right to the Puakea Golf Course for their morning tee time. One problem. Well, actually, two. Jordan and Koa were out partying too late and 1) Jordan lost his phone and 2) they missed their flight. Whoops. John and Dallas ended up canceling their tee time and rescheduling at the Mokihana course at Kaua’i Lagoons and then getting saimin at Hamura’s Saimin Stand to kill some time. Which, is not a bad deal, since Hamura’s Saimin Stand is a Kaua’i institution and was even honored by the James Beard Foundation.

Allison, Susan and I decided to have a day of shopping in Poipu and Koloa town. The Poipu Shopping Village is where we were the night before to go to Poipu Tropical Burgers, but we didn’t shop around at all. The shopping center is a good mix of stores. From Crazy Shirts souvenir tshirts to surf shops to high-end jewelers and art dealers.

Here’s a story – So, two nights before this Caroline, Tammy and Carrie came busting into the condo after having .. er.. a few cocktails and told us that they had just been hanging out with someone who had either hung out with or met Carlos Santana and Ben Stiller together. Now, these girls were da-runk and we thought “Why would Carlos Santana and Ben Stiller every hang out together? And does Santana really hang in Kaua’i?” But at the Poipu Shopping Village we spotted Carlos Santana. And later on we learned that Ben Stiller owns a house on Kaua’i. Moral of the story: Sometimes drunk girls do know what they’re talking about.

After shopping in Poipu, we headed over to Koloa Town. The shopping here is small and quaint and really is just a small strip of stores that I have an affinity for. A candle and soap shop, a surf shop, but most important of all, Lappert’s ice cream. I love it. The Kaua’i Pie flavor is the best. A perfect mix of Kona coffee ice cream, chocolate fudge, toasted coconut, and macadamia nuts. I had it 3 times: In Koloa Town, in Princeville, and at the original store (where they make all the ice cream) in Hanapepe. Actually, I had Lappert’s 4 times, if you count the mac nut ice cream that was in the shave ice I got in Waimea. Lappert’s all over Kaua’i. That should have been my vacation motto or something.

The shave ice was good, but we needed a proper lunch, so we stopped at the Koloa Fish Market for some plate lunches. Like Jo Jo’s, the fish market is kind of a shack, just a small old building, but the food is excellent. The freshest fish, and great plate lunches. I first got a plate lunch from Koloa Market with Caroline the last time we were in Kaua’i and I couldn’t wait to have one again. Dallas and John got Kalua pig, Susan and I opted for the lau lau. In Chicago there’s a Hawaiian restaurant that we go to sometime that has many local favorites like loco moco and kalua pig and kalbi ribs, but no lau lau. I wasn’t going to pass up my one chance in who knows how long to get the lau lau.* Lau lau is pork and butter fish wrapped in taro leaves (that you eat) and cooked in ti leaves (that you don’t eat)… except I don’t think mine had the butter fish. Dang, that’s like the prize you hunt for! But it was still good. Included in each of the plate lunches were white rice, poke, chicken long rice, and lomi lomi salmon. I also got a piece of haupia so that Susan and John could try it.

After chowing, we laid around by the pool and hot tub waiting for Allison to arrive. And somehow she finally did. And somehow she found her way to Lihue to our condo in Poipu with hardly any directions at all. Allison had been to Kaua’i one time before, but it was years ago. I don’t know how she remembered.

We also stopped at Big Save to stock up on some supplies. I feel like we went to Big Save to get more for everyone at the condo every time we passed it! More Hawaiian Sun, more beer, more creamer, more coffee, etc.

Gillin’s Beach, Kaua’i

On our first full day in Kaua’i, Dallas and John went to golf the Kiele Course at Kauai Lagoons Golf Club. Susan, Caroline, Carrie, Tammy and I went to Costco and Big Save to stock up the condo for the week. Normally, we’d just have gone to Big Save, but only because the Costco just opened in the fall and didn’t exist before. We thought, “why get a regular-sized bottle of rum when you can get a Costco-sized bottle of rum?” … and other stuff too. With 10 or more people staying in the condos, we could use some Costco-sized groceries.

We stopped back at the condo to put things away, pack a small lunch, make some drinks, and change into our bathing suits, then it was off to Gillin’s Beach. Gillin’s is part of Mahaulepu Beach and is also the beach we discovered and went to a couple times the last time we were in Kaua’i. I like it so much. It’s so pretty and there’s always hardly anyone there.

After the beach, we met back up with Dallas and John to drink some Steinlager around the hot tub at our condo before going to dinner.

Keoki’s Paradise: A Kaua’i Favorite

After arriving in Lihue, we dumped our bags off at the condo, met up with Dallas’ sister and friends who arrived a bit earlier than us, went to Big Save to grab some beer and other things quick, then went to Keoki’s Paradise. It was our first stop off last time we were on Kaua’i too. A great restaurant for some really good, fresh seafood and a few more umbrella’d mai tais.

John, Susan, Dallas and I had dinner at Keoki’s while Caroline, Dallas’ sister, and her friends Tammy and Carrie just stayed Keoki’s bar for drinks. Our table split some ahi sashimi, panko crusted scallops with wasabi butter sauce, and some mushu pork (Kalua pig, cabbage, and plum sauce with mushu wrappers) for pupus. For an entree I had opah (a white, moist Hawaiian moon fish) saute’ed with citrus, shoyu and sesame butter sauce with garlic smashed potatoes. It was fantastic and a great way to relax and end a really long travel day.

Rachelle & Dallas

Following Chris & Tandy’s wedding ceremony was a cocktail hour with pupus and then lunch. Luckily lunch was inside an air conditioned ballroom. A Hawaiian band played while we were eating and some hula and tahitian dancers came out and did their thing. It was very luauish. Remember last year when Dallas was chosen to learn how to do the hula? They did the same thing at the wedding, but with some haole boys from Iowa who couldn’t hula to save their life. It was fun(ny).

After lunch the band and dancers left and there were many speeches and stories told by the wedding party about Chris and Tandy. I found it really interesting since I don’t know Chris and Tandy that well. .. it helped me learn more about them, how they met, and their 8-year long relationship. There were people at the wedding from all over the world, Hawaii, the mainland, Japan, to name a few places, so I’m sure that this was fun for them too.. to hear stories from all different aspects of Tandy & Chris’s lives.

Each of the tables where the guests sat was named for something in Chris & Tandy’s lives. One was the Wiamea table, one the Iowa table, one table was called “8″ representing how many years they’ve been together. Our table was “Food Network vs. ESPN”. Apparently they fight over the remote! After talking story for quite some time, Marissa, Tandy’s sister introduced everyone who’d travelled to attend the wedding. Quite a lot of people.. and like I said, from all over the world. Next Tandy made up a story using the terms represented on each of the tables. It was kind of like Mad Libs and when she pointed to your table you had to shout out the name of your table to finish the sentence and continue on the story. Kind of hard to explain but it worked out really well.

Next, the bride and groom did the traditional bouquet/garter toss. The wedding was small enough that they had a list of the single people and if you were single and didn’t participate your name got shouted out over the microphone and you were peer pressure forced to participate!

Finally, everyone mingled around with drinks in hand. It was a fun, laid back kind of wedding. It was great to feel the love in the room, the friendship between the people attending and how much they loved and respected Chris and Tandy and how they all traveled so far to be there and show their support. Definitely not one of those weddings you attend and feel like you don’t know anyone or like you’re not sure what’s going on with the couple.

In addition to the kukui nut leis, Chris and Tandy gave out personalized chopsticks and small rice bowls.

Later on that night Chris and Tandy had a really informal party at Kekaha Beach. A few people went swimming, but mostly we sat around for sunset and the evening, eating pupus and drinking beer and talking. A bonfire was built and some people also caught some crabs on the beach. A nice way to unwind after a long, stressful day for a some people, I’m sure.

Dallas loves this canned beef. You can’t get it on the mainland. This is when we stopped at Big Save in Waimea to get beer for the beach party.

Bon fire at the beach party.
