Mista

May 17th, 2011 · 2 Comments

Mista is a somewhat new restaurant on LaSalle Street, not too far from my office, where Berry Chill used to be. There are locations in Andersonville and Lakeview and this is their first restaurant in The Loop. On the menu is cracker crust pizza, gourmet salads, pasta and wraps. Mista is proud to use organic and all-natural ingredients, when possible. Sounds like a winner right?

I thought I’d stop in for lunch one day. I ordered the Mista Salad – organic field greens, organic granny smith apples, organic dried cherries, toasted macadamia nuts, lowfat feta and the signature dressing. I placed my order at the counter and sat down to wait for my number to be called. I waited. And waited. The guy who took my order kept looking right at me, so I just tried to be patient. He knew I was there. He could see I’d been waiting a while. He hadn’t forgotten about me. .. I thought. Before long I realized I’d been waiting 25 minutes. For a salad! I went up to the counter to see what was what and the guy who took my order, who I thought had his eye on me, apologized and checked on the order. Within minutes I had my salad and he threw in a bag of homemade chips to make up for it.

I was running late for a meeting at this point, so I just went right to a conference room and ate while we talked. I remember really liking the salad, but honestly, it’s kind of a blur. .. I was working, and by then so hungry, I just ate it.

I was at a crossroads after my first visit. Liked the salad, had to wait almost a half hour to get it. I decided to give them one more try a few weeks after my first visit. I ordered the same salad and this time I got my order within a few minutes. When I got back to my office and opened the salad I noticed it was like 95% greens and hardly any toppings. I like it when you get a bit of the extras in every bite and that for sure was not happening with this salad. I felt like I could go to the store and buy a bag of mixed greens and have the same lunch. Bah! I don’t know if this is how the first salad was, honestly, because I was working through that one.. but I don’t think I’ll be giving Mista a third chance.

Starfruit Cafe

I was kind of bummed when the Berry Chill frozen yogurt store closest to my office closed. I didn’t visit a ton, but when I wanted a somewhat healthy snack I liked to swing by. Then I realized that a new Starfruit Cafe was even closer to the office, in the Merchandise Mart.

Starfruit Cafe sells frozen kefir, instead of frozen yogurt. According to them, this is even more healthy because kefir has 10 live probiotic cultures when yogurt typically only has 2 or 3. These good bacteria aid in digestion, boot immunity, promote weight loss, help fight lactose intolerance, prevent some side effects from antibiotics and help lower cholesterol.

The taste is similar to frozen yogurt. And the toppings available are similar to what Berry Chill or a Pinkberry would have. I usually get a plain/original flavored kefir with fruit and sometimes Milk & Honey granola on top.

Berry Chill

July 23rd, 2008 · 2 Comments

Yesterday I had to go downtown so I met up with Alden and Jessica to celebrate Potbelly Wednesday on a Tuesday. Jess made a comment when we walked into Potbelly that inside it “smells like FeedBurner.” I couldn’t agree more. We went to Potbelly every week when I worked at FeedBurner and the smell and memory will be tied together for a very long time.

After Alden and Jessica went back to work (ha ha) I went to try out Berry Chill, which is our version of Pinkberry. I visited Pinkberry once while visiting New York back in November and really liked it. I couldn’t remember exactly where Berry Chill was so I just used Google SMS to figure it out.

Berry Chill is basically the same as Pinkberry. The inside is set up the same. You order on the right, slide to the left past the toppings, pay and pick up your order on the left. There are very few tables inside and a couple outside. I accidentally got the pistachio yogurt, which is the only one with fat in it. For toppings I got raspberries, almonds and mini chocolate chips. I didn’t taste the tanginess that I remember in the Pinkberry yogurt, but it may have been because I got a flavored yogurt and not the original. I’ll have to go back! Too bad it’s way down on State & Ontario.

One thing I liked about Berry Chill is that they used plastic, reusable dishes and spoons. Nicer to eat with and better for the environment. Also, the spoon changed color when it got cold.
