Beans Beans Beans

November 16th, 2011 · No Comments

I used to despise slow cooker beans when my mom made them when I was a kid. I think it was the lima beans that put me off, even though they all pretty much taste the same when you cook them together for hours. These days Dallas teases me that beans are my favorite food. Even though they’re not. Sort of.

I emailled my mom recently for her Beans Beans Beans recipe so I could make them for a football party. They turned out great and couldn’t be easier to make! Just a warning though, this recipe makes A LOT. Only a few people ended up coming over to watch the game and we ate beans every day for about a week plus froze bowls of them!

Beans Beans Beans

Brown 1# lean hamburger

Add 1 cup chopped onion cook until onion is clear, drain.

In slow cooker add as many cans/kinds of beans as you want: There is no rule here!
- Black Beans
- Vegetarian Pork & Beans
- Lima Beans (drained)
- Red Beans (drained)
- Light Red Kidney Beans (drained)
- Great Northern Beans (drained)
- Butter Beans (drained) [we add 2 cans!]
- Navy Beans (drained)
- Cannellini Beans (drained)
- Dark Red Kidney Beans (drained)
- Vegetarian Baked Beans
- Pinto Beans (drained)

Stir in the following:
- Hamburger/Onion mixture
- 1/2 cup Hormel Real Bacon (or your own cooked and broken)
- 1 cup Ketchup (or more if needed)
- 1 cup brown sugar.

Cook overnight on Low heat. Stir occasionally.

Note: I didn’t add lima beans because Dallas has an aversion, although I think I’ve gotten over it. I also used more barbecue sauce than ketchup because Dallas also has an aversion to that. I didn’t cook the beans overnight but I did put them in the slow cooker around 10 a.m. and we ate around 4 or 5 p.m.

Mystery Beans

October 8th, 2008 · 6 Comments

I bought these beans at the farmers market over the summer. I thought I would experiment with them and find a recipe online. Stephanie and I shelled them all into a bowl and then I got busy and they had sat in the bowl on the counter for a couple days. By the time I got back to them they were getting moldy and sprouted, so I tossed them. Just wondering if anyone knows what type of beans these are. Or, if they taste good when cooked.

Mac the Knife Helps Make Beans

I don’t think I’ve ever owned a really good knife in my entire life. When I first moved out of my parent’s house I had a set of Ginsu knives – you know, the ones they sell on TV that will cut through a shoe then slice through a tomato with the greatest of ease all for the low low price of $29.99. They were alright, but nothing great. Then when I moved around I don’t know what happened, but when I got to Chicago I just needed some knives immediately so I ended up with a craptacular set from Ikea that barely cuts anything.

My brother gave me a gift certificate for my birthday so I decided to use it to invest in one good multi-purpose knife. I got some suggestions from people and decided on getting a Mac knife. The reviews that I read were good and these are the knives that Dallas said his entire family has used for years, so I was sold. It was expensive, but worth every penny. I can’t really remember a time when I didn’t shove the knife in an onion and then rock back and forth to force it through. This new knife goes through onions like buttah! So awesome.

On to the beans..

I love beans but I’ve never made them at home. When I came across this recipe on Cooking Light I decided to try it out. I know it’s the cheater way – with the ketchup base, and only cooking them for about 45 minutes, not like all day, and canned beans, but… baby steps! They turned out really good.. very barbecuey, though. I prefer a little less barbecue bite, but they were still good.. and easy to make.
