Lunch. Bike. Pool. Barbecue.

July 27th, 2008 · 7 Comments

Erin got a new job and she works from home now. Since her home is a 5 minute walk from my home, on Thursday we made plans to lunch on salads from Robey’s while sitting outside in the sun. Nice time. Erin had her bike in at Roscoe Village Bikes and while we were waiting for it to get done we shopped around a bit at Roscoe Village stores. While in the bike shop I talked to them about my bike and what sorts of cruiser bikes they have. RVB doesn’t sell Electra bikes but told me about some other brands I could look into. I made note of them and thought I’d looked them up online, but ended up not doing it. I’d like to support RVB, but they didn’t have any of the bikes in stock and would have to special order what I wanted and I was afraid I wouldn’t like it or how it rides.

After lunch I went and sat at our neighborhood pool for a while. It was pretty packed! I couldn’t get a lounge chair so I just laid my towel out on the cement and enjoyed the weather.

On Friday I went to the bike shop where Dallas and I originally bought our bikes, On The Route. I talked to John there a lot about replacing my Electra Townie and realized something I didn’t know before. I had a 7-speed bike and the 2008 models of the 7-speed bike don’t have all the bells and whistles my bike had, which is why my bike was so much more expensive than the 7-speeds available now. I had the internal hub shifting and a shock system and fenders, all things that the 2008 model 7-speeds don’t have. So, to get those things I’d have to downgrade to a 3-speed or upgrade to the 8-speed. I decided to upgrade. It was more expensive, but the money I’m getting from insurance will take a bite out of the price. OTR had to order my bike, which I wasn’t nervous about since John told me that the seat and the body of the bike haven’t changed so it should ride just like my old bike. The bike will arrive in a week or two and this is what it will look like:

Friday night we had a barbecue at our house. A lot of people came, about 15 or so. It was fun and I’ll admit I drank too much of the Summer of Rachelle official drink. On Saturday I was SO sick. I mean, I don’t even think it was hangover sick. I maybe was coincidentally having the stomach flu? I was still getting sick at 9 p.m. last night. There’s no way that was still a hangover. I couldn’t even take a sip of water. What a waste of a day. I don’t know what happened, but I missed Colleen and Justin’s going away party, Margaret’s Golden 26th birthday and a chance to see an afternoon showing of the Dark Knight at the IMAX with Liz and Killian. I need to remind myself that I’m almost 33, not 23.

My brother had a barbecue at his house on Saturday. I took the Amtrak up to attend. Amanda and maybe Richard (?) have done a lot of work on their yard these past few years and it’s looking great. They got some new patio furniture and we all sat outside while the kids played on their swing set and slide. The weather was great for a few hours. Then it rained and we ran around picking everything up and stayed inside for a while. And then it was beautiful out again and we played bocce ball for hours.

I was glad Kelly and Jeff made it down for the party because I’d never met Charlotte before. She’s about 2 months old now. We figured that was about how old Tessa was when I first met her out in Washington DC. Now, of course, she’s running around with the older kids and talking like crazy. All of the kids were having a great time chasing each other around and playing.

Saturday night mom and dad drove me back to Chicago and stayed overnight here. We went to brunch at Sola and ran a few errands on Sunday and then they start their drive home. It’s kind of windy and cloudy here now. Hopefully they didn’t catch any rain on the way.

Birthday Weekend

September 9th, 2007 · 8 Comments

This weekend has been a pretty good birthday weekend for me, not that it’s over and I’m not still trying to use it as an excuse to get Dallas to do things for me.

On Friday my parents sent me flowers and then on Friday night Dallas and I went out to eat at Spring, a restaurant in my old neighborhood that I’ve always wanted to try. Spring on North at Damen so I used to walk past it when I lived by Wicker Park. When I first moved here, though, Spring was a hot spot and you had to plan your reservations well in advance. Now that they’ve been around for 5 years I was able to make a same-day reservation. The chef at Spring is Shawn McClain and last year he won the James Beard award for Best Chef in the Midwest. Last year I also heard this Hungry Magazine interview with him and really was interested in going to one of his restaurants. Chef McClain has 3 restaurants in Chicago – Spring, Green Zebra (vegetarian), & Custom House (steak). Since I was most familiar with Spring, I chose that one for my birthday.

Dallas and I split two appetizers at Spring. The Japanese Hamachi & Yellowfin Tuna Poke, which was made with aged soy sauce, toasted sesame oil and sweet chili, and the Scallop & Potato Raviolis with mushroom-black truffle reduction. We also split a Hawaiian Hearts of Palm salad with shaved fennel, shrimp, pickled oranges, & sansho peppercorn dressing. For an entree Dallas had the Pacific Black Cod with Chinese black bean-sake glaze, grilled hearts of palm and yuzu citrus sauce. I had an entree special that was made with monkfish over a reduction and a mixture of chopped potatoes and corn and a piece of pork belly. I commented that the pork belly tasted like bacon, which made Dallas laugh. I guess I never knew that bacon is made from pork belly. For dessert, Dallas had a tasting of 4 different uniquely flavored ice creams. I had the Valrhona Chocolate Baked Mousse Cake with olive oil ice milk and candied kalamata olives. I also had a white wine I really enjoyed. It was a 2006 wine from Wilamette Valley, Oregon called Junehog and made by the Ransom Wine Co.

Our meal at Spring was pricey, but I would recommend it to anyone celebrating a special occasion. We had a great time there. The food was delicious and all of the staff was very friendly. I think everyone working in the restaurant knew it was my birthday and made sure to say “Happy Birthday” when serving us or coming by the table.

On Saturday we had all of our friends over for a barbecue. I didn’t realize until the day before that they were shutting Roscoe Street down for a festival on the same day. It caused some confusion with people coming to our house, but turned out ok. One person commented that coming towards our neighborhood they could hear a really loud band playing and thought, “that can’t be Rachelle’s party… ” Dallas and I got lunch at the fest with Jen, Chad and Quinn and then went home to pick up the house and get ready for everyone.

A lot of people cram things into these last summer weekends but I was happy that so many people could come over, even if just for a little bit before heading off somewhere else. I think we had a good combination of work friends, family, friends we see a lot, and friends we haven’t seen for quite some time. Thanks to everyone who came by to spend the evening with me and make my birthday happy! For some reason I only took a few photos of the night. I guess it’s a good thing, since that means I was enjoying myself and not really thinking about taking photos. Also thanks to everyone who couldn’t be here but still sent mail, text messages, voicemails & emails! See you guys soon!

More photos from our barbecue on Sunday. It was fun to have all of the family over, both from out of town and the suburbs. We’ve been at this place for about a year and hadn’t had everyone over yet, so mark that off the list.

On a technical note, I somehow had my camera ISO set to 1600 on all of these, when I probably normally would have been on 400. Some of the photos were unusable, some look barely passable, and some I have still posted even though they’re really noisy. Same goes for the wonton photos. I think it’s time to tape a note on my camera that says “CHECK ISO SETTING” to remind myself every time.

Finished!

On Sunday all of Dallas’ family who were in town and who live in the suburbs came to our house for a (mostly) Korean dinner. Dallas’ parents, George & Kathy, & Auntie Laura came first. I was trying to finish up making some cookies when they arrived, but once Kathy & Auntie Laura got into the kitchen I pretty much had to surrender. I was fine with that, though. I knew the food they would be making was going to be fantastic and that they needed to do what they needed to do. Kathy was the ringleader and she gave everyone else jobs to do. In the end, Dallas’ whole immediate family, plus some Aunties and his sister’s friends and Danny all helped in making the meal. It was fun to have everyone involved.

Auntie Laura had taken George and Kathy to both a Korean market and Mitsuwa before coming to our house, so they brought all the ingredients they needed. For dinner we had oriental chicken salad, kalbi ribs, ahi sashimi, wontons, spinach namul, Hawaiian mac salad, and probably even more things that I’m not remembering right now.

I was the most excited about Dallas’ mom’s famous wontons. I’ve had a lot of the other foods we ate that day before, but not the wontons. Whenever Dallas visits his parents he always raves about them, but they don’t exactly travel well, so I’ve never had them. I special requested wontons and Dallas’ mom was nice enough to agree to make them at our house even though we had to make special arrangements to get the proper cooking gear here to do it. George and Danny ended up setting up an electric wok out on our porch so that our kitchen wouldn’t get full of oil. And extra thanks to Danny, who sat out there in the hot sun over a big wok of hot oil all day to cook the wontons. They were delicious.
