Beauty and the Beast – Broadway in Chicago

July 27th, 2011 · 1 Comment

Our annual dinner-and-a-show night this year was way late. My mom’s birthday was last November, but we just got around to it this past weekend. I wanted to wait until after the wedding in February. When I looked at the schedule then, we decided on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, which was only running for a few weeks during the summer. So, summer it is.

My mom and my dad came down to Chicago on Saturday afternoon. We visited a bit and went for a walk before going out for dinner at Gosu, a new Japanese and Korean restaurant in Logan Square. Then my mom and I caught the train downtown and barely made it to the show in time, while Dallas and my dad hung out at home.

When I lived in New York I knew someone who played the french horn in the orchestra for Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. So, that means that this show has been going on for at least something like 10 years 17 years. I was glad to finally get to see it! It was everything I expected. All the songs and the scenes. Gorgeous sets. Such talented actors. I had not seen the cartoon for many, many years. As the show went along, the pieces of the story came back to me. Gaston, Maurice, Lumeire.

On Sunday we all went out for lunch at Lillie’s Q. I thought my dad would really enjoy the southern cooking and barbecue and he did! We tried so many things – boiled peanuts, hush puppies, ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken, collard greens (x 2), baked beans, macaroni and cheese, and corn bread. All SO delicious. I really like this restaurant. Check out my photos from Lillie’s Q here.

As we were leaving the theater my mom said that she was trying to think up all of the shows we’d seen over the years. Well, here’s the list!

2010: El Nandu & Hubbard Street Dance
2009: Rhapsody & Jersey Boys
2008: Landmark & Dead Man’s Cell Phone at the Steppenwolf Theater
2007: Costello’s & Blue Man Group
2005/6: Hillary’s Urban Eatery (HUE) & Wicked
2004: Petterino’s & Mamma Mia
Ze Olde Days (1999?): Riverdance in Milwaukee
Ancient Times (1997?): Lorie Line

New Weber Grill

June 14th, 2011 · 1 Comment

Dallas and I love to grill out for dinner and have people over for barbecues but our old grill has been on the fritz for quite a while. Last year we only grilled one time. We invited a bunch of people over and went to light it up and it was not happening. So, just in time for grilling season this year, we got a new grill. And, lucky for us, Chris works at Weber and was able to get us quite a discount. Last weekend we spent about 4 hungover hours assembling this beast and dismantling our old one. Can’t wait to light it up!

Also, it’s hard to see in this photo, but we got a new stain on our deck. It looks really nice!

Lillie’s Q

May 13th, 2011 · 2 Comments

Dallas and I recently met up with Todd for an early lunch at Lillie’s Q, a barbecue place on North Avenue that we’ve been meaning to try. Dallas and I arrived early, so we ordered boiled peanuts for an appetizer. We are both boiled peanut lovers, as they’re a local specialty in both Hawaii, where Dallas grew up, and in the South, where my dad’s family is from.

For drinks, Dallas ordered a Lillie Palmer, which is basically a boozed up Arnold Palmer. Don’t ask me what kind of booze was in it, the menu said “moonshine” and you could pick the potency! I got my first Bell’s Oberon of the season. Tasty. All drinks, including water, are served in Ball jars.

Lillie’s Q makes five of their own sauces, which are bottled and available on every table. You can pick and choose whichever sauces you want. Here are the choices:

  • Smoky: A unique blend of ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, apple concentrate, liquid smoke, and a few other spices known only to Charlie.
  • Hot Smoky: A unique blend of ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, apple concentrate, liquid smoke, and a few other spices known only to Charlie.
  • Carolina: A unique blend of ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, vinegar, apple concentrate, Worcestershire, and a few other spices known only to Charlie.
  • Carolina Gold: A unique blend of mustard, brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar, apple concentrate, Worcestershire, and a few other spices known only to Charlie.
  • Ivory: A unique blend of mayonnaise, apple cider, vinegar, lime juice, and a few other spices known only to Charlie.

You can also buy the sauces for barbecuing at home. We all definitely liked the Carolina sauces the best. Dallas loved the mustard-based Carolina Gold. My favorite was the Carolina.

For lunch I had the pulled chicken sandwich on brioche, southern style (with coleslaw on top) and the baked beans. Always the baked beans. The chicken was flavorful and so tender. And I loved the beans. Not too smoky, not too sweet.

Dallas got the pulled pork with sweet potato fries as a side.

Dallas and Todd split the tri-tip. Todd didn’t love it and though it should have had a better sear or char on the outside, but Dallas thought it was great.

Todd got the baby back ribs with the stone ground grits with bacon as a side. He gave a rib to Dallas and I to try and I really liked them, but I’m not a huge rib connoisseur. Well, a few days after this lunch I saw that Lillie’s Q was recognized by Food and Wine as one of the top six new barbecue restaurants in United States. And the magazine specifically recommended the baby back ribs. I guess it’s not just me who thinks the ribs were good!

So yeh, we liked Lillie’s Q. When we arrived at 11:30 the place was empty but by the time we left it was full. Not sure how busy they are at night. I think my dad would like this place. Maybe I will take him next time he is in town!

If I back up just a little bit, though, when we got back from breakfast a bunch of people had gone to Shipwreck Beach. Dallas and some others left to join them, but since we’d told people to stop by the house on Sunday, I thought I should stay there. Kristin and I sat around by the pool. I took a nap on a float. After a while, it was clear that no one was stopping by until later. I blame this on hangovers! So, Kristin and I went to Shipwrecks for a while too. I had fun playing in the surf with Brian and Chad and Jill for about an hour.

Such a pretty sunset!

When we came home friends began coming over to hang out. Some just stopped by on their way out of town or on the way to other plans. We had a big barbecue to try to eat up our leftover food and drinks. It was a task we were not up for! We sat out on the lanai and watched whales while eating dinner. There was a beautiful sunset that night and I found a bunch of our friends across the street watching the beautiful show. Also, the Oscars were on (on a time delay) so some people were having fun watching who won. This was our last day on Kauai, so it was nice to hang out with everyone one last time.

At Least It Was a Good Game

September 28th, 2010 · No Comments

Last night we went to Smoke Daddy to watch the Bears vs. Packers game with a bunch of Dallas’s friends. It was only like 50-some degrees outside, but we still sat on the patio with the TV facing outside and the window open so we could hear the audio. There were a few people with us who did not like the Bears, but no other person who was cheering for the Packers.

It was a fun night, despite the cold and the Packers’ loss. We all ordered food and beer and watched the game. A lot of people walking by on the street would stop and watch for a while. Years ago, I lived a few blocks from Smoke Daddy, before we knew Josh, the owner, and we used to go there sometimes. I don’t think I’ve eaten there since that time. Last night I got pulled chicken and beans and tried some of Dallas’s chili and cornbread. Everything was so delicious.

And the game? It was really close at the end but the Packers got so many penalties (18!) and that’s what killed them. The Bears ended up winning with 20 points to the Packers’ 17.
