Yes We Can

November 5th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Logan Bar & Grill is just around the corner from our new place and since we don’t have our TV hooked up yet, we planned on eating dinner there and watching election coverage on all their TVs and then going home and streaming video from the internet. There was no way we could go home. The bar was filled with people so excited to be watching history in the making. I didn’t want to miss anything and there was such an electricity in the air that I wanted to be out somewhere, not just sitting at home surrounded by dust and boxes. Ed came by and watched with us, since we all live in the same neighborhood now. I was so happy when Obama was announced the winner. Head exploding. I’m so proud that Barack and his family are from Chicago and Hawaii. So moved by his acceptance speech. I, along with everyone else, have so much hope for the next presidential term or two. I’m so proud of our country today.

We might not have been in Grant Park, like many we knew were, but I think there was celebration no matter where you were in Chicago. At the bar people were cheering like crazy, cars were driving by blaring their horns. Everyone was so happy. The front door/windows were open because it was such a nice night and people were lined up on the sidewalk watching and listening to Obama’s acceptance speech. These are just photos of TV, but I want to remember where I was and what it felt like when our country made history and finally made a positive decision for its future.

I Voted Early

Quinn is for Obama!

Who knew there were so many people running for president?

Outside the Polling Place, North Center, Chicago

Yesterday I went with Jen, Chad and Quinn to vote early. This week and next are going to be really busy for me, so I just wanted to get it out of the way. Dallas votes absentee to Hawaii, so he missed out on the fun.

We went to the Welles Park field house. The wait was about 45 minutes and we didn’t know if Quinn would make it. Luckily we had a bag of goldfish crackers and a man who worked at the polling place was handing out suckers so we could keep him occupied with that. Quinn managed to keep it together, only starting to really fuss at the end when we were actually voting. I bet everyone liked that!

The voting machines were these really nice touch screens so you just touched who you wanted to vote for and then pressed “Next.” At the end you got to review your selection and then just press a button to cast your vote. So much better than filling in the black line with a pen or doing the punch thing.

Jess and Jen in Chicago

Presidential Debates, Village Tap, Roscoe Village, Chicago

Jessica and her sister Jen flew in yesterday. They’re attending a wedding today and staying at our place for the weekend. On Friday they met me downtown after work and we went to Millennium Park. A bunch of it was closed off for NextFest and Chicago Gourmet, but we were still able to admire the bean and the fountains. We walked up Michigan Avenue, bought some chocolates at Vosges, and went up the Signature Lounge for a drink (like we did last time Jess was here), to rest, and to admire the view. Jess has been to Chicago a few times before, but this was Jen’s first time. We ended the night at Village Tap. We were sort of bummed because we missed the first part of the debate, but when we got to the Tap it the patrons were completely silent and the TVs were all tuned to the debate with the volume cranked. So we ended up getting to watch some of it. Well, I should say, the patrons were completely silent when Barack spoke, but totally heckled McCain and drank when he said certain things.
