Night Out in Logan Square

June 2nd, 2011 · No Comments

Friday of Memorial Day Weekend.

Groupon for Real Tenochtitlan. Jess, Jen, Chad, Quinn and I. Quinn got arroz y frijoles and said his OJ tasted funny. Minutes later he passed out. I swear he didn’t have any pours from the pitcher of margaritas.

Jess and I split to go to Cole’s. Nathan’s band, The Pear Traps was on at 10:00 p.m. midnight.

Late night, Alice’s Lounge. This is really in Avondale, but I don’t want to change the post title. Polish dive bar. Crazy laser lights. Karaoke. The bar doesn’t close until 4 a.m. We did not stay quite that long.

Okocim.

Rewster’s Cafe

Breakfast croissant sandwich

Grilled cheese: PavĂ© d’Affinois cheese, honey butter, toasted brioche

Cappuccino

In January a new restaurant called Rewster’s Cafe on the border of Logan Square and Avondale opened up. After we got back from our trip to Hawaii in March, Jess and I went to check it out. We really liked it.

Chef Frederic Zahm is the French chef/owner and was working behind the counter. Couldn’t be nicer. Some think the $10-11 sandwiches are overpriced, but all of them are made with top-notch ingredients and all come with a side (we got salads). And both were super delicious. We got the croissant breakfast sandwich and grilled cheese and split them.

I also had a cappuccino, which I chugged. I remember being really tired and possibly hung over that day, but I don’t remember why. Anyway, the cappuccino was not enough so I also had some of the locally roasted (in Humboldt Park) Dark Matter coffee. Everything was great. The sandwiches were delicious. I loved the grilled cheese, but it was very rich. Splitting our sandwiches was perfect. I’ll be back!

MoJoe’s Sucks Now

MoJoe’s Street Writing, Avondale, Chicago

MoJoe’s, an independent coffee shop in Roscoe Village, closed probably a year ago when I still lived in the neighborhood. As far as I knew they still had a shop open on Belmont. A couple months ago I took the California bus to Belmont and while I was waiting for the Belmont bus to arrive I saw this street writing. I guess people weren’t liking the store on Belmont either. The internet is being very vague about whether or not the Belmont location is still open.

Urban Belly

Urban Belly, Avondale, Chicago (Chef Bill Kim in the center of the photo. Also, his wife Yvonne was our server.)

Jess emailled me a a week or so ago about a new restaurant that was opening called Urban Belly. At it’s most basic, it’s a noodle shop, but the menu seemed to indicate really high-end ingredients and authentic Asian soups. People were saying that this was Chicago’s answer to New Yorks wildly popular fancy noodle shop, Momofuku. I remember talking to Jeannette about Momofuku and had always wanted to when I was in New York but never did so I was definitely interested in trying Urban Belly.

This week Jess said she wanted to take me out for dinner for my birthday so we decided to give Urban Belly a try. We knew about where it was – in the middle of nowhere near California and Belmont – but were surprised when we walked up and it was in a tiny strip mall. There is a laundry mat on one side and a dry cleaner on the other! Chef Bill Kim is the guy behind the restaurant and I’d read on the Urban Belly website that his wife Yvonne is a photographer. The website is gorgeous and I guess we were just surprised that it would be located in that little generic strip mall. We also were not expecting counter service when we went in. As well the seating is just 4 big tables with communal seating.

Aside from these surprises, we really liked the interior look of the restaurant. .. and what really matters.. we loved the food. The dumplings were super tasty and the soups were so savory and delicious. I could just imagine going to Urban Belly on a cold winter day and losing myself in a piping hot, tasty bowl of udon.

Also, if you go, and you should, the restaurant is BYO. Jess and I brought a really tasty bottle of Chardonnay.
