Thread Away

April 13th, 2010 · No Comments

A few weeks ago my eyebrows were dangerously approaching unibrow status and something needed to be done. My coworker Anjum gets her eyebrows threaded and we were talking about it. Also, I remember my cousin Kelly saying she’s done it before. I never had, but found a place nearby work called Thread Away that had good ratings online, so I decided to give it a try.

I went to Thread Away 11 or so to avoid a lunch rush and there was no one there. There were two Indian woman working on the salon and the older one was going to perform my service. She was really nice and patient with me when I told her it was my first time. She did a really good job, but I’m not going to lie, it did hurt a lot. The look, though, is very clean and polished. It’s been weeks and my eyebrows have kept their shape. Anjum tells me it’s less painful the more you get threading done. Also, my skin has always been sensitive to wax and although threading is supposed to be better for your skin, my face was still quite pink/red after the procedure. So, note for next time, maybe go after work, not at lunch!

If you don’t know what eyebrow threading is, I’ve embedded a video below that shows how it’s done.

Amish Friendship Bread – Cinnamon Raisin Walnut Muffins

March 17th, 2010 · 5 Comments

Amish Friendship Bread is bread made from sourdough starter that is shared in the same fashion as a chain letter. Someone, who knows when, starts the dough and it gets fed and reproduces like crazy. At the end you use a bit of your dough to make bread or muffins and then pass on bags of starter to your friends.

My coworker Aimee passed some starter on to me a few weeks ago. I took care of it, fed it, bathed it, in sickness and in health. About ten days later I added a few more ingredients and made it into cinnamon raisin walnut muffins. Dallas and I ate a bunch of them over a weekend. The rest I brought to work on Monday, where they were a big hit!

I passed extra starter dough onto Anjum and Jess. Hope their bread/muffins turned out as good as mine!

Good Luck, Erika!

March 16th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Last Friday we took Erika out to English for her last day at Roundarch. It was a fun time talking to all my coworkers… about not work stuff.. Everyone was drinking these schmancy beers by St. Peter’s Brewery. They were delicious. I’m going to have to look for them at the liquor store next time. And they come in these old, 1800s, style bottles.

And this happened:

And that’s all I remember. Just kidding. T-Money DID buy a LOT of drinks, though.

The night actually went way, way, way later than I’d anticipated. Somehow I found myself at Arabia Hookah Lounge in Noble Square until 2 in the morning! I never smoked hookah before, so I thought I’d give it a try. I shared the mango flavor with Josh and Anjum and Marlena shared apple. I’m glad I tried it once, but my throat was so sore the day after. I’ll probably never do it again. Ugh! Fun night, though.

Keefer’s Kaffe

Keefer’s is located at 20 W. Kinzie St. I worked in that building for a year and I never noticed that there’s also a seperate restaurant, Keefer’s Kaffe, in that building. It’s more casual and lunch-y, than Keefer’s. A few weeks ago Aimee, Anjum and I went and got lunch at Keefer’s Kaffe. Good lunch option. Better than lunch at Keefer’s, which can be kind of formal and pricey. I had this chopped Greek salad (romaine, cucumber, grape tomatoes, pepperoncini, picked red onion, bell pepper, olives, feta, oregano vinaigrette) and it was awesome.

Anjum and I planned to take Aimee out for her birthday and Aimee insisted we also include my engagement, so there was a lot of celebrating to do last night! We walked over to Bin 36 and each got a flight of wine. Mine was the Sauvignon Blanc vs. Chardonnay flight.* We also shared the Triple XXX flight of cheese that included an American mozzarella, Brie, a goat cheese, Camembert, and one on the end I can’t remember. On the side we had apricots and figs and some truffled honey. Delicious, delicious, delicious. We need to do this more often!

Aimee and Anjum surprised me with a gift, which was a gift bag with a bunch of wedding magazines in it. It was fun to look through them, although I’m so not in a wedding mode yet. Someone needs to knock me on the head and remind me that when you get engaged then you have to plan a wedding. I think Dallas and I were just so excited to get engaged that when people immediately ask us when or where the wedding is, we have no answer just yet. But it was fun to page through and look at the different stuff. A lot of it is way more than anything we want, I think. One of the magazines was a destination wedding magazine and that was fun too.

After our cheese and wine extravaganza, we decided we should probably eat some real food. Downstairs at A Mano they were having their $5 pizza night so we ordered a few pizzas and had a bit more wine. Great night! I need to go out with the girls from work more often!

*Note to self: Favorite wine of the night was the 2008 Domaine Des Fontanelles Sauvignon Blanc.
