Dakoda and Bailey… and Introducing Benji!

September 13th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Dakoda came to live with my parents a few years ago as a puppy after our family dog Max died at a very old age. As you can see he’s grown very large compared to his puppy photos.

Bailey is kind of a delinquent kid of my brother’s family. He was acting up at home and they tried everything and he wouldn’t behave so they sent him to live with grandpa and grandma. He’s actually doing well at my parent’s house, as far as I can tell. Shorty used to be his bud at my brother’s house. (Shorty used to be my cat – and don’t forget the ShellB saga!.) At my parent’s house Callie was his friend, but she passed on. Now Bailey is the last cat living there, although I’m sure he sees plenty around the woods and neighborhood. Our family’s cat history is kind of like a Springer episode, I guess!

A few days before I went to visit my parents they adopted another dog. A little Lhasa Apso. My niece, Stephanie, had been asked to name Dakoda so this time around they let my other niece, Jessica, name the new dog. Somehow they settled on Benji. I heard she was trying to name it Matt, after one of my cousins, and also that Fluffy Wuffy was in the running as a name. I was a little surprised that my parents were interested in a small dog because we have always had medium to large-sized dogs (springer spaniel, retriever, great dane.. although there was that one random beagle for a while… ), but Benji is a nice dog and a lot easier to handle than Dakoda, that’s for sure. I think Benji is going to be my mom’s dog, where Dakoda will hang with my dad more.

Dakoda outweighs Benji by about 88 pounds. I’m not sure if he thinks that my parents got him a new play toy when they got Benji or if he knows Benji is a dog, but he tried to play with him constantly. And sometimes it’s ok and sometimes it’s way too rough and you have to break them up. Before you go feeling sorry for Benji know these things:

1. Benji teases Dakoda and comes back for more every time.
2. Look at his face when Dakoda looks like he’s going to bite him. He seems to be saying, “Yeh? So?”
3. Dakoda is kind of big and dopey and runs around and wrestles where Benji’s nips are a lot more precise.
4. What Dakoda does to Benji, Benji tries on the cat. Well, more like he’s just interested in the cat. Dakoda learned as a puppy not to mess with Bailey or Callie and Benji has yet to learn that lesson. But I think he will soon. It just takes one good swipe.

Roscoe Village, Chicago

On Roscoe Street between Kitsch’n and Orange there is a small business with a sign in the window that says “Dogs Understand the Importance of Naps.” Many times when I pass there is a dog sleeping in the window. I’ve taken a few photos of this scene, but they always turn out horrible with reflections and stuff. This photo is no better, but I’m posting it anyway.

I walked to the Addison Brown line and took the train downtown for lunch. It was Giuliana’s last day at Google and, as is tradition, all the old FeedBurners were taking her out to Singha. We did the same thing on my last day and I remember at that time trying to order Phuket beer. I believe that the correct pronunciation is “poo-ket” but of course, our sixth-grader minds thought “fuck-it” and thought it was appropriate for a last day celebration. Unfortunately, the beer wasn’t available for my last day, but it was for Giuliana’s, so a bunch of us ordered it.

After lunch a few people had tickets to see The Dark Knight on IMAX as part of some Google-sponsored event. Someone couldn’t go and there was an extra ticket. No one knew what to do with it. Since I didn’t have anything planned that afternoon, I volunteered to use the ticket. Thanks Google for lunch and a movie! I’d already seen The Dark Knight, but it was amazing on IMAX.

After lunch I ran a few errands. Dallas called to say that unexpectedly his college friend Chandra was in town visiting from San Francisco and he was going to meet up with her and Kristin. I’d met Chandra once in 2004 when I lived in Chicago and she lived in
New York. It was either this trip or this one, they were only a week apart. Kristin and I were both working for Monster back then and we were both visiting New York for the same project. We took Chandra out with us for Blue Ribbon Sushi, some of the best sushi in New York. Anyway, after I got home and changed I met up with Kristin, Dallas and Chandra at Kristin’s house. We had a glass of wine in her back yard before heading out for dinner.. which was sushi. This time at Tank. The photo at the right is not a good quality, but shows how much sushi the four of us pounded through. It was almost as much sushi as Dallas, Kristin and I ate that one time at Blue Fin after the Old Town Art Fair. So good.

After dinner we went to The Long Room and sat outside in the garden, which is fabulous. The beer list at The Long Room is pretty impressive too. Not as great as when we were at Hopleaf, but really good. Danny, Killian and Alden met up with us at The Long Room. Jessica also came and brought her college friend Lizzie who was visiting from the Twin Cities. Randomly there were two of their college classmates at The Long Room. They didn’t even go to school in Illinois, so kind of weird.

When The Long Room closed at 2 a.m. Alden, Jessica, Lizzie and I decided it was a good idea to go out for karaoke. Alden’s friend Kristen works at a karaoke place called Sidekick out in Irving Park, so we decided to go there. When we arrived we found out that they stop doing karaoke at 2 a.m. Dang! We bought a few shots (mine was buttery nipple) and asked around to see where we could go for karaoke. On a recommendation, we went to Hidden Cove.

Hidden Cove, Lincoln Square, Chicago

I was excited to go to Hidden Cove because of a dumb inside joke we had at Google about a conference room we called “The Cove.” It was everything we wanted. Nice staff, french fries, open til 4 a.m., karaoke. Jess, Lizzie and I sang 9 to 5 and Alden sang R.O.C.K. in the USA.

08.08.08 was a fun day for me. Totally unplanned, aside from lunch, I just went with the flow and had a great time!

Butterfly Haven at the Nature Museum

August 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

On Friday Amanda, Stephanie, Jessica and my dad came down to Chicago and we did “take two” of going to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Last time we tried to go it was a holiday and we just drove around forever looking for parking before driving home. I could kick myself because I found out that the Belmont bus, which is just blocks from my house, takes to you right to the front entrance of the museum. That’s how we finally, successfully got there.

The highlight of the trip to the museum was the butterfly haven. Jessica loves butterflies, so she loved this part of the museum. Right after we got in the butterfly haven there was a presentation for kids where they released some newly hatched(?) butterflies. I think Jess liked that too. I had only been to a butterfly house once before, 3 years ago at the Bronx Zoo. It was fun to go again. At the nature museum it seemed like there were more butterflies. Literally just flying everywhere and even landing on you.

Dogsitting for Vegas

July 21st, 2008 · 5 Comments

Vegas, Wrigleyville, Chicago

This past weekend Jill and Brian headed to Napa for a wedding and I took care of their yellow lab, Vegas. He’s a really great dog – well-behaved. He listens and sits before doing most things. For example, when you give him his food he will just sit there in the kitchen until you say “ok” then he will go and eat. He walks really nicely too.

Vegas, Wrigleyville, Chicago

The only thing is that Vegas thinks he’s a little puppy except he weighs .. I don’t know.. like 100 – 150 pounds? He came barreling down the stairs into the downstairs living room and knocked me right into a chair once. Another time I was playing too rough with him, I didn’t know it at the time, and he jumped up and realizing how big he was, I jumped back and his paws caught my leg and bruised it up, but that was totally my fault. I shouldn’t have gotten him so worked up.

Vegas sitting on his butt on the step, Wrigleyville, Chicago

Jill and Brian weren’t 100% sure if I should kennel him when I wasn’t at the house, but I left him out a lot and he didn’t get into anything or make any accidents. Funny thing – one time when I went to their house I couldn’t find Vegas anywhere. Then I saw him sleeping inside his kennel. I think it’s neat the the kennel is his little safety blanket and not a place of punishment. Another thing I found amusing is how he loves to sit on the bottom stair of the stairs that go up. Like with his butt right on the bottom stair. He does it all the time!

Anyway, Vegas is a fun dog. Plus, Jill and Brian let me borrow their car when they were away so I got a lot of errands done.

Matt & Molly got married in Molly’s mom’s backyard and that’s where they rehearsed the wedding ceremony the night before the event was to take place. The yard is so green and plush and beautiful. Too bad that the sun was so severe and some of the photos are kind of strange. Luckily the next day was a big more cloudy, even if it was just as hot. Everyone’s dressed up for the rehearsal because immediately afterwards we went out for rehearsal dinner at the country club which required a jacket and tie for the guys and dresses for the ladies.
