My brother had a barbecue at his house on Saturday. I took the Amtrak up to attend. Amanda and maybe Richard (?) have done a lot of work on their yard these past few years and it’s looking great. They got some new patio furniture and we all sat outside while the kids played on their swing set and slide. The weather was great for a few hours. Then it rained and we ran around picking everything up and stayed inside for a while. And then it was beautiful out again and we played bocce ball for hours.

I was glad Kelly and Jeff made it down for the party because I’d never met Charlotte before. She’s about 2 months old now. We figured that was about how old Tessa was when I first met her out in Washington DC. Now, of course, she’s running around with the older kids and talking like crazy. All of the kids were having a great time chasing each other around and playing.

Saturday night mom and dad drove me back to Chicago and stayed overnight here. We went to brunch at Sola and ran a few errands on Sunday and then they start their drive home. It’s kind of windy and cloudy here now. Hopefully they didn’t catch any rain on the way.

How authentic do you think this is?

steph_corn.jpg
My mom said the corn wasn’t as good as when my brother made it. No worries. The kids got tons of other treats!

Looks fun.

Steph was excited because that night my brother was taking her to her first concert ever: Kenny Chesney. She’s a fan!

Get it? The utility belt meets the kilt = utilikilt.

Who are these bozos? :)

Bright and early on Tuesday I sat down at the computer and thought of all the things I could get done on this site and Chicagoist and FeedBurner projects and a site that I work on for Nancy and then how I could get all my bills paid online and even look into investing more in my retirement accounts.. and then I sat on hold endlessly with Fidelity and Charles Schwab, spent forever trying to rebuild my MT templates (something is totally wrong with my setup and/or my host), was burnt on Chicagoist, checked on some FeedBurner support, and blew off my other work. I started thinking how I really didn’t want to be sitting there, how Dallas had been off in Boston for the last 5 days spending time with our friends and going from party to party, and how the minutes of my vacation were ticking away. .. So on a whim I took the Amtrak up to Wisconsin and went to Summerfest with my brother, my nieces and my mom. .. a way better way to spend the day. And I was back in time to still get a few things done that night.

Saturday we went to Wisconsin to celebrate Jessica’s 3rd birthday. When I go to WI myself I sometimes take Amtrak. It’s $20 each way, which is pretty affordable. But when Dallas and I are both going it adds up to $80 and no longer makes sense. So, this time we rented a car for $35.

Jess is growing up a lot but she is still really shy when there are a lot of people and she’s the center of attention. Amanda said they asked her what she wanted to have on her birthday dinner and instead of pizza or the other usual things you’d expect, Jess said she wanted to have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Luckily that got overruled and we had sloppy joes with grilled corn and that cheesy potato casserole.. the one with the sour cream and butter that every person in WI knows how to make. Jess did get to pick out the theme of her party: Princesses, the chips: Cheetos, and the candy: sour something gummies (don’t know the proper name). I think cheetos is what she actually had for dinner. It seemed like she barely touched any of the rest of her food. Oh well, it’s HER birthday!

On the way home, Dallas and I were trying to think of all the things we could do with the car for the night and the next morning. We ended up going to Dominick’s and getting the big toilet paper and the box of chicken breasts and two loaves of bread and all sorts of crazy things we wouldn’t want to carry home from the local Jewel.

Union Station

Union Station, West Loop, Chicago

I took these photos a few months ago when I went to Union Station to catch an Amtrak train to Wisconsin. From A View on Cities:

The Chicago Union Station is one of the last of the grand American railway stations. The station replaced the overcrowded Grand Passenger Station built in 1881 for a consortium of four railroads.

This consortium, headed by the Pennsylvania railroad wanted to Chicago Union Station create a new, large railway station befitting the city’s status as America’s railway hub. They wanted the station to make an architectural impact, similar to New York’s Grand Central Terminal and Washington’s Union Station.

Daniel Burnham, Chicago’s famous architect who was responsible for the magnificent Beaux-Arts Union Station in Washington, started drawing plans for the new railway station, but he died before the design was completed. His work was taken over by Graham, Anderson and Probst, later joined by White. They designed a complex incorporating two different buildings on either side of Canal street, connected to each other by a tunnel. Construction of the building started in 1913 and was finished 12 years later, in 1925.

The west side building contains the large waiting room, known as the ‘Great Hall’. The waiting room has a 112ft/34m high vaulted skylight, marble floors with long benches and marble walls with large Corinthian columns. According the the original plans, the building would also have 20 floors of office space, but only 8 were completed.

On the east side of Canal street was the concourse building. The glass vaulted concourse was modeled on the concourse of the now demolished Pennsylvania Station in New York. The concourse in the Chicago Union Station was demolished in 1969 and replaced by office buildings.

Although the station could handle as many as 400,000 passengers per day, about 100,000 passengers made use of the station during its heyday in the 1940s. The station has two sets of tracks, 10 leading northbound and ten southbound. It is estimated to be capable of handling more than 700 trains in a single day.

After the foundation of Amtrak, most of the train services were directed to the Union Station. After Dearborn Station was closed in 1971 and Central Station in 1972, the Union Station remained as the only passenger railway station in downtown Chicago. In 1992 the Union Station was renovated by the Lucien Lagrange Associates and in 2002, the building was (finally) designated a Chicago Landmark.

Also, Wikipedia has some great information.

Between Chicago & Milwaukee

Riding on Amtrak reminds me of flying on a plane. The tickets are the same, the seats recline, there’s a tray table.. except you can get there like 2 minutes before the train leaves and not an hour or two. One thing I really liked about the Amtrak, though, is that each seat has an outlet. I charged my camera batteries and my phone on my trip to Milwaukee.

The bottom photos are typical views on the ride from Chicago to Milwaukee.
