Here are a few of my favorite photos from Chicagoist’s Ctrl-Alt-Rock event on Thursday night. I think it was even more of a success than last year. We had 4 bands play and I negotiated a deal with Goose Island to get a few kegs of 312 Urban Wheat donated. Double Door agreed to sell the 312 for $3/cup and I put up a $300 tab so all of the 312 beer was either free or only $3. The bands were really great and probably about 300 – 400 (??) people came out even though it was only about 3 degrees outside. It was a fun time!

More recap here and more photos here and here.

After dinner at Zapatista, Chuck lead us over to Hot House. He works there so he was able to get us all the hookups. Thanks, dude! I’d never been to Hot House so I was excited to go and check it out. Really cool. Great atmosphere and great music. Bobby Matos & The NY Latin Jazz Allstars were playing. Awesome.

At some point, Tankboy suggested we go to Pontiac. I didn’t really want to go to another bar, but I realized the going to Pontiac would get me closer to getting home easier. So we grabbed a couple cabs and headed up. I didn’t realize at the time, but it was live band karaoke night.

Alicia was the first to sign up and since Tankboy is a regular there and DJs there, he got her pushed up to the top of the list. She told me she’d be singing Bohemian Rhapsody and I was like “oh lord!” because I could just imagine the 1,000,000 ways to screw that song up. It seemed pretty easy to do, but you know what? Alicia worked that song. She was all over the stage, running around, in the crowd having them sing. She was killer. Justin sang a Talking Heads song that I wasn’t too familiar with, but he did a great song too. Justin is kind of a soft-spoken guy, most the time he’s got a button down shirt and dress pants on, with his hair nice and neat and his side part never out of place.. but I forget that he’s also a performer. He’s got a powerful voice and a great stage presence. When Tankboy said he’d be singing a song, too, I didn’t know what to expect. I mean, it’s Tankboy! He doesn’t sing, he DJs! Holy crap! He sang this psycho lyric version of Sweet Caroline that left everyone with their jaws hanging open. It was great. So much fun!

We took the Chicagoist staff out on Friday night to Zapatista for a big, year-end, pat-on-the-back celebration. It’s great how everyone gets along so well. We all had an awesome time. The food at Zapatista was excellent (Chuck did a review here) and there was no shortage of sangria. Big thanks to Chuck for taking the lead and setting everything up. It made it easy so that all I had to do was show up with my credit card and have a good time.

On Thursday night most of the Chicagoist staff met up at Piece for pizza and beers. Except I somehow managed to stick to salad and diet soda (whoo hoo for my diet!). It’s always fun to get everyone together and remind each other that we’re real people behind all the emails and forum posts and site posts. We also got to meet 6 of the 8 newest contributors, which was really cool.

I was really nervous this week before the Chicagoist party. For a while a few major things started to feel like they were falling apart, but in the end it all turned out great and went off without a hitch Thursday night. No matter how many sleepless nights the planning causes, these events we’ve been having have turned out great. Lots of fun. I love giving back to the readers this way and every time I see all of our staff coming together to make the event happen and then there to enjoy it, I get a little sappy. We really have come a lonnnng way since early 2004 when I’d just moved here and Jake was asking me “Hey, would you be interested in starting a site like Gothamist but for Chicago?” I can remember he wanted to start right away and I asked to wait til I came back from Hawaii, which that trip was another life-changing event that took things in a direction I never anticipated. So much has happened, so much good, over the last 2 years, but things I never imagined when I was sitting in a UHaul driving across the country with Jess. Thanks to everyone who has been there for me these past few. I know I don’t say it as much as I should!
