Susan :: Lihue, Kaua’i

Getting ready to fly from Lihue, Kaua’i to Honolulu, Oahu. Everyone’s excited to go and experience Honolulu, but a little sad to be leaving Kaua’i at the same time.

Usually when we fly in at the beginning of our trip Dallas buys me a lei, but this time we were too distracted finding the go! airlines gates and then when we got there, there was nothing there. I didn’t realize Dallas was doing it, but to make up for not getting a lei when we first came, he bought me a lei in Lihue before going to Honolulu. And he made sure to get one with pikake, a flower I looove the smell of.

go!, Honolulu Airport

When we got to Honolulu our traveling wasn’t quite over yet. We needed to take a quick trip over to Lihue, Kauai. Except that our inter-island flight on go! got canceled so we had to wait 4 hours for the next one. Instead of calling up a friend or relative in Honolulu to come get us and get out of the airport, we just killed some time drinking in the airport bar. We had all of our luggage with us and John and Susan were arriving shortly, so it seemed easier to just wait it out than anything else. What a long wait, though. By that time we were in the air for something like 9 hours and just wanted to be at our final destination.

Until recently, Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines were the only two airlines that provided interisland flights. They were pretty much the same, if you ask me, and each charged about $100 each way for flights between the islands. Then along came Mesa Airlines with go! and everything was all shook up. go! decided to do round-trip flights between the islands for half the price of Hawaiian and Aloha – only $100. So, of course Hawaiian and Aloha airlines had to lower their prices and it was a huge controversy and everything. We flew go! for the first time and it was pretty standard. The only sort of strange thing was that you have to purchase any drinks you wanted.. no free POG like Hawaiian and Aloha offer. I always thought it was weird to have drink service on a 20-minute flight anyway. If they want to skip the drinks and offer half-price fares, that is fine with me.

One funny thing is that for the instructions and safety information, go! uses a recording of a guy, maybe two guys, saying it all in a local dialect with some pidgin thrown in. It’s kind of funny. Probably the only time I’ve listened to that stuff in years. They even start out with a good “Aloooooha!” and end with “Ahhhhhhright”. Funny. The only bad thing was that go! is located way out in the commuter terminal, which Dallas said is the really old inter-island terminal. Nothing really wrong with it, but it’s just a hike to walk or take a shuttle to.

Yeep. I made a pact with myself that while on vacation I wouldn’t check email at all. I didn’t know if there’d be an internet connection on Kauai and when there was, I pretended there wasn’t. I really just needed to get away. But then I get home and have 597 emails. And I don’t think many of them are spam because they’re all through gmail, which is really great at filtering it out. I guess that’s what I get for not keeping up as I went along.

Ugh. It feels weird to be back home. We took red-eye flights last night. I had a layover in San Diego for a while and just got in this afternoon. Last night I was seriously considering canceling my flight and leaving everything behind and just staying in Honolulu. Sounded like a great plan! At least it’s semi-warm here, even if there is still snow on the ground.

The first year I was in Hawaii, it was with a group of all friends. The next time it was all Dallas’ family. This time was a mix. We were with many friends but also Dallas’ sister Caroline and brother Jordan. Like the last time, we did spend a lot of time with family and local friends, too. It was a great time and a great mix of things to do with all different people. Of course I have a ton of photos to get through and lots of stories. It will probably take me some time…

These photos are from our flight out from Chicago to LA. Then when we got to the Honolulu airport we were hungry so we got some saimin and curry in the main terminal.

A Lebanese Lunch

On Saturday, we drove the car to the airport and parked and then took the Metro the rest of the way into Washington. That way when we came back so I could catch my flight, the car and my luggage and everything would already be at the airport.

We went out to the Woodley Park/Adams-Morgan station, where there was the tallest, steepest escalator I’ve every seen, I think. The neighborhoods there are pretty cool. Historic. Pretty. We had lunch right across the street from the Metro station at The Lebanese Taverna. We weren’t sure what to expect, but when we walked in to look at a menu, it smelled so good, we knew we had to stay.

The food at The Lebanese Taverna (menu) had a lot of things you’d find at a Greek or Middle Eastern or Turkish restaurant – falafel, hummus, kebabs – but then had other things that I’d never seen before that were uniquely Lebanese. The bread that was served with a sesame oil (or the hummus we ordered) was oblong and fluffy. And delicious. It reminded me of the poori you get at some Indian restaurants.

For an entree I got Fatteh bel Djaje, which is seasoned chunks of chicken breast layered over chick peas on toasted Lebanese bread, smothered with a warm yogurt sauce, pine nuts and garlic. It was great. I loved the mixture of textures – really tender chicken, with the yogurt sauce and the crunchy bread. Yum.

How crazy is it that on November 25 it was warm enough to sit outside with a light jacket on and eat lunch?
